Ultraviolet-assisted synthesis of encapsulating adhesives and their application for lifetime improvement of organic light emitting diodes

        Chen-Ming Chen,Ming-Hua Chung,Tsung-Eong Hsieh,Bohr-Ran Huang,Huai-En Hsieh,Fuh-Shyang Juang,Yu-Sheng Tsai,Mark O. Liu,Jen-Lien Lin 한국물리학회 2009 Current Applied Physics Vol.9 No.4

The lifetimes of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been successfully enhanced with the modulation of LiF thickness and the utilization of encapsulating adhesives, which have been successfully and quickly synthesized with UV irradiation. Experimental results demonstrate that LiF and lab-made encapsulating adhesives can block the invasion of moisture as well as oxygen in the atmosphere into the OLEDs so that the lifetimes of devices with their encapsulation are 18-folds longer than those without encapsulation. Curcumin Alleviates Dystrophic Muscle Pathology in mdx Mice

        Ying Pan,Chen Chen,Yue Shen,Chun-Hua Zhu,Gang Wang,Xiao-Chun Wang,Hua-Qun Chen,Min-Sheng Zhu 한국분자세포생물학회 2008 Molecules and cells Vol.25 No.4

Abnormal activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) probably plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy (DMD). In this report, we evaluated the efficacy of curcumin, a potent NF-κB inhibitor, in mdx mice, a mouse model of DMD. We found that it improved sarcolemmic integrity and enhanced muscle strength after intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection. Histological analysis revealed that the structural defects of myofibrils were reduced, and biochemical analysis showed that creatine kinase (CK) activity was decreased. We also found that levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the mdx mice were decreased by curcumin administration. EMSA analysis showed that NF-κB activity was also inhibited. We thus conclude that curcumin is effective in the therapy of muscular dystrophy in mdx mice, and that the mechanism may involve inhibition of NF-κB activity. Since curcumin is a nontoxic compound derived from plants, we propose that it may be useful for DMD therapy.

Distal Mean Nocturnal Baseline Impedance Predicts Pathological Reflux of Isolated Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Symptoms

        Hua-Nong Luo,Chen-Chi Wang,Ying-Cheng Lin,Chun-Yi Chuang,Yung-An Tsou,Ja-Chih Fu,Sheng-Shun Yang,Chi-Sen Chang,Han-Chung Lien 대한소화기 기능성질환∙운동학회 2023 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.29 No.2

Background/AimsDiagnosis of isolated laryngopharyngeal reflux symptoms (ILPRS), ie, without concomitant typical reflux symptoms (CTRS), remains difficult. Mean nocturnal baseline impedance (MNBI) reflects impaired mucosal integrity. We determined whether esophageal MNBI could predict pathological esophagopharyngeal reflux (pH+) in patients with ILPRS. MethodsIn this cross-sectional study conducted in Taiwan, non-erosive or low-grade esophagitis patients with predominant laryngopharyngeal reflux symptoms underwent combined hypopharyngeal multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH monitoring when off acid suppressants. Participants were divided into the ILPRS (n = 94) and CTRS (n = 63) groups. Asymptomatic subjects without esophagitis (n = 25) served as healthy controls. The MNBI values at 3 cm and 5 cm above the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and the proximal esophagus were measured. ResultsDistal but not proximal esophageal median MNBI values were significantly lower in patients with pH+ than in those with pH– (ILPRS in pH+ vs pH–: 1607 Ω vs 2709 Ω and 1885 Ω vs 2563 Ω at 3 cm and 5 cm above LES, respectively; CTRS in pH+ vs pH–: 1476 vs 2307 Ω and 1500 vs 2301 Ω at 3 cm and 5 cm above LES, respectively, P < 0.05 for all). No significant differences of any MNBI exist between any pH– subgroups and healthy controls. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve in the ILPRS group were 0.75 and 0.80, compared to the pH– subgroup and healthy controls (P < 0.001 for both), respectively. Interobserver reproducibility was good (Spearman correlation 0.93, P < 0.0001). ConclusionDistal esophageal MNBI predicts pathological reflux in patients with ILPRS.

Two-Dimensional ZnO Nanowalls for Gas Sensor and Photoelectrochemical Applications

        Sheng-Po Chang,Chen-Hua Wen,Shoou-Jinn Chang 대한금속·재료학회 2014 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.10 No.4

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowalls were vertically grown on a glass substrate through a fast, low-temperature, catalystfree process in a tube furnace. The morphology and microstructure of ZnO nanowalls were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. The ZnO nanowall films showed strong UV emission and preferential c-axis orientation, with a hexagonal structure. Potential applications of the ZnO nanowalls were further investigated through experiments. The sensitivity of ZnO-based carbon monoxide gas sensors increased with increasing temperature and reached a maximum value at 300°C. In photoelectrochemical experiments, direct photoelectrolysis of water to generate hydrogen was performed using the ZnO nanowalls as the working photoelectrode. For an external bias of 1.2 V, the photocurrent densities reached 0.037 A/cm2 under Xe lamp illumination.

