This paper presented surge protective method and devices for shipboard electrical and electronics devices. Parallel type surge protective devices (SPD) for the 440 [V] and a series type SPD for the 220 [V] rated voltage were designed and fabricated. The performance were evaluated by an un-powered test which applies the 8/20 [㎲] surge current Lip to 10 [㎄]. The maximum clamping voltage of the parallel and the series type SPD were 1,032 [V] and 875 [V], respectively.

To investigate the growth promoting effects of an herbal medicine formulation (HM-10), Sprague Dawley (SD) male rats (3 weeks old) were divided into 3 groups (8 rats/group). The control group was given a daily oral administration of saline, and the treatment groups, HM-1 and HM-2, were given daily administrations of HM-10 (500 and 1,000 mg/kg BW, respectively). The cumulative tibial bone growth of the HM-1 and HM-2 groups (22.5 and 20.8 mm, respectively), and their cumulative femur bone growth (19.4 and 18.2 mm, respectively), were significantly different compared to the control group (7.5 mm of tibial growth and 7.7 mm of femur growth) (p<0.05). Lastly, the growth hormone levels of the HM-1 and HM-2 groups (1.70 and 1.79 ng/mL, respectively), as well as their insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels (165.1 and 171.7 ng/ mL, respectively) showed significant differences compared to the control (0.93 ng/mL of growth hormone and 125.6 ng/mL of IGF-1) (p<0.05).

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>An accurate method for the analysis of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in rice grain was developed using trimethylsilyl (TMS) derivatization and stable isotope dilution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. When this method was used with GABA‑d6 as an internal standard (IS), the observed GABA concentration was maintained at 100% of the initial concentration with increasing storage time of the vial in the autosampler. In contrast, when using ribitol as an IS and multiple injections from one vial or single injections from different vials, the observed GABA concentration was 85 and 113% of the initial concentration upon increased storage time, respectively. The improved method recoveries at two different spike levels were between 93.3 and 97.8%, with relative standard deviations of less than 3.3%. The GABA content of resveratrol-enriched transgenic rice was compared with that of its non-transgenic counterpart from two field sites, and statistically non-significant differences were observed between the two grains.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> GABA quantification with GC–MS suffers from low stability of TMS derivatives. </LI> <LI> Using GABA‑d6 as an internal standard overcomes low stability in this new method. </LI> <LI> GABA content in resveratrol-enriched transgenic and non-transgenic rice was examined. </LI> <LI> GABA variability is a result of grain growth location rather than transgenesis. </LI> </UL> </P>

Excessive application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer to support switchgrass growth for bioenergy production may cause adverse environmental effects. The objective of this study was to determine optimum N application rate to increase biomass yield of switchgrass and to reduce adverse environmental effects related to N. Switchgrass was planted in May 2008 and biomass yield, N uses of switchgrass, nitrate (NO₃) leaching, and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emission were evaluated from 2010 through 2011. Total N removal significantly increased with N rate despite the fact that yield did not increased with above 56 kg N ha-1 of N rate. Apparent nitrogen recoveries were 4.81 and 5.48% at 56 and 112 kg N ha-1 of N rate, respectively. Nitrogen use efficiency decreased into half with increasing N rate from 56 to 112 kg N ha-1. Nitrate leaching and N₂O emission were related to N use of switchgrass. There was no significant difference of cumulative NO₃ leaching between 0 and 56 kg N ha-1 but, it significantly increased at 112 kg N ha-1. There was no significant difference of cumulative N₂O emission among N rates in crest, but it significantly increased at 112 kg N ha-1 in toe. Excessive N application rate (above 56 kg N ha-1) beyond plant requirement could accelerate NO₃ leaching and N₂O emission in switchgrass field. Overall, 56 kg N ha-1 might be optimum N application rate in reducing economic waste on N fertilizer and adverse environmental impacts.

Objective: The study’s aim was to develop and standardize a Korean version of the University of California San Diego Performance-based Skills Assessment (K-UPSA), which is used to evaluate the daily living function of patients with schizophrenia. Methods: Study participants were 78 patients with schizophrenia and 27 demographically matched healthy controls. We evaluated the clinical states and cognitive functions to verify K-UPSA’s reliability and validity. For clinical states, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Clinical Global Impression-Schizophrenia scale, and Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale and Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale-fourth revision were used. The Schizophrenia Cognition Rating Scale, Short-form of Korean-Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test were used to assess cognitive function. Results: The K-UPSA had statistically significant reliability and validity. The K-UPSA has high internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha, 0.837) and test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient, 0.381-0.792; p<0.001). The K-UPSA had significant discriminant validity (p<0.001). Significant correlations between the K-UPSA’s scores and most of the scales and tests listed above demonstrated K-UPSA’s concurrent validity (p<0.001). Conclusion: The K-UPSA is useful to evaluate the daily living function in Korean patients with schizophrenia.

The clinical manifestations of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD) overlap and differential diagnosis may be difficult. However, among the diagnostic criteria of DLB, severe neuroleptic sensitivity is strongly suggestive of DLB. We report a case of a 79-yr-old woman who developed with acute confusion state after low dose quetiapine medication.
Severe ileus after colonoscopy in a patient on peritoneal dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is associated with the development of various complications, such as exit site infection or peritonitis, and rarely, intestinal obstruction in prolonged PD patients with recurrent peritonitis. However, post-colonoscopy acute intestinal obstruction has not been reported in PD patients to date. Herein, we report a case of severe ileus after a colonoscopy without previous episodes of peritonitis in a PD patient. A 51-year-old man undergoing PD for 7 years visited our emergency department due to severe abdominal pain and vomiting after colonoscopic polypectomy. A simple abdominal radiography and abdominal computed tomo-graphy showed ileus with collapsed distal ileal loop. A peritoneal dialysate study revealed no evidence of peritonitis. The patient was treated with decompression therapy, and ileus was successfully treated without complications. This case suggests that it is not only necessary to prevent peritonitis, but also important to monitor the development of ileus after colonoscopy in PD patients.
