Using a mutant of Mycobacterium smegmatis lacking the major aa3 cytochrome c oxidase of the electron transport chain (Δaa3), we demonstrated that inhibition of the respiratory electron transport chain led to an increase in antibiotic resistance of M. smegmatis to isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, and tetracycline. The alternative sigma factors SigB and SigE were shown to be involved in an increase in rifampicin resistance of M. smegmatis induced under respiration-inhibitory conditions. As in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, SigE and SigB form a hierarchical regulatory pathway in M. smegmatis through SigE-dependent transcription of sigB. Expression of sigB and sigE was demonstrated to increase in the Δaa3 mutant, leading to upregulation of the SigB-dependent genes in the mutant. The phoU2 (MSMEG_1605) gene implicated in a phosphatesignaling pathway and the MSMEG_1097 gene encoding a putative glycosyltransferase were identified to be involved in the SigB-dependent enhancement of rifampicin resistance observed for the Δaa3 mutant of M. smegmatis. The significance of this study is that the direct link between the functionality of the respiratory electron transport chain and antibiotic resistance in mycobacteria was demonstrated for the first time using an electron transport chain mutant rather than inhibitors of electron transport chain.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the causative agent of tuberculosis. M. tuberculosis can survive in a dormant state within the granuloma, avoiding the host-mounting immune attack. M. tuberculosis bacilli in this state show increased tolerance to antibiotics and stress conditions, and thus the transition of M. tuberculosis to the nonreplicating dormant state acts as an obstacle to tuberculosis treatment. M. tuberculosis in the granuloma encounters hostile environments such as hypoxia, nitric oxide, reactive oxygen species, low pH, and nutrient deprivation, etc., which are expected to inhibit respiration of M. tuberculosis. To adapt to and survive in respiration-inhibitory conditions, it is required for M. tuberculosis to reprogram its metabolism and physiology. In order to get clues to the mechanism underlying the entry of M. tuberculosis to the dormant state, it is important to understand the mycobacterial regulatory systems that are involved in the regulation of gene expression in response to respiration inhibition. In this review, we briefly summarize the information regarding the regulatory systems implicated in upregulation of gene expression in mycobacteria exposed to respiration-inhibitory conditions. The regulatory systems covered in this review encompass the DosSR (DevSR) two-component system, SigF partner switching system, MprBA-SigE-SigB signaling pathway, cAMP receptor protein, and stringent response.

<B>Abstract</B><P><I>n</I>-3 PUFA such as EPA and DHA as well as oestrogen have been reported to decrease blood levels of cholesterol, but their underlying mechanism is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the combination of <I>n</I>-3 PUFA supplementation and oestrogen injection on hepatic cholesterol metabolism. Rats were fed a modified AIN-93G diet with 0, 1 or 2 % <I>n</I>-3 PUFA (EPA+DHA) relative to the total energy intake for 12 weeks. Rats were surgically ovariectomised at week 8, and, after 1-week recovery, rats were injected with 17<I>β</I>-oestradiol-3-benzoate (E2) or maize oil for the last 3 weeks. Supplementation with <I>n</I>-3 PUFA and E2 injection significantly increased the ratio of the hepatic expression of phosphorylated AMP activated protein kinase (p-AMPK):AMP activated protein kinase (AMPK) and decreased sterol regulatory element-binding protein-2, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9. Supplementation with <I>n</I>-3 PUFA increased hepatic expression of cholesterol 7<I>α</I>-hydroxylase (CYP7A1), sterol 12<I>α</I>-hydroxylase (CYP8B1) and sterol 27-hydroxylase (CYP27A1); however, E2 injection decreased CYP7A1 and CYP8B1 but not CYP27A1. Additionally, E2 injection increased hepatic expression of oestrogen receptor-<I>α</I> and <I>β</I>. In conclusion, <I>n</I>-3 PUFA supplementation and E2 injection had synergic hypocholesterolaemic effects by down-regulating hepatic cholesterol synthesis (<I>n</I>-3 PUFA and oestrogen) and up-regulating bile acid synthesis (<I>n</I>-3 PUFA) in ovariectomised rats.</P>

