Repeated dose toxicity of alfa-cypermethrin in rats

        S Manna,D Bhattacharyya,TK Mandal,S Das 대한수의학회 2004 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.5 No.3

The present study was performed to investigate the subacute effect of α-cypermethrin (α-CP) in rats. Alfacypermethrin a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and oral LD50 was investigated after administering orally different doses in rats and was determined as 145 mg/kg. Other groups of rats were given repeated daily oral dose (1/10 LD50) of α-CP for 30 days. The animals were sacrificed on 31st day. Activities of various enzymes, cytochrome P450 and b5 contents in liver, hepatic antioxidant status, tissue residue concentration, haemogram and pathological changes were studied. It increased the serum aminotransaminases (AST,ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities and blood glucose level significantly. α-CP decreased RBC count, PCV and Hb level significantly. It significantly decreased cytochrome P450 in liver. Residues were present in different tissues. It increased malondialdehyde (MDA) level, while decreased the activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glycogen level in liver significantly. Mild to moderate histological alterations were observed in lungs, liver, stomach, kidneys, testes and cerebellum. So repeated daily oral doses of α-CP at 1/10LD50 altered the biochemical parameters, decreased cytochrome P450 content, antioxidant status, which correlated with histopathological changes of tissues.

Diarrhoea-related knowledge and practice of physicians in urban slums of Kolkata, India

        KANUNGO, S.,MAHAPATRA, T.,BHADURI, B.,MAHAPATRA, S.,CHAKRABORTY, N. D.,MANNA, B.,SUR, D. Cambridge University Press 2014 Epidemiology and infection Vol.142 No.2

<B>SUMMARY</B><P>Diarrhoeal management practices are unsatisfactory in India especially in the slum areas. Dearth of information regarding physicians' diarrhoea-related knowledge and practice in India ncessitated this cross-sectional study of allopathic practitioners in the slums of Kolkata, to assess the distribution and interrelationship between physicians' characteristics, knowledge and practice regarding diarrhoea. A total of 264 randomly selected consenting practitioners were interviewed using a field-tested questionnaire. Nineteen percent had good overall knowledge, 49% and 80% prescribed antibiotics to diarrhoea and cholera patients, respectively, and 55% advised stool examination for every case. Qualified and Government physicians had better knowledge regarding diarrhoea [MBBS: odds ratio (OR) 5·96, <I>P</I> < 0·001; postgraduates: OR 9·33, <I>P</I> < 0·001; Government physicians: OR 11·49, <I>P</I> < 0·0001] and were less likely to prescribe antibiotics for all diarrhoea cases (MBBS: OR 0·30, <I>P</I> = 0·002; postgraduates: OR 0·20, <I>P</I> < 0·001; Government physicians OR 0·24, <I>P</I> < 0·029). Better knowledge was associated with a lower likelihood of prescribing antibiotics for diarrhoea (OR 0·72, <I>P</I> < 0·001), cholera (OR 0·78, <I>P</I> = 0·027) and investigative procedure (OR 0·85, <I>P</I> = 0·028). In the slums of Kolkata, diarrhoea-related knowledge and practice were poor with the exception of qualified physicians, hence an improvement in the knowledge of pharmacists and unqualified practitioners is necessary for the overall improvement of diarrhoeal management in these slums.</P>

Novel low cost chemical texturing for very large area industrial multi-crystalline silicon solar cells

        Gangopadhyay, U,Dhungel, S K,Kim, K,Manna, U,Basu, P K,Kim, H J,Karunagaran, B,Lee, K S,Yoo, J S,Yi, J Institute of Physics 2005 Semiconductor science and technology Vol.20 No.9

<P>Multi-crystalline silicon surface etching without grain-boundary delineation is a challenging task for the fabrication of high efficiency solar cells. The use of sodium hydroxide–sodium hypochlorite (NaOH–NaOCl) solution for texturing a multi-crystalline silicon wafer surface in a solar cell fabrication line is reported in this paper. The optimized etching solution of NaOH–NaOCl does not have any effect on multi-crystalline silicon grain boundaries and it also has excellent isotropic etch characteristics, which ultimately helps to achieve higher values of performance parameters, especially the open circuit voltage (<I>V</I>oc) and fill factor (FF), than those in the case of conventional silicon texturing. Easy control over the reaction of the NaOH–NaOCl solution is also one of the major advantages due to which sophistication in controlling the temperature of the etching bath is not required for the industrial batch process. The FTIR analysis of the silicon surface after etching with the current approach shows the formation of Si–Cl bonds, which improves the quality of the diffused junction due to chlorine gettering during diffusion. We are the first to report 14–14.5% efficiency of very large area (150 mm ? 150 mm) multi-crystalline silicon solar cells using a NaOH–NaOCl texturing approach in an industrial production line with a yield greater than 95%.</P>

