        Subfertility in Males: An Important Cause of Bull Disposal in Bovines

        The study had two objectives, namely, to estimate the andrological disorders leading to disposal of Karan Fries (KF), Sahiwal cattle and Murrah buffalo bulls and to study the effect of various factors (species/breeds, season of birth and period of birth) on male reproductive parameters. Records on occurrence of subfertility problems and disposal pattern of bulls maintained at the National Dairy Research Institute herd were collected for 15 years (1991 to 2005). Percentage of bulls producing freezable semen was less in the crossbred cattle (58.46%) as compared to Sahiwal (81.69%) and Murrah bulls (81.05%). Various subfertility traits like poor libido and unacceptable seminal profile were found to be the significant reasons (p<0.01) for culling of the breeding bulls. Inadequate sex drive was the main contributing factor for bull disposal in Sahiwal (22.55%) and Murrah bulls (15.12%) whereas poor semen quality and freezability were most frequently observed in KF bulls (24.29 and 7.29 percent, respectively). Least squares analyses of different male reproductive parameters showed that species/breeds had significant effect (p<0.05) on all traits except for frozen semen production periods (FSPP). Periods of birth were significantly different (p<0.05) for all traits except for semen volume. Age at first semen collection (AFSC), age at first semen freezing (AFSF) and age at disposal (AD) were highest in Murrah, while frozen semen production period (FSPP) and semen production period (SPP) were highest in KF and lowest in Sahiwal. The age at first semen donation and breeding period could be reduced by introducing the bulls to training at an early age. These results revealed a declining trend in AFSC, AFSF, FSPP, SPP and AD, thereby indicating an improvement in reproductive performance over the years. The age at first semen donation in bovines can be reduced by introducing the young male calves to training at an early age, which could increase the dosage of semen obtained from each male.

        Dasatinib treatment of chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia: analysis of responses according to preexisting BCR-ABL mutations

        <B>Abstract</B><P>Dasatinib is a BCR-ABL inhibitor with 325-fold higher potency than imatinib against unmutated BCR-ABL in vitro. Imatinib failure is commonly caused by BCR-ABL mutations. Here, dasatinib efficacy was analyzed in patients recruited to phase 2/3 trials with chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia with or without BCR-ABL mutations after prior imatinib. Among 1043 patients, 39% had a preexisting BCR-ABL mutation, including 48% of 805 patients with imatinib resistance or suboptimal response. Sixty-threedifferent BCR-ABL mutations affecting 49 amino acids were detected at baseline, with G250, M351, M244, and F359 most frequently affected. After 2 years of follow-up, dasatinib treatment of imatinib-resistant patients with or without a mutation resulted in notable response rates (complete cytogenetic response: 43% vs 47%) and durable progression-free survival (70% vs 80%). High response rates were achieved with different mutations except T315I, including highly imatinib-resistant mutations in the P-loop region. Impaired responses were observed with some mutations with a dasatinib median inhibitory concentration (IC50) greater than 3nM; among patients with mutations with lower or unknown IC50, efficacy was comparable with those with no mutation. Overall, dasatinib has durable efficacy in patients with or without BCR-ABL mutations. All trials were registered at http://www.clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00123474, NCT00101660, and NCT00103844.</P>

        A Note on Strongly Euclidean Semiring

        Structure of ideals in an Euclidean semiring has been studied by Dale L. and Hanson D. L. [1] (1977). Mukhopadhyay in his paper [4] (1999) raised the question "Is every Euclidean semiring a principal k-ideal semiring ?" An answer to this question in the case of inversive semirings is provided in the present paper.

        Performance of an OFF-Board Test Rig for an Automotive Air Conditioning System

        An o®-board test bench has been developed for evaluating the performance of an automotive air conditioning system. The facility consists of the mechanical hardware used in an automobile along with a large number of additional sensors and a standalone control system that mimics the operations in a car. The performance of the individual components and the system has been investigated for two major independent variables of running automobiles, namely the compressor speed and the speed of the evaporator fan. Correlations for the volumetric e±ciency of the compressor and COP of the system have been developed. While the refrigerant °ow rate is in°uenced mainly by compressor speed, the COP depends on both the operating variables. The investigation also establishes that the design of the rig, the selection and placement of the sensors and the method of measurement are suitable for its further deployment under dynamic condition and for fault diagnosis.

        Compact and small size, reliable and fail­safe operation and low cost featuring fault current limiter causing the designer to take a close look into the use of passive fault current limiter(FCL) for the protection of power semiconductor devices in power electronic systems. This paper has identified the main parameters responsible for the development of ideal passive magnetic current limiter. The effect of those parameters on the range of operation and the voltage-current characteristics of the magnetic current limiler has been studied using tableau approach Desirable characteristics are discussed and the simulation results are presented.

        Rate parameter estimation for 4-chlorophenol degradation by UV and organic oxidants

        The main objective of this study was to evaluate the rate parameters of degradation/mineralization of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) using organic oxidants, viz., peroxy acetic acid (PAA), para nitro benzoic acid (PNBA),and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP), in basic media, in combination with UV irradiation at 254 nm. All the experiments were conducted with varying time intervals, under identical conditions of UV irradiation and pH. The reactions were followed by HPLC analysis for residual concentration and GC–MS for mineralization, and intermediates/product identification. In the present investigation, the residual concentration data of 4-CP against time were analyzed for reaction order determination by differential and integral methods. The differential method yielded fractional order of reaction for all organic oxidants under consideration. Initially the profile was observed to be linear in the time span of 0–45 s for all the organic oxidants used and thus, first-order approximation was applied. The curvilinear path, which followed up till 300 s, was approximated to first-order and second-order kinetics. No noteworthy results were observed for pseudo-first order rate equation. The change in the nature of the curves was attributed to the formation of intermediates/reaction products.

        Hot Isostatic Pressing of Nanostructured γ - TiAl Powders

        A study of the hot isostatic pressing (HIP'ing) of γ-TiAl powders produced by mechanical alloying, has demonstrated that full density can be achieved 400℃ or more below the temperature required for conventional powder; that is 725℃ or below. Nanostructured grains (≤100 ㎚) are observed after HIP'ing up to 850℃.

        Dregea volubilis (L. f.) Benth. (Asclepiadaceae): an appraisal on pharmacognostic, phytochemical and pharmacological studies

        Since the time immemorial, medicinal plants and herbal medicines have always presented to us a wide range of curative techniques that has paved our way towards modernised medical resources. The present article reviews on one of such medicinal plants, scientifically recognised to be Dregea volubilis (L. f.) Benth. belonging to the family Asclepiadaceae. Literature survey was carried out by using Google, Scholar Google, Scopus and Pub-Med. The scientific journal articles found on the internet for last two decades were considered and pharmacognostic, phytochemical and pharmacological studies on Dregea volubilis have been compiled. Almost every part of this plant has been phytochemically screened along with profound pharmacological studies especially on its leaves and fruits that have revealed immense scope for this plant to be applied to advanced drug development studies pertaining to a wide range of disorders. The present review article collates the published researches carried out globally exploring the possible therapeutic potentialities of Dregea volubilis. Relevant research in this field could lead to development of a potentially useful therapeutic agent from this plant.
