Ruminal impaction with an indigestible foreign body in long-tailed goral (Naemorhedus caudatus)

A 6-year-old female long-tailed goral (Naemorhedus caudatus , goral) was admitted to the Gangwon wildlife medical rescue center due to severe starvation and hypothermia. The goral displayed clinical signs of severe weight loss, dehydration, lethargy, regurgitation, hypothermia, and bloating, with blood tests showing a decrease in albumin, calcium, glucose, and sodium. Supportive care was given through heating, oxygen supply, and fluid therapy, but the goral’s condition worsened, and the goral died three days after admission. Radiographic and computed tomography scans revealed the presence of an indigestible foreign body (IFB) in the rumen, which was confirmed during the necropsy. The cause of goral’s death was identified as chronic rumen impaction caused by the IFB (a ball of string), with other pathological findings including bloating, the presence of serous ascites, and congestion of digestive organs. Blood biochemical changes, clinical signs, and veterinary medical imaging diagnosis can be helpful in diagnosing ruminal impaction. This case report can provide valuable information for the diagnosis and treatment of ruminal impaction caused by IFB in endangered gorals, which may include rumenotomy or other surgical procedures.
Surveillance of African swine fever infection in wildlife and environmental samples in Gangwon-do

African swine fever (ASF) is fatal to domestic pigs and wild boars (Sus scrofa ) and affects the domes-tic pig industry. ASF is transmitted directly through the secretions of infected domestic pigs or wild boars, an essential source of infection in disease transmission. ASFV is also very stable in the envi-ronment. Thus, the virus is detected in the surrounding environment where ASF-infected carcasses are found. In this study, ASF infection monitoring was conducted on the swab and whole blood samples from wild animals, various hematopoietic arthropod samples that could access infected wild boar carcasses or habitats to cause maintenance and spread of disease, and soil samples of wild boar habitats. ASF viral DNA detection was confirmed negative in 317 wildlife and environmental samples through a real-time polymerase chain reaction. However, ASF occurs in the wild boars and spreads throughout the Korean peninsula. Therefore, it is necessary to trace the route of ASF virus infection by a continuous vector. Additional monitoring of various samples with potential ASF infection is needed to help the epidemiologic investigation and disease prevention.

We describe a case of gastrocnemius muscle rupture in a goral that got caught in a live trap set up to capture wild boars. We established a diagnostic method based on clinical signs and imaging examination findings, including magnetic resonance imaging for gastrocnemius muscle rupture with symptoms such as hindlimb lameness and plantigrade posture of unknown cause in wild animals. Although this condition is rare, this report will help veterinarians diagnose several diseases of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems in wild animals. This is the first report of successful diagnosis and treatment of gastrocnemius muscle rupture in gorals in Korea.

Although various imaging evaluation methods have been developed and utilized, thoracic radiography remains essential and is the top priority for diagnosing and managing cardiac diseases. Thoracic radiographic measurements associated with the vertebral heart scale (VHS) and caudal vena cava (CVC) can objectively diagnose cardiac disease in many animals. In particular, VHS measurement is primarily used to evaluate the dimensions of the heart size on thoracic radiographs and can measure cardiomegaly more objectively. Additionally, the value of the CVC compared with the aorta (Ao) and the length of vertebrae (VL) can be used as valuable parameters in right congestive heart failure. To describe the CVC/Ao and CVC/VL ratios in 10 long-tailed gorals (Naemorhedus caudatus) without subjective radiographic evidence of cardiac diseases. The VHS, CVC, Ao, and VL of gorals were measured in the right lateral (RL) view of the thoracic radiographs. In the RL view of 10 gorals, the VHS was 9.31 ± 0.55 vertebrae (v), the CVC/Ao ratio was 0.84 ± 0.13, and the CVC/VL ratio was 0.67 ± 0.09. Additionally, the thoracic morphology of gorals was determined to be intermediate (thoracic depth-to-width ratio, 1.04 ± 0.09, 0.75-1.25). This study confirmed that VHS was significantly correlated with CVC and Ao, and measuring and comparing each value would help diagnose cardiac diseases in gorals. The radiographic measurements in this study will allow veterinarians to diagnose several cardiac diseases in gorals.

