      • Haloactinobacterium album gen. nov., sp. nov., a halophilic actinobacterium, and proposal of Ruaniaceae fam. nov.

        <P>A Gram-staining-positive, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile and moderately halophilic actinobacterium, designated YIM 93306<SUP>T</SUP>, was isolated from a salt lake in Xinjiang province, north-west China, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain YIM 93306<SUP>T</SUP> grew in the presence of 2-16 % (w/v) NaCl and did not grow without NaCl. The peptidoglycan type was A4<I>α</I> with an l-Lys-l-Glu interpeptide bridge. The whole-cell sugars were glucosamine, arabinose, mannose and two unknown sugars. The predominant menaquinone was MK-8(H4). The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The polar lipids comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unknown phosphoglycolipid and one unknown phospholipid. The DNA G+C content was 68.3 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain YIM 93306<SUP>T</SUP> fell within the radius of the suborder <I>Micrococcineae</I>. Its closest phylogenetic neighbour was the type strain of <I>Ruania albidiflava</I> (AS 4.3142<SUP>T</SUP>; 96.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), the sole recognized species of the genus <I>Ruania</I>. Sequence similarities between strain YIM 93306<SUP>T</SUP> and members of other genera of the suborder <I>Micrococcineae</I> were <95.2 %. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis, phenotypic characteristics and chemotaxonomic differences, a novel genus and species, <I>Haloactinobacterium album</I> gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain of the species is YIM 93306<SUP>T</SUP> (=DSM 21368<SUP>T</SUP> =KCTC 19413<SUP>T</SUP> =CCTCC AB 208069<SUP>T</SUP>). Based on phylogenetic characteristics and 16S rRNA gene signature nucleotide patterns, the genera <I>Ruania</I> and <I>Haloactinobacterium</I> gen. nov. are proposed to belong to a novel family, <I>Ruaniaceae</I> fam. nov.</P>

      • Haloechinothrix alba gen. nov., sp. nov., a halophilic, filamentous actinomycete of the suborder Pseudonocardineae

        <P>A novel halophilic, filamentous actinomycete strain, designated YIM 93221<SUP>T</SUP>, was isolated from a salt lake in Xinjiang province, north-west China, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic characterization. The isolate grew with 9-23 % (w/v) NaCl and did not grow without NaCl. The isolate formed spiny aerial mycelium and did not form spores at maturity. The isolate contained <I>meso</I>-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and glucose, glucosamine, mannose and an unknown sugar as the major whole-cell sugars. The phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannosides and an unknown phospholipid. MK-8(H4) was the predominant menaquinone. The major fatty acid was iso-C16 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 68.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YIM 93221<SUP>T</SUP> formed a distinct lineage within the suborder <I>Pseudonocardineae</I> and showed 91.9-94.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with members of the suborder <I>Pseudonocardineae</I>. On the basis of the evidence from this polyphasic study, a novel genus and species, <I>Haloechinothrix alba</I> gen. nov., sp. nov., are proposed. The type strain of <I>Haloechinothrix alba</I> is YIM 93221<SUP>T</SUP> (=DSM 45207<SUP>T</SUP> =CCTCC AB 208140<SUP>T</SUP>).</P>

      • Kocuria halotolerans sp. nov., an actinobacterium isolated from a saline soil in China.

        <P>A Gram-positive actinobacterium, designated strain YIM 90716(T), was isolated from a saline soil sample collected from Ganjiahu Suosuo Forest National Nature Reserve in Xinjiang Province, north-west China. The new isolate contained lysine, glutamic acid and alanine with peptidoglycan type Lys-Ala(3) (variation A3alpha). The major phospholipids were phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The predominant menaqinone was MK-7(H(2)). The major fatty acids were anteiso-C(15 : 0), iso-C(16 : 0) and anteiso-C(17 : 0). The DNA G+C content of strain YIM 90716(T) was 68.0 mol%. Chemotaxonomic properties supported the affiliation of strain YIM 90716(T) to the genus Kocuria. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the organism was related most closely to Kocuria kristinae DSM 20032(T) (96.8 % similarity) and showed lower levels of 16S rRNA gene similarity (<96.5 %) with the type strains of other species of the genus Kocuria. The results of fatty acid analysis and physiological and biochemical tests allowed the genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain YIM 90716(T) from its closest relatives. On the basis of data from the present polyphasic study, strain YIM 90716(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Kocuria, for which the name Kocuria halotolerans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 90716(T) (=DSM 18442(T)=KCTC 19172(T)=CCTCC AB 206069(T)).</P>

        Formation Tracking Control for Multi-agent Systems: A Wave-equation based Approach