      • GSTM1 Polymorphisms and Lung Cancer Risk in the Chinese Population: a Meta-Analysis Based on 47 Studies

        Chen, Xin-Ping,Xu, Wei-Hua,Xu, Da-Feng,Xie, Xian-He,Yao, Jia,Fu, Sheng-Miao Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.18

Although a number of studies have been conducted on the association between GSTM1 polymorphisms and lung cancer in China, this association remains elusive and controversial. To clarify the effects of GSTM1 polymorphisms on the risk of lung cancer, a meta-analysis was performed in the Chinese population. Related studies were identified from PubMed, Springer Link, Ovid, Chinese Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Chinese Biology Medicine (CBM) up to 5th April 2014. A total of 45 articles (47 studies) including 6,623 cases and 7,865 controls were involved in this meta-analysis. Overall, a significant association (OR = 1.45, 95%CI: 1.32-1.60) was found between the null GSTM1 and lung cancer risk when all studies in Chinese population pooled into the meta-analysis. In subgroup analyses stratified by quality score, geographic area and source of controls, the same results were observed under all the models. This meta-analysis showed that the null GSTM1 may be a potential biomarker for lung cancer risk in Chinese, but further studies with gene-gene and gene-environment interactions are required for definite conclusions.

      • Moisture Content Measurement on Peanuts by using Time Domain Reflectometry

( Sheng Peng Niu ),( Tzu Hua Chen ),( Tse Min Chen ) 한국농업기계학회 2018 한국농업기계학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.23 No.1

The Moisture content detection of non-homogeneous materials has always been a challenge, especially for agricultural products with time varied characteristics and specific compositions. For in-shelled peanuts, this research developed a system with which is able to detect moisture content promptly. Peanuts with high quality have to keep dry in all kinds of phases such as harvesting, storage, and processing. To prevent mold from breeding and the spread of aflatoxin, which will influence the value and quality severely, the moisture content of peanuts is a key parameter to be monitored and controlled. Therefore, a highly efficient device or mechanism will be required. However, there is still no any devices with enough accuracy and promptness to detect moisture content for peanuts yet. This study employed TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) technology to challenge this mission. Comparing with the results of traditional IR measurement and standard oven, which helps to set up a calibration curve, this research validates the proposed method to detect the moisture content of in-shell peanut finally.

Characterizations of Ag-catalyzed ZnO nanostructures prepared by vapor–solid mechanism

        Su-Hua Yang,Pao-Chih Chen,Sheng-Yu Hong 한국물리학회 2009 Current Applied Physics Vol.9 No.2

This paper presents the synthesis and field emission characteristics of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures grown on Ag-deposited Si substrate by using the vapor–solid (VS) mechanism. The morphology of the ZnO nanostructures was related to source and substrate temperatures. Nanowhiskers, nanotips and well-aligned nanorods were grown at substrate temperatures of 620, 650 and 680℃, respectively. A strong bluish-green photoluminescence (PL) indicated that the nanostructures had many surface defects correlated with oxygen vacancies. Field emission analyses showed that the turn-on fields of ZnO nanowhiskers, nanotips and well-aligned nanorods were 4.5, 5.8 and 6.1 V/㎛, respectively. The high emitter density and high aspect ratio of the well-aligned nanorods resulted in an enhancement in emission current density. Furthermore, the field emission stability of the well-aligned nanorods was better than that of the nanowhiskers and nanotips. The emission current densities of the ZnO nanowhiskers, nanotips and well-aligned nanorods, measured after continuous operation for 6 h, were approximately 2.05, 4.68 and 20.5 μA/㎠, respectively. Effective Antiviral Activity of the Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Sunitinib Malate against Zika Virus

        Lin Chen-Sheng,Huang Su-Hua,Yan Bo-Yu,Lai Hsueh-Chou,Lin Cheng-Wen 대한감염학회 2021 Infection and Chemotherapy Vol.53 No.4

