<P>In this study, cation and anion exchange composite membranes were prepared using a modified poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) rubbery tri-block copolymer (SEBS) and polystyrene (PS) nano particles. The modification processes were sulfonation and amination via chloromethylation, respectively. The cation and anion exchange composite membranes were then prepared by solvent casting and evaporation using modified SEBS and PS particles. After preparing the composite membranes, characterization was performed via FT-IR, NMR and DMA. In addition, the electrochemical characteristics of the composite membranes, such as electrical resistance, ion conductivity and I-V curve, were measured and compared. Consequently, the electrochemical properties of the composite membranes were relative to the contents of the particles due to the ion exchange properties of the particles. However, the mechanical property of the composite membranes was inversely proportional to the contents of the particles.</P>

Cassia tora fiber supplement consisting of 2 g of soluble fiber extracted from Cassia semen (C. toraL.), 200mg of .-tocopherol, 500 mg of ascorbic acid, and 300 mg of maltodextrin was formulated in a pack, and given to 15 type IIdiabetic subjects (seven men and eight women 57.1. 2.9 years old) with instructions to take two packs per day for 2 months.Placebo contained maltodextrin only with a little brown caramel color. Lifestyle factors and dietary intakes of the subjectswere not altered during the 2-month period. Serum total cholesterol was moderately (P. .1) decreased in the C. tora groupcompared with the age- and gender-matched placebo group, as was the ratio of apolipoprotein B to apolipoprotein A1 (P. .1). Levels of serum triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol tended to decrease more in the C. tora-sup-plemented group than in the placebo group. Serum .-tocopherol was increased (P. .01) but lipid peroxides were not sig-nificantly lower in the C. toragroup. Fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and activitiesof serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase were not changed by the fiber supplement. We concludedthat C. torasupplements can help improve serum lipid status in type II diabetic subjects without serious adverse effects.

Single active-layer structured dual-function devices using hybrid polymer–quantum dots
Son, Dong-Ick,Park, Dong-Hee,Ie, Sang-Yub,Choi, Won-Kook,Choi, Ji-Won,Li, Fushan,Kim, Tae-Whan IOP Pub 2008 Nanotechnology Vol.19 No.39
<P>We demonstrate hybrid polymer–quantum dot dual-function devices with a single active-layer structure consisting of CdSe/ZnS semiconductor quantum dots dispersed with poly <I>N</I>-vinylcarbazole (PVK) and 1,3,5-tirs-(<I>N</I>-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl) benzene (TPBi) fabricated on an indium–tin-oxide (ITO)/glass substrate by using a simple spin-coating technique. The dual-function devices are composed of light-emitting diodes (LED) on the top side and nonvolatile organic bistable memory devices (OBD) on the bottom side and can show electroluminescence (EL) along with electrical bistability concurrently. Both the functionality of LEDs and OBDs can be successfully achieved by adding an electron transport layer (ETL) TPBi to the OBD to attain an LED in which the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level of TPBi is positioned at the energy level between the conduction band of CdSe/ZnS and the LiF/Al electrode. Through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study, it is revealed that CdSe/ZnS QDs distributed on the interface of the hole transport layer (HTL) and ETL significantly take part in the electroluminescence process rather than those existing at the outer surface of the ETL. </P>

<P> Lactoferrin (Lf) has been implicated in the regulation of cell growth. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this effect remains to be elucidated. In this study, we show that Lf is involved in the cell cycle control system in a variety of cell lines, through retinoblastoma protein (Rb) - mediated growth arrest. We observed that Lf induces the expression of Rb, a signal mediator of cell cycle control, and that a majority of this Lf-induced Rb persists in a hypophosphorylated form. In addition, we determined that Lf specifically augments the level of a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, p21, but not p27. Upon treatment with Lf, H1299 cells expressing defective p53 effected an augmentation of endogenous p21 levels, which may contribute to the accumulation of hypophosphorylated Rb. A substantial quantity of active Rb binds more efficiently to E2F1 in cells that express Lf and consequently blocks the expression of an E2F1-responsive gene, thereby suggesting that Lf plays a crucial role in the inhibition of tumor cell growth. Therefore, we conclude that the antiproliferative effects of Lf can likely be attributed to the elevated levels of hypophosphorylated Rb. </P>