Influence of ion implantation on depth dependent phase transition in TiO2 films, anatase nanostructures and photo-absorption behavior

        Manna Ashis K.,Joshi Shalik R.,Satpati B.,Dash P.,Chattaraj Ananya,Srivastava S.K.,Kanjilal A.,Kanjilal D.,Varma Shikha 한국물리학회 2022 Current Applied Physics Vol.43 No.-

The present study explores the role of Ti ion implantation in structural phase transition in TiO2 thin films. Raman and TEM results reveal that after implantation Rutile phase in films increases at the expense of Anatase nanostructures. Though the as-deposited films display the presence of bigger anatase nanoparticles, after implantation, predominantly phonon confined smaller (~ 8 nm in size) anatase nanostructures are observed. GIXRD and Raman results further reflect presence of a critical fluence, 1 × 1013 ions/cm2, where the initial transformation from anatase to Rutile phase is observed. The role of Oxygen vacancies, in this transformation, has been explored here by XPS. Modifications in UV–Vis and Bandgap results show rich behavior which also reflects phase transformation at the critical fluence. Results further indicate that the phase transition gets first initiated deeper in the film and later on the surface. Interestingly, aggregation of larger Anatase nano-particles appears to be responsible for the structural transformation as observed here.

Endocytic Rab proteins are required for hepatitis C virus replication complex formation

        Manna, D.,Aligo, J.,Xu, C.,Park, W.S.,Koc, H.,Do Heo, W.,Konan, K.V. Academic Press 2010 Virology Vol.398 No.1

During infection, hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS4B protein remodels host membranes to form HCV replication complexes (RC) which appear as foci under fluorescence microscopy (FM). To understand the role of Rab proteins in forming NS4B foci, cells expressing the HCV replicon were examined biochemically and via FM. First, we show that an isolated NS4B-bound subcellular fraction is competent for HCV RNA synthesis. Further, this fraction is differentially enriched in Rab1, 2, 5, 6 and 7. However, when examined via FM, NS4B foci appear to be selectively associated with Rab5 and Rab7 proteins. Additionally, dominant negative (DN) Rab6 expression impairs Rab5 recruitment into NS4B foci. Further, silencing of Rab5 or Rab7 resulted in a significant decrease in HCV genome replication. Finally, expression of DN Rab5 or Rab7 led to a reticular NS4B subcellular distribution, suggesting that endocytic proteins Rab5 and Rab7, but not Rab11, may facilitate NS4B foci formation.

A high precision shear deformable element for free vibration of thick/thin composite trapezoidal plates

        S. Haldar,M. C. Manna 국제구조공학회 2003 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.3 No.3

A high precision shear deformable triangular element has been proposed for free vibration analysis of composite trapezoidal plates. The element has twelve nodes at the three sides and four nodes inside the element. Initially the element has fifty-five degrees of freedom, which has been reduced to forty-eight by eliminating the degrees of freedom of the internal nodes through static condensation. Plates having different side ratios (b/a), boundary conditions, thickness ratios (h/a=0.01, 0.1 and 0.2), number of layers and fibre angle orientations have been analyzed by the proposed shear locking free element. Trapezoidal laminate with concentrated mass at the centre has also been analyzed. An efficient mass lumping scheme has been recommended, where the effect of rotary inertia has been included. For validation of the present element and formulation few results of isotropic trapezoidal plate and square composite laminate have been compared with those obtained from open literatures. The numerical results for composite trapezoidal laminate have been given as new results.

A high precision shear flexible element for bending analysis of thick/thin triangular plate

        Haldar, S.,Das, P.,Manna, M.C. Techno-Press 2004 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.18 No.1

A high precision shear deformable triangular element has been proposed for bending analysis of triangular plate. The element has twelve nodes at the three sides and four nodes inside the element. Initially the element has thirty-five degrees of freedom, which has been reduced to thirty by eliminating the degrees of freedom of the internal nodes through static condensation. Plates having different boundary conditions, side ratios (b/a) and thickness ratios (h/a = 0.001, 0.1 and 0.2) have been analyzed using the proposed shear locking free element. Concentrated and uniformly distributed transverse loads have been used for the analysis. The formulation is made based on first order shear deformation theory. For validation of the present element and formulation few results of thin triangular plate have been compared with the analytical solutions. Results for thick plate have been presented as new results.
