We have systematically investigated the effects of processing parameters, including various oxygen pressures (Po₂) ranging from 200 to 1000 mTorr and substrate temperatures (T_(s)) ranging from 500 to 750 ℃, on the characteristics of Bi-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Bi:YIG) films grown on (111) gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrates. Bi:YIG films were grown using a pulsed laser deposition method with an ArF excimer laser (λ=193 nm). Although the compositions of all the Bi:YIG films grown at the constant T_(s) of 600 ℃ were close to the target composition irrespective of Po₂, the Bi contents were slightly increased with increasing Po₂, which was consistent with the variation in Faraday rotation angles (θ_(F)). In addition, the crystallinity of the Bi:YIG films was deteriorated with increasing Po₂, and their grains became irregular. At T_(s) above 700 ℃, Bi-deficient yttrium iron garnet films were grown. Consequently, high quality epitaxial Bi:YIG films exhibiting Faraday rotation angles of -1.0 ~ -1.5 degree/㎛ were successfully grown at the substrate temperatures in the range of 500~650 ℃ when the Po2 of 200 mTorr was used.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>This paper reports changes in the cattle population and the incidence of bovine tuberculosis in the Republic of Korea between 1960 and 2007, and discusses potential factors contributing to the recently observed increase in disease incidence, particularly in beef cattle and deer. Although there have been ongoing refinements to the existing programme, further improvements in current strategies are needed, including surveillance of susceptible animal species, both domestic and wild, and ongoing surveillance of the human population.</P>

<P>Carborane-based host materials were prepared to fabricate deep blue phosphorescence organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs), which constituted three distinctive geometrical structures stemming from the corresponding three different isomeric forms of carboranes, namely, <I>ortho</I>-, <I>meta</I>-, and <I>para</I>-carboranes. These materials consist of two carbazolyl phenyl (CzPh) groups as photoactive units on each side of the carborane carbons to be bis[4-(<I>N</I>-carbazolyl)phenyl]carboranes, <B><I>o</I>-Cb</B>, <B><I>m</I>-Cb</B>, and <B><I>p</I>-Cb</B>. To elaborate on the role of the carboranes, comparative analogous benzene series (<B><I>o</I>-Bz</B>, <B><I>m</I>-Bz</B>, and <B><I>p</I>-Bz</B>) were prepared, and their photophysical properties were compared to show that advantageous photophysical properties were originated from the carborane structures: high triplet energy. Unlike <B><I>m</I>-Bz</B> and <B><I>p</I>-Bz</B>, carborane-based <B><I>m</I>-Cb</B> and <B><I>p</I>-Cb</B> showed an unconjugated nature between two CzPh units, which is essential for the blue phosphorescent materials. Also, the carborane hosts showed high glass transition temperatures (<I>T</I>g) of 132 and 164 °C for <B><I>m</I>-Cb</B> and <B><I>p</I>-Cb</B>, respectively. Albeit <B><I>p</I>-Cb</B> exhibited slightly lower hole mobility when compared to <B><I>p</I>-Bz</B>, it still lies at the high end hole mobility with a value of 1.1 × 10–3 cm2/(V s) at an electric field of 5 × 105 V/cm. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that triplet wave functions were effectively confined and mostly located at either side of the carbazolyl units for <B><I>m</I>-Cb</B> and <B><I>p</I>-Cb</B>. Low-temperature PL spectra indeed provided unequivocal data with higher triplet energy (<I>T</I>1) of 3.1 eV for both <B><I>m</I>-Cb</B> and <B><I>p</I>-Cb</B>. <B><I>p</I>-Cb</B> was successfully used as a host in deep blue PHOLEDs to provide a high external quantum efficiency of 15.3% and commission internationale de l’elcairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.15, 0.24).</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2012/jacsat.2012.134.issue-43/ja3066623/production/images/medium/ja-2012-066623_0009.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja3066623'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Wee-Haeng Hur,Jin-Han Kim,Hwa-Jung Kim,Sung-Hyun Kim,Seung-Gu Kang,Myounghai Kwak,Chang Hwan Bae,Sun-Nam Park 한국조류학회II 2015 한국조류학회지 Vol.22 No.1
This study was carried out to secure basic data for a plan to reduce bird strikes by analysing information on collisions and bird species. We received 63 unidentified bird strike samples―for example, feathers, blood and tissue―from 8 airports in Korea from August 2009 to December 2010. We considered a bird strike sample as a case of bird strike, and used information on bird species that was identified by using DNA COI segments from the samples. Information was used on collisions from reports of bird strikes from airports and additional information collected from websites of KAC. From the results, 15 bird strikes occurred in Jeju airport and 8 bird strikes occurred in Gimpo airport. The occurrence of bird strikes was related to the number of aircraft movements in airports. However, we could not confirm the major bird strike species in each airport and also could not find the trend of the relation between the size of aircraft and occurrence of bird strikes. More bird strikes occurred during landing than takeoffs and engines made up the highest proportion of bird strikes. Seasonally, the occurrence of bird strikes was higher in October, September, November and May than in other months. This trend seems related to the patterns of the seasonal migration of birds. The daily pattern of bird strikes was higher in the morning and at sunset than at other times, and nocturnal birds were also struck at night time. This trend seems related to the daily patterns of birds.

Background: The Guideline Working Group of the Korean Society for Neuro-Oncology (KSNO) conducted a nationwide questionnaire survey for diverse queries faced in the treatment of brain tumors. As part I of the survey, the aim of this study is to evaluate national patterns of clinical practice about antiepileptic drug (AED) and steroid usage for management of brain tumors. Methods: A web-based survey was sent to all members of the KSNO by email. The survey included 9 questions of AED usage and 5 questions of steroid usage for brain tumor patients. All questions were developed by consensus of the Guideline Working Group. Results: The overall response rate was 12.8% (54/423). Regarding AED usage, the majority of respondents (95.2%) routinely prescribed prophylactic AEDs for patients with seizure at the peri/postoperative period. However, as many as 72.8% of respondents prescribed AED routinely for seizure-naive patients, and others prescribed AED as the case may be. The duration of AED prophylaxis showed wide variance according to the epilepsy status and the location of tumor. Levetiracetam (82.9%) was the most preferred AED for epilepsy prophylaxis. Regarding steroid usage, 90.5% of respondents use steroids in perioperative period, including 34.2% of them as a routine manner. Presence of peritumoral edema (90.9%) was considered as the most important factor determining steroid usage followed by degree of clinical symptoms (60.6%). More than half of respondents (51.2%) replied to discontinue the steroids within a week after surgery if there are no specific medical conditions, while 7.3% preferred slow tapering up to a month after surgery. Conclusion: The survey demonstrated the prevailing practice patterns on AED and steroid usage in neuro-oncologic field among members of the KSNO. This information provides a point of reference for establishing a practical guideline in the management of brain tumor patients.