        This paper considers the formation tracking control problem of large-scaled Multi-Agent Systems (MAS)for which the model is based on a system of mutually independent wave Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). Thespatial derivatives in the equation correspond to the underlying communication topology of the agents. A leaderfollowermode is employed in the control algorithm, with which the agents on the boundary of PDEs are chosenas leaders knowing the tracking trajectory and all the other agents are followers. Each follower has only the informationof its own relative position and velocity to its topological neighbors. With a designed distributed controller,the formation tracking error is bounded by a constant proportional to the acceleration of the desired trajectory. Robustness of the control law to a perturbation in the velocity measurement is also discussed. Furthermore, somesimulation studies are provided to show the effectiveness of the control algorithm.

        IRS-2 Partially Compensates for the Insulin Signal Defects in IRS-1<sup>-/-</sup> Mice Mediated by miR-33

        Insulin signaling is coordinated by insulin receptor substrates (IRSs). Many insulin responses, especially for blood glucose metabolism, are mediated primarily through Irs-1 and Irs-2. Irs-1 knockout mice show growth retardation and insulin signaling defects, which can be compensated by other IRSs in vivo; however, the underlying mechanism is not clear. Here, we presented an Irs-1 truncated mutated mouse ($Irs-1^{-/-}$) with growth retardation and subcutaneous adipocyte atrophy. $Irs-1^{-/-}$ mice exhibited mild insulin resistance, as demonstrated by the insulin tolerance test. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) activity and phosphorylated Protein Kinase B (PKB/AKT) expression were elevated in liver, skeletal muscle, and subcutaneous adipocytes in Irs-1 deficiency. In addition, the expression of IRS-2 and its phosphorylated version were clearly elevated in liver and skeletal muscle. With miRNA microarray analysis, we found miR-33 was down-regulated in bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) of $Irs-1^{-/-}$ mice, while its target gene Irs-2 was up-regulated in vitro studies. In addition, miR-33 was down-regulated in the presence of Irs-1 and which was up-regulated in fasting status. What's more, miR-33 restored its expression in re-feeding status. Meanwhile, miR-33 levels decreased and Irs-2 levels increased in liver, skeletal muscle, and subcutaneous adipocytes of $Irs-1^{-/-}$ mice. In primary cultured liver cells transfected with an miR-33 inhibitor, the expression of IRS-2, PI3K, and phosphorylated-AKT (p-AKT) increased while the opposite results were observed in the presence of an miR-33 mimic. Therefore, decreased miR-33 levels can up-regulate IRS-2 expression, which appears to compensate for the defects of the insulin signaling pathway in Irs-1 deficient mice.

        Quality Adaptation of Intra-only Coded Video Transmission over Wireless Networks

        Variable wireless channel is a big challenge for real-time video applications, and the rate adaptation of realtimevideo streaming becomes a hot topic. Intra-video coding is important for high-quality video communicationand industrial video applications. In this paper, we proposed a novel adaptive scheme for real-time videotransmission with intra-only coding over a wireless network. The key idea of this scheme is to estimate theinstantaneous remaining capacity of the network to adjust the quality of the next several video frames, whichnot only can keep low queuing delay and ensure video quality, but also can respond to bandwidth changesquickly. We compare our scheme with three different schemes in the video transmission system. The experimentalresults show that our scheme has higher bandwidth utilization and faster bandwidth change response,while maintaining low queuing delay.

        Valorization of spent activated carbon in glycerine deodorization unit for methylene blue removal

        Spent Calgon Filtrasorb activated carbon (SAC) from glycerine deodorization unit was evaluated for the removal of methylene blue (MB). The SAC was used without further modifcation. The SAC was characterized for BET surface area, pH, pHpzc and FTIR to determine the textural and chemical properties of SAC. The batch adsorption study of MB was carried out under diferent initial concentrations (5–500 mg/L), pH (2–11) and contact time (0–200 h). The SAC was found to have high BET surface area, pore volume and average pore diameter of 735 m2 /g, 0.292 cm3 /g and 2.56 nm, respectively. The properties of SAC contributed to high MB adsorption capacity of 283 mg/g. The equilibrium data ftted well with Langmuir model, indicating monolayer adsorption; while the activation energy (Ea) of Dubinin–Radushkevitch (D–R) model is lower than 8 kJ/mol, signifying physisorption. The adsorption kinetics was best illustrated by pseudo-second-order model, while the intraparticle difusion and Boyd models suggested that flm difusion is the rate-controlling step. These fndings showed that Calgon Filtrasorb SAC from glycerine deodorization unit can be potentially reused an adsorbent for the removal of dyes.
