Jung Eun Lee,Soo-Muk Cho,Eunkyo Park,Seung Min Lee,Yuri Kim,Joong Hyuck Auh,Hyung-Kyoon Choi,Sohee Lim,Sung Chul Lee,Jung-Hyun Kim 한국영양학회 2014 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.8 No.5
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Rubus Coreanus Miquel (RCM), used as a traditional Korean medicine, reduces chronic inflammatory diseases such as cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. However, its mechanism has not been elucidated. In this study, we examine the anti-inflammatory effects of RCM and their possible mechanisms using RAW 264.7 cells. MATERIALS/METHODS: Unripe RCM ethanol extract (UE), unripe RCM water extract (UH), ripe RCM ethanol extract (RE), and ripe RCM water extract (RH) were prepared. Inflammatory response was induced with LPS treatment, and expression of pro-inflammatory mediators (iNOS, COX-2, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) and NO and PGE2 productions were assessed. To determine the anti-inflammatory mechanism of RCM, we measured NF-κB and MAPK activities. RESULTS: UE and UH treatment significantly reduced NF-κB activation and JNK and p38 phosphorylation and reduced transcriptional activities decreased iNOS, COX-2, and pro-inflammatory cytokines expressions, and NO and PGE2 productions. RE and RH treatments reduced IL-1β and IL-6 expressions through suppressions of JNK and p38 phosphorylation. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we showed that RCM had anti-inflammatory effects by suppression of pro-inflammatory mediator expressions. Especially, unripe RCM showed strong anti-inflammatory effects through suppression of NF-κB and MAPK activation. These findings suggest that unripe RCM might be used as a potential functional material to reduce chronic inflammatory responses.

Background and Purpose We performed a population-based study to determine the prevalence and incidence of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) in South Korea using data from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) database. Methods Data recorded in the HIRA database between January 2016 and December 2020 were analyzed. The inclusion criteria in this study for patients with CIDP were a diagnostic code of G61.8 in the seventh and eighth revision of the Korean Standard Classification of Disease and a >3-month history of oral immunosuppressant use. The age-adjusted incidence rate and prevalence of CIDP in South Korea were also analyzed. Results CIDP was newly diagnosed in 953 patients during the study period. The mean age at diagnosis was 58.36 years, and the male-to-female ratio was 1.74. The age-adjusted incidence rates were 0.22, 0.21, 0.23, 0.30, and 0.25 per 100,000 person-years in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020, respectively. The age-adjusted prevalence was estimated at 1.16 per 100,000 persons in 2020. Age and the Elixhauser Comorbidity Index were associated with the in-hospital mortality of patients with CIDP. Infection and cardiovascular disease (CVD) were also significantly associated with the in-hospital mortality of those patients. Acute-onset CIDP was initially diagnosed in an estimated 101 out of 953 patients with CIDP. Conclusions The prevalence and incidence rates of CIDP in South Korea were comparable between this nationwide cohort study and previous studies. Common comorbidities such as CVD and diabetes should be appropriately monitored in patients with CIDP to prevent a poor prognosis and socioeconomic burden.

Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods have been widely investigated for use in piezoelectric generators, photovoltaic devices, nanotemplates, photoelectrochemical applications, etc. In addition to verticalalignment, intentional arrangement of ZnO nanorods according to a careful design can enhance thedevice performance. In this work, we used metal nanotransfer printing to fabricate arrangement-controlled and vertically grown ZnO nanorods on both hard andflexible substrates. Highly verticalgrowth and periodical arrangement of the ZnO nanorods were confirmed by microscope images. Theircrystallinity and photoluminescence characteristics were also investigated. Transmission spectra of thesubstrates show the enhancement of optical transmission after the nanorod growth. We believe that thisfabrication technique lends itself to simple fabrication of arrangement-controlled and vertically grownone-dimensional nanostructures on both hard andflexible substrates for application in solar cells, watersplitting, metamaterials, etc.