Introduction: Zika virus (ZIKV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, causes the outbreaks of Latin America in 2015 - 2016, with the incidence of neurological complications. Sunitinib malate, an orally bioavailable malate salt of the tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is suggested as a broadspectrum antiviral agent against emerging viruses like severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and SARS-CoV-2. Materials and Methods: This study investigated the antiviral efficacy and antiviral mechanisms of sunitinib malate against ZIKV infection using cytopathic effect reduction, virus yield, and time-of-addition assays. Results: Sunitinib malate concentration-dependently reduced ZIKV-induced cytopathic effect, the expression of viral proteins, and ZIKV yield in supernatant with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 0.015 μM, and the selectivity index of greater than 100 against ZIKV infection, respectively. Sunitinib malate had multiple antiviral actions during entry and post-entry stages of ZIKV replication. Sunitinib malate treatment at entry stage significantly reduced the levels of ZIKV RNA replication with the reduction of (+) RNA to (-) RNA ratio and the production of new intracellular infectious particles in infected cells. The treatment at post-entry stage caused a concentration-dependent increase in the levels of ZIKV (+) RNA and (-) RNA in infected cells, along with enlarging the ratio of (+) RNA to (-) RNA, but caused a pointed increase in the titer of intracellular infectious particles by 0.01 and 0.1 μM, and a substantial decrease in the titer of intracellular infectious particles by 1 μM. Conclusion: The study discovered the antiviral actions of sunitinib malate against ZIKV infection, demonstrating a repurposed, host-targeted approach to identify potential antiviral drugs for treating emerging and global viral diseases.

Endovascular Treatment for Iliac Vein Compression Syndrome: a Comparison between the Presence and Absence of Secondary Thrombosis

        Wen-Sheng Lou,Jian-Ping Gu,Xu He,Liang Chen,Hao-Bo Su,Guo-Ping Chen,Jing-Hua Song,Tao Wang 대한영상의학회 2009 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.10 No.2

Objective: To evaluate the value of early identification and endovascular treatment of iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS), with or without deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Materials and Methods: Three groups of patients, IVCS without DVT (group 1, n = 39), IVCS with fresh thrombosis (group 2, n = 52) and IVCS with non-fresh thrombosis (group 3, n = 34) were detected by Doppler ultrasonography, magnetic resonance venography, computed tomography or venography. The fresh venous thrombosis were treated by aspiration and thrombectomy, whereas the iliac vein compression per se were treated with a self-expandable stent. In cases with fresh thrombus, the inferior vena cava filter was inserted before the thrombosis suction, mechanical thrombus ablation, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, stenting or transcatheter thrombolysis. Results: Stenting was performed in 111 patients (38 of 39 group 1 patients and 73 of 86 group 2 or 3 patients). The stenting was tried in one of group 1 and in three of group 2 or 3 patients only to fail. The initial patency rates were 95% (group 1), 89% (group 2) and 65% (group 3), respectively and were significantly different (p = 0.001). Further, the six month patency rates were 93% (group 1), 83% (group 2) and 50% (group 3), respectively, and were similarly significantly different (p = 0.001). Both the initial and six month patency rates in the IVCS patients (without thrombosis or with fresh thrombosis), were significantly greater than the patency rates of IVCS patients with non-fresh thrombosis. Conclusion: From the cases examined, the study suggests that endovascular treatment of IVCS, with or without thrombosis, is effective. Protective effects of l-theanine on rats with dextran sulfate sodium-induced infl ammatory bowel disease

        Ling Chen,Wen-jun Xiao,Qiong-xian Yan,Zhi-hua Gong,Sheng Zhang,Li Zeng,Ming Yang,Yan-he Zhou 대한약학회 2020 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.43 No.8

The aim of this study is to evaluate the antiinflammatory and protective eff ects of L -theanine in infl ammatorybowel disease (IBD) and to identify the underlyingmolecular mechanisms. Rats were pre-treated with L -theanineat 0, 50, 200, or 800 mg/kg/day. IBD was induced inrats using dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). Histopathologicalanalysis suggests that L -theanine can suppress DSS-inducedIBD with signifi cant inhibition of infl ammation in large andsmall intestinal tissues. Moreover, the 200 mg/kg/day L -theanine-treated DSS group had higher body and small intestineweights, a lower disease activity index and expression ofinfl ammatory factors than the DSS group without pre-treatment. In RNA sequencing and tandem mass tag labelinganalyses, large number of mRNAs and proteins expressionlevel diff ered when compared with the DSS-induced ratswith and without 200 mg/kg/day L -theanine pre-treatment. Moreover, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathwayanalysis indicates the anti-infl ammatory activities ofL -theanine in DSS-induced IBD, with a high representationof genes in “Cholesterol metabolism” and “Retinol metabolism”pathways. Analysis of protein–protein interaction networksfurther indicates the involvement of these two pathways. These studies suggest that medium-dose L -theaninepre-treatment could ameliorate DSS-induced IBD throughmolecular mechanisms involving cholesterol and retinolmetabolism.
