This study was conducted to compare the expression pattern of the specific factors associated with pregnancy and angiogenesis during early pregnancy in Hanwoo. Synchronized female Hanwoo ($4{\sim}6$ year-old) were inseminated artificially. After 10 weeks after artificial insemination (AI), the pregnancy was tested by rectal palpation method. Three pregnant and non-pregnant Hanwoo were used in this experiment, respectively. The plasma progesterone level was measured by ELISA. Western blot analysis was performed to detect the expression of pregnancy associated glycoprotein (PAG) or angiogenic factors (VEGF, B-FGF, ANP-1, and TIE-2). The plasma P4 level was increase gradually in pregnant group and maintained high level. The concentration of PAG was significantly higher from $5^{th}$ weeks in pregnant group compared to that of non-pregnant group (p<0.05). The concentrations of the VEGF (p<0.05), B-FGF (p<0.05), and ANP-1 (p<0.05) were significantly increased from $6^{th}\;or\;7^{th}$ week after AI in pregnant group, respectively. And the intensity of TIE-2, ANP-1 receptor, was well matched with ANP-1 (p<0.05). Taken together, it can be postulated that the blood vessels connected with fetus and dam were formed dramatically around 40 days after AI, because the expression levels of the angiogenic factors were increased significantly from this time in pregnant Hanwoo.

Polymer Stabilization of Liquid-Crystal Blue Phase II toward Photonic Crystals

<P>The temperature ranges where a pure simple-cubic blue phase (BPII) emerges are quite narrow compared to the body-centered-cubic BP (BPI) such that the polymer stabilization of BPII is much more difficult. Hence, a polymer-stabilized BPII possessing a wide temperature range has been scarcely reported. Here, we fabricate a polymer-stabilized BPII over a temperature range of 50 degrees C including room temperature. The fabricated polymer-stabilized BPII is confirmed via polarized optical microscopy, Bragg reflection, and Kossel diagram observations. Furthermore, we demonstrate reflective BP liquid-crystal devices utilizing the reflectance voltage performance as a potential application of the polymer-stabilized BPII. Our work demonstrates the possibility of practical application of the polymer stabilized BPII to photonic crystals.</P>
Risk Factors for Postoperative Recurrence in Korean Patients with Crohn’s Disease

Background/Aims: A considerable number of patients with Crohn’s disease still need intestinal resection surgery. Postoperative recurrence is an important issue in Crohn’s disease management, including the selection of high-risk patients. Eastern Asian patients showed several differences from Caucasian patients. Therefore, we investigated the postoperative surgical recurrence outcome and identified risk factors in Korean patients. Methods: Clinical data of 372 patients with Crohn’s disease who underwent first intestinal resection between January 2004 and August 2014 at 14 hospitals in Korea were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Over the follow-up period, 50 patients (17.1%) showed surgical recurrence. The cumulative surgical recurrence rate was 6.5% at 1 year and 15.4% at 7 years. Age under 16 (p=0.011; hazard ratio [HR], 5.136; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.576 to 16.731), colonic involvement (p=0.023; HR , 2.011; 95% CI, 1.102 to 3.670), and the presence of perianal disease at surgery (p=0.008; HR, 2.239; 95% CI, 1.236 to 4.059) were independent risk factors associated with surgical recurrence. Postoperative thiopurine treatment (p=0.002; HR, 0.393; 95% CI, 0.218 to 0.710) was a protective factor for surgical recurrence. Conclusions: Among the disease characteristics at surgery, younger age, colonic location, and perianal lesions were independent risk factors for surgical recurrence. Postoperative thiopurine treatment significantly reduced the incidence of surgical recurrence.

Bacillus firmus가 생산하는 cyclodextrin glycosyltran-sferase(CGTase)를 ammonium sulfate 침전, DEAE-Sephadex A-50 및 Sephdex G-100 column chromatography로 분리, 정제하였다. 이 방법으로 수율은 12%, 정제도는 49배인 SDS-PAGE 상에서 단일 band의 효소 단백질을 얻을 수 있었다. 정제된 CGTase는 Phast system의 SDS-polyacrylamide gel 전기영동에 의하여 분자량은 80,000dalton, isoelectric focusing으로 등전점은 9.6으로 추정되는 단백질이었다. 이 효소의 최적 활성 pH와 온도는 8.0,65℃이였으며, pH와 열안정성은 pH 5.5~9.0,50℃이였다. Soluble starch를 기질로 하여 24시간 효소반응한 액의 α- : β- : γ-cyclodextrin의 생성비율은 0.01 : 2.90 : 1.00으로 β- 및 γ-cyclodextrin을 주로 생산하였다. The cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase(EC 3.2.1.19) from Bacillus firmus was purified by precipitating with ammonium sulfate followed by, DEAE-Sephadex A-50 column chromatography and Sephadex G-100 column chromatography. In this way, we were able to obtain the single band protein on SDS-PAGE with a yield of 12%, whose purity was 49 fold. The purified CGTase was identified as a protein having molecular weight of approximately 80,000 dalton and isoelectric point of 9.6. The optimum pH and temperature for the enzyme activity were 8.0 and 65℃, respectively. The enzyme was stable at between pH 5.5 and 9.0 and up to 50℃. After 24hr of enzyme reaction using soluble starch as substrate, the ratio of α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrin production was 0.01 : 2.90 : 1.00, respectively. And this CGTase pro-duced mainly β- and γ-cyclodextrin.
진공펌프 기반 기체분리막 제습장치의 제습 및 에너지 성능에 대한 실험적 연구

In this work, the dehumidification and energy performance of a vacuum-based membrane dehumidifier for an air conditioning system were evaluated experimentally. The prototype was tested on the dehumidification characteristic (i.e., humidity ratio difference, moisture removal rate, and dehumidification effectiveness) and the energy performance (i.e., coefficient of performance) under various air conditions. The air conditions for evaluating the dehumidification performance were selected on three parameters: air temperature, air humidity, and air velocity. The experiment results showed that the vacuum-based membrane dehumidifier dried the air without temperature change, and the overall dehumidification performance of the prototype showed that the humidity ratio difference was range from 3.8 g/kg to 14 g/kg, the moisture removal rate was range from 0.12 kg/h to 1.0 kg/h, the dehumidification effectiveness was range from 36% to 81%, and the COP was range from 0.08 to 0.48 respectively. The parametric analysis showed that the dehumidification performance (i.e., the humidity ratio difference and the moisture removal rate) and energy performance was significantly affected by the inlet humidity ratio and the airflow rate. The main effect parameter of dehumidification effectiveness was the airflow rate.
