<P>The mobility and electrochemical activity of nitrogen inside and/or at the surface of ionic compounds is of fundamental, as well as of possibly practical, relevance. In order to better understand the role of nitrogen anions in solid electrolytes, we measured the transference number of nitrogen in yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) by a concentration cell technique as a function of oxygen activity at different temperatures in the range of 1023 ≤<I>T</I>/<I>K</I>≤ 1123. YSZ doped with 1.9 wt% of N (YSZ:N) turned out to have an appreciable nitrogen transference number, which increased from 0 to 0.1 with decreasing oxygen activity in the range of −20 < log<I>a</I>O2 < −14. The stability of N in YSZ:N, however, has yet to be elucidated under oxidizing conditions.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Solid state electrochemistry with (di-)nitrogen? T-cell receptor γ alternate reading frame protein (TARP) is expressed by human prostate epithelial, prostate cancer, and mammary cancer cells, but is not found in normal mammary tissue. To date, this protein has only been described in humans. Additionally, no animal model has been established to investigate the potential merits of TARP as tumor marker or a target for adoptive tumor immunotherapy. In this study conducted to characterize feline T-cell receptor γ sequences, constructs very similar to human TARP transcripts were obtained by RACE from the spleen and prostate gland of cats. Transcription of TARP in normal, hyperplastic, and neoplastic feline mammary tissues was evaluated by conventional RT-PCR. In felines similarly to the situation reported in humans, a C-region encoding two open reading frames is spliced to a J-region gene. In contrast to humans, the feline J-region gene was found to be a pseudogene containing a deletion within its recombination signal sequence. Our findings demonstrated that the feline TARP ortholog is transcribed in the prostate gland and mammary tumors but not normal mammary tissues as is the case with human TARP.

A 8 months old, female domestic Shorthair cat with long-term signalment of anorexia, lacrimation, uveitis and coughing was submitted to the Pathology and Diagnosis Reference Division, NVRQS, Korea, for necropsy. Main gross lesions were characterized by ascities, some grayish-white nodular formation and fibrous adhesion on the surface of visceral organs including liver and kidney. Principle histopathological findings were fibrinous serositis, multifocal granuloma and necrosis, vasculitis, perivasculitis in various pharenchymal organs. Paraffin-embedded tissue sections taken from most of organs with granulomatous lesions were confirmed specific reaction to the monoclonal antibody of feline infectious peritonitis virus in the cytoplasm of many infiltrating macrophages by immunohistochemistry. The report was to describe the pathological lesions of the first naturally-occuring FIP case in companion cat of Korea.

Sleep deprivation disrupts the lacrimal system and induces dry eye disease

Sleep deficiency is a common public health problem associated with many diseases, such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. In this study, we established a sleep deprivation (SD) mouse model using a ‘stick over water’ method and observed the effect of sleep deficiency on ocular surface health. We found that SD decreased aqueous tear secretion; increased corneal epithelial cell defects, corneal sensitivity, and apoptosis; and induced squamous metaplasia of the corneal epithelium. These pathological changes mimic the typical features of dry eye. However, there was no obvious corneal inflammation and conjunctival goblet cell change after SD for 10 days. Meanwhile, lacrimal gland hypertrophy along with abnormal lipid metabolites, secretory proteins and free amino-acid profiles became apparent as the SD duration increased. Furthermore, the ocular surface changes induced by SD for 10 days were largely reversed after 14 days of rest. We conclude that SD compromises lacrimal system function and induces dry eye. These findings will benefit the clinical diagnosis and treatment of sleep-disorder-related ocular surface diseases.
