Purpose: Aortic dissection (AoD) is one of the most common catastrophes involving the aorta. Nevertheless, early diagnosis remains to be a challenge in the Emergency Department (ED), particularly in young individuals. In this study, we attempted to identify the characteristics of acute AoD among young individuals, particular in patients with Marfan syndrome. Materials and Methods: This was an retrospective chart-review study conducted in a tertiary referring hospital. The hospital database was queried for the combination of AoD and patients under age of 40 years. The medical charts were reviewed to obtain demographic data, clinical data and laboratory characteristics by using a standardized data collection sheet. A comparison between Marfan syndrome and non-Marfan syndrome patients was performed. Results: During the 10- years period, 18 of 344 patients with acute AoD were younger than 40 years-old. Patients with Marfan syndrome developed acute AoD at a younger age than patients without Marfan syndrome. The mean diastolic blood pressure was significantly lower in patients with Marfan syndrome upon presenting to the ED than those without. Patients with Marfan syndrome had trends toward higher risk of development of type A AoD, increased recurrence rate and higher mortality rate than those without. However, statistical significance was not present. Conclusion: ED physicians should have high alert to acute AoD in young patients presenting with severe unexplained chest and back pain, particularly in those patients with a history of heart diseases, hypertension, and Marfan syndrome or featuring Marfanoid habitus. Acute coronary syndrome, unexplained abdominal symptoms, and sudden cardiac arrest could be the initial manifestation of AoD in young patients. A low threshold to perform enhanced computed tomography may facilitate early diagnosis and timely treatment in this patient population. Post-traumatic cerebral infarction (PTCI) is a secondary insult which causes global cerebral hypoxia or hypoperfusion after traumatic brain injury, and carries a remarkable high mortality rate. PTCI is usually caused by blunt brain injury with gross hematoma and/or brain herniation. Herein, we present the case of a 91-year-old male who had sustained PTCI following a low-energy penetrating craniocerebral injury due to a nail without evidence of hematoma. The patient survived after a decompressive craniectomy, but permanent neurological damage occurred. This is the first case of profound PTCI following a low-energy penetrating craniocerebral nail injury and reminds clinicians of possibility this rare dreadful complication for care of head-injured patients.

Objective: Weight gain is an important risk factor for morbidity and mortality among patients with schizophrenia. We speculated that positive symptoms, related to dopaminergic hyperactivity and altered mesolimbic function, are associated with weight gain. Methods: Twenty-two antipsychotic-naïve, first-episode patients with schizophrenia were enrolled. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale was completed at enrollment and follow-up. Body mass index (BMI) was also measured. Results: The increase in BMI, after 6.04 ± 2.16 years of follow-up, was associated with positive symptoms, but not negative symptoms, before treatment with antipsychotics in antipsychotic-naïve patients with schizophrenia. Conclusion: This finding implied that dopaminergic hyperactivity could be an important factor to predict the treatment outcome. Body weight control is important for the health management of patients with schizophrenia with more severe positive symptoms.
Grey Neural Network-Based Forecasting System for Vision-Guided Robot Trajectory Tracking

This paper presents a grey neural network-based forecasting system (GNNFS) in solving the prediction problem. GNNFS adopts a grey model to predict the signal and a neural network (NN) to forecast the prediction error of the grey model. A sequential batch learning (SBL) is developed to adjust the weights of the NN. The proposed GNNFS is applied to a binocular robot, called an Eye-Robot, for human-robot interaction which involved predicting the trajectory of a participant’s hand and tracking the hand. By applying the SBL, the GNNFS can gradually learn to predict the trajectory of the hand and track it well. The experimental results show that the GNNFS can carry out the SBL in real-time for vision-guided robot trajectory tracking.
An Improvement on Robust H∞ Control for Uncertain Continuous-Time Descriptor Systems
Hung-Jen Lee,Shih-Wei Kau,Yung-Sheng Liu,Chun-Hsiung Fang,Jian-Liung Chen,Ming-Hung Tsai,Li Lee 대한전기학회 2006 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.4 No.3
This paper proposes a new approach to solve robust H∞ control problems for uncertain continuous-time descriptor systems. Necessary and sufficient conditions for robust H∞ control analysis and design are derived and expressed in terms of a set of LMIs. In the proposed approach, the uncertainties are allowed to appear in all system matrices. Furthermore, a couple of assumptions that are required in earlier design methods are not needed anymore in the present one. The derived conditions also include several interesting results existing in the literature as special cases.
Indicator Elimination for Locally Adaptive Scheme Using Data Hiding Technique
( Hon-hang Chang ),( Yung-chen Chou ),( Timothy K. Shih ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2014 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.8 No.12
Image compression is a popular research issue that focuses on the problems of reducing the size of multimedia files. Vector Quantization (VQ) is a well-known lossy compression method which can significantly reduce the size of a digital image while maintaining acceptable visual quality. A locally adaptive scheme (LAS) was proposed to improve the compression rate of VQ in 1997. However, a LAS needs extra indicators to indicate the sources, consequently the compression rate of LAS will be affected. In this paper, we propose a novel method to eliminate the LAS indicators and so improve the compression rate. The proposed method uses the concept of data hiding to conceal the indicators, thus further improving the compression rate of LAS. From experimental results, it is clearly demonstrated that the proposed method can actually eliminate the extra indicators while successfully improving the compression rate of the LAS.
3D contact analysis of conjugate spur gears by a complete mating process
James Shih-Shyn Wu,Shu-Ling Xu,Yi-Tsung Lin,Wei-Hung Chen,Yuan-Lung Lai 대한기계학회 2013 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.27 No.12
Instead of applying fixed boundary conditions to constrain and simplify material behavior in 2D models, the point and line contact of tooth surfaces are substituted by a face-contact model of teeth in this study. The inaccurate prediction of load, deformation, and stress in 3D contacts are solved. Most research uses one pair to three pairs of meshing teeth to simulate the mating process. However, describing the entire process of three contact zones during each mating pair is insufficient. By implementing a combined 3D face contact and finite element method, the contact stress analyses between two spur gear teeth are conducted in 11 different contact positions during a full mating process. The proposed approach provides a complete and effective solution to the contact problem in a quasi-dynamic manner. This model not only determines the load-sharing prediction but also verifies the applied boundary conditions.
3-D NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS FOR AIRFLOW WITHIN A PASSENGER COMPARTMENT
Chia-Hung Chien,Yung-Hsin Chen,Shih-Chieh Wu,Jiin-Yuh Jang 한국자동차공학회 2008 International journal of automotive technology Vol.9 No.4
People use cars so frequently that they always consider the air-conditioning, and thermal comfort of the driver and passenger when buying a new car. Therefore accurate simulation of the thermal performance of automobile air conditioners to improve human comfort has become increasingly important. In order to improve the thermal comfort of passengers, 3-D flow motion and thermal behavior within vehicles must be analyzed. In this paper, a numerical simulation was used to investigate thermal behavior in a vehicle. Because air temperature at an air vent is related to the cooling capacity of the air conditioner, the cooling capacity was calculated using ε -NTU (effective number of transfer unit) theoretical equations. Using the air temperature relationship between inlet and outlet vents as boundary conditions, a 3-D unsteady κ -ε turbulent model was used to give a transient analysis simulation of the temperature field and flow conditions in a vehicle’s passenger cabin. Cooling cycle analysis and conjugate heat transfer analysis at the inside surface of the cabin’s ceiling, floor and sides were also considered. The predicted temperature distributions in the vehicles passenger cabin were in good agreement with those obtained experimentally.