Korean goral (Neamorhedus caudatus) is registered as a natural monument number 217 by South Korea Cultural Heritage Administration. It is also recognized as the endangered speciesⅠ by Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). In this study, blood samples of Korean goral were collected to make reference intervals. Blood sampling was conducted on 19 numbers of Korean gorals (ten females, nine males), which were reared in Korean Goral Restoration Center. For total samples, the reference intervals of hematological parameters were: white blood cell 7.69∼10.87 K/μA; hematocrit 36.73∼46.18%; red blood cell 10.72∼12.86 M/μA; hemoglobin 12.79∼15.14 g/dL; mean corpuscular volume 33.15∼36.75 fL; mean corpuscular hemoglobin 11.53∼12.23 pg; mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration 32.64-35.91 g/dL and red blood cell distribution width 39.2 ∼43.46%. For total samples of each parameters, the following results were obtained for serum biochemistry: glucose 111.81∼153.77 mg/dL; blood urea nitrogen 22.35∼28.91 mg/dL; creatine 1.22∼1.84 mg/dL; phosphate 4.57∼6 mg/dL; calcium 8.7∼9.1 mg/dL; total protein 6.53∼6.92 g/dL; albumin 3.1∼3.48 g/dL; globulin 3.26∼3.62 g/dL; alanine aminotransferase 56.7∼158.56 U/L; aspartate aminotransferase 230.35∼473.06 U/L; alkaline phosphatase 178.06∼332.47 U/L; gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase 131.6-∼181.24 U/L; total bilirubin 1.47∼2.12 mg/dL; cholesterol 46.48∼71.52 mg/dL; amylase 16.3∼26.03 U/L; sodium 150.43∼153.88 mmol/L; potassium 3.98∼4.6 mmol/L and chlorine 109.48∼113.26 mmol/L. The ranges of values were similar campared to previous studies except in the case of RDW value, which showed higher range than the RDW value of a previous study. The reference intervals from this study will be useful data for treatment and management of gorals.
주택금융 및 보금자리론 실태조사 응답자들의 주택담보대출 만족 응답 일관성에 영향을 미치는 요인

본 연구는 주택금융 및 보금자리론 실태조사 설문자료에 나타난 설문지 응답자들의 주택담보대출 만족 요인에 대한 응답 일관성을 분석한다. 설문 가운데 주택담보대출 만족과 관련한 동일한 선택지가 있는 두 문항을 활용하여 응답자 특성 가운데 이 문항들에 대한 응답 일관성과 유의한 관계를 나타내는 요인을 추출한다. 응답자 연령, 성별, 학력, 거주 지역, 소득, 결혼, 맞벌이 등 응답자의 일반적인 특성을 통제한 분석 결과 다른 가구에 비해 대출모집인이나 부동산 중개업자에게서 주택담보대출 관련 정보를 취득한 가구는 다른 가구에 비해 주택담보대출 만족 요인관련 질문에서 응답 일관성이 낮았고, 자산 증대를 위해 주택을 구입한 가구와 주택담보대출 월상환금에 부담을 느끼는 가구는 상대적으로 일관성 있는 응답을 한 것으로 나타났다. 대출의 만기, 금리유형 인지 여부, 자가 거주나 임차 거주 여부 등은 일관성과 유의한 관계가 나타나지 않았다. 이 결과는 주택담보대출의 상품성에 대한 정밀한 분석이 필요한 주택금융공사 및 기타 금융기관들이 만족 요인 관련 조사에서 이러한 특성을 가진 가구들의 응답에 대해서는 유의하여 해석할 필요가 있다는 것을 암시한다. This study analyzes the consistency of responses to the satisfaction factors for housing mortgage loans of the respondents shown in the Housing finance and Bogeumjari loan survey data. Using two questions with the similar options related to mortgage satisfaction in the questionnaire, factors showing a significant relationship among the characteristics of respondents with the consistency of responses to these questions are examined. As a result of the analysis after controlling for general characteristics such as age, gender, education, residence area, income, marriage, and dual income, the response consistency of households who obtained information on mortgages from loan brokers or real estate agents was lower than that of other households. It was found that the households who purchased a house to increase their assets and the households who felt burdened by the monthly repayment of the mortgage gave more consistent responses to the questions related to the satisfaction factor of the mortgage than other households. The households awareness of loan maturity and/or interest rate type, and the type of residence - self-residence or rental residence showed no significant relationship with consistency. This result suggests that the Korea Housing Finance Corporation and other financial institutions, which require a detailed analysis of the marketability of mortgage loans, need to carefully interpret the responses of households with the significant characteristics on the mortgage satisfaction factors.