<P>Regioselective chemical reactions and structural transformations of two-dimensional (2D) layered transition-metal chalcogenide (TMC) nanocrystals are described. Upon exposure of 2D TiS2 nanodiscs to a chemical stimulus, such as Cu ion, selective chemical reaction begins to occur at the peripheral edges. This edge reaction is followed by ion diffusion, which is facilitated by interlayer nanochannels and leads to the formation of a heteroepitaxial TiS2–Cu2S intermediate. These processes eventually result in the generation of a single-crystalline, double-convex toroidal Cu2S nanostructure. Such 2D regioselective chemical reactions also take place when other ionic reactants are used. The observations made and chemical principles uncovered in this effort indicate that a general approach exists for building various toroidal nanocrystals of substances such as Ag2S, MnS, and CdS.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2011/jacsat.2011.133.issue-37/ja2049594/production/images/medium/ja-2011-049594_0007.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja2049594'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

<P>Cinchonine (C19H22N2O) is a natural compound of Cinchona bark. Although cinchonine's antiplatelet effect has been reported in the previous study, antiobesity effect of cinchonine has never been studied. The main objective of this study was to investigate whether cinchonine reduces high-fat-diet- (HFD-) induced adipogenesis and inflammation in the epididymal fat tissues of mice and to explore the underlying mechanisms involved in these reductions. HFD-fed mice treated with 0.05% dietary cinchonine for 10 weeks had reduced body weight gain (−38%), visceral fat-pad weights (−26%), and plasma levels of triglyceride, free fatty acids, total cholesterol, and glucose compared with mice fed with the HFD. Moreover, cinchonine significantly reversed HFD-induced downregulations of WNT10b and galanin-mediated signaling molecules and key adipogenic genes in the epididymal adipose tissues of mice. Cinchonine also attenuated the HFD-induced upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines by inhibiting toll-like-receptor-2- (TLR2-) and TLR4-mediated signaling cascades in the adipose tissue of mice. Our findings suggest that dietary cinchonine with its effects on adipogenesis and inflammation may have a potential benefit in preventing obesity.</P>
The Role of the Executive Pay Cap: Evidence from Korea
( Sohee Park ),( Natalie Kyung Won Kim ),( Jae Yong Shin ),( Sun-moon Jung ) 한국회계학회 2021 會計學硏究 Vol.46 No.2
Korean firms are required to obtain shareholder approval on their executive pay cap―the maximum possible amount of total compensation for all executives. This paper investigates the efficacy of the executive pay cap requirement by analyzing the determinants and implications of the executive pay cap of Korean firms. We document that the executive pay cap is not a boilerplate figure and is associated with corporate governance and economic factors. We find that the executive pay cap is adjusted according to changes in firm performance and that a significant portion of sample firms revise their executive pay cap downwards. However, we only observe this phenomenon when foreign ownership is high, largest shareholders’ ownership is high, a controlling shareholder is a board member, and the firm is a non-chaebol firm. Thus, we find that the external and internal monitoring mechanisms affect whether the executive pay cap is better aligned with firm performance. Our results also suggest that the executive pay cap is used as an anchor for determining executive compensation. We do not find support for the alternative possibility that firms could signal future firm performance through the executive pay cap.

Solenopsis invicta, known as the red imported fire ant, is an insect native to South America. This species was unintentionally introduced into Australia, New Zealand, several Asian countries, Caribbean countries, and the United States. It shows a high survival rate and settlement potential in human-habitable and non-living areas such as tropical rainforests, disturbed areas, deserts, grasslands, and roads. In Korea, invasions of red fire ants have been reported every year since 2017, and two invasions were discovered in 2023. Quarantine agency analyzing the haplotype and colony social type of S. invicta for surveillance and control. Population genetic analysis using Microsatellite Alleleic data of 66 loci to trace the origin of the invasion. Through research cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), we have received samples and expanded our genetic information database. This study analyzed genetic differences between 15 invasive populations and 44 reference groups. As a result of microsatellite analysis, the domestic invasive population showed a genetic structure similar to those in Guangzhou, China, and Florida, USA.