Surface dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD), which is widely used to control turbulence in aerodynamics, has a significant effect on the radar cross-section (RCS). A four-way linearly synthesized SDBD air plasma actuator is designed to bolster the plasma effects on electromagnetic waves. The diffraction angle is calculated to predict the RCS because of the periodic structure of staggered electrodes. The simplified plasma modeling is utilized to calculate the inhomogeneous surface plasma distribution. Monostatic RCS shows the diffraction in the plane perpendicular to the electrode array and the notable distortion by plasma. In comparison, the overall pattern is maintained in the parallel plane with minor plasma effects. The trends also appear in the bistatic RCS, which has a significant difference in the observation plane perpendicular to the electrodes. The peaks by Bragg’s diffraction are shown, and the RCS is reduced by 10 dB in a certain range by the plasma effect. The diffraction caused by the actuator and the inhomogeneous air plasma should be considered in designing an SDBD actuator for a wide range of application.

Three strains, YP416<sup>T</sup>, YP421<sup>T</sup>, and Y422, were isolated from soil samples in Pocheon City, Gyeonggi province, South Korea. The strains belong to two novel yeast species in the genus Mrakia. Molecular phylogenetic analysis showed that the strain YP416<sup>T</sup> was closely related to Mrakia niccombsii. Still, it differed by 9 nucleotide substitutions with no gap (1.51%) in the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene and 14 nucleotide substitutions with 7 gaps (2.36%) in the ITS region. The strain YP421<sup>T</sup> differed from the type strain of the most closely related species, Mrakia aquatica, by 5 nucleotide substitutions with no gap (0.81%) in the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene and 9 nucleotide substitutions with one gap (1.43%) in the ITS region. The names Mrakia terrae sp. nov. and Mrakia soli sp. nov. are proposed, with type strains YP416<sup>T</sup> (KCTC 27886<sup>T</sup>) and YP421<sup>T</sup> (KCTC 27890<sup>T</sup>), respectively. MycoBank numbers of the strains YP416<sup>T</sup> and YP421<sup>T</sup> are MB 836844 and MB 836847, respectively.

최근 스마트폰 사용이 빠른 속도로 늘어나고 있다. 사용자의 연령층도 다양해지고 애플리케이션의 종류와 범위도 확장되고 있다. 가계부 애플리케이션은 초창기부터 꾸준히 개발되어 왔지만 아직 부족한 면이 많다. 기본적인 소비 패턴 분석과 그래프를 통한 피드백은 대부분의 가계부 애플리케이션이 제공하고 있으나 한계가 있다. 또한 모든 연령층에 대한 고려는 찾아보기 힘들다. 본 논문은 현 가계부 애플리케이션이 갖추지 못한 기능인 음성 인식 입력 지출 유형 분석 및 개선방향 제시 PDF 파일 생성을 통한 스마트폰과 PC간의 상호작용을 중점으로 기반 기술에 대해 서술한다. 개발된 애플리케이션은 사용하기 쉬운 UI와 위젯을 통하여 사용자의 편의를 제공한다.
유체 모델을 이용한 유전체 장벽 방전 플라즈마와 전자기파 간의 시간 의존적 상호 작용 분석

전자기파와 플라즈마의 상호 작용을 결정하는 주요 변수는 플라즈마 주파수와 충돌 주파수이며, 이 둘은 각각 전자 밀도와 전자 온도로부터 계산할 수 있다. 이 두 값은 플라즈마 발생기 종류에 따라 결정되는 시간 의존적인 변수이다. 기존의 전파 흡수 특성 연구에서는 수치 해석적 모형의 부재로 인하여 플라즈마의 시간적/ 공간적 변화를 간략화하거나, 상수로 가정하여 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 플라즈마 유체 모델을 도입하여 얻어진 시간 의존적 변수 값을 전자기파 감쇠량 계산에 이용함으로써 해석의 정확도를 높이는 방식을 제안하였다. 해석 대상인 유전체 장벽 방전 플라즈마는 구조적인 단순함으로 인하여 1차원 분석만으로 플라즈마 분포의 시간적 변화를 반영할 수 있다. 본 논문은 한 주기 내에서 전자 밀도와 전자 온도를 추출하여 마이크로파 입사 시 시간적 흡수 특성 변화를 분석하였다. 또한, 전자 밀도와 전자 온도의 변화에 따라 감쇠량을 계산하여 감쇠 경향성을 분석하였다. In determining interaction between plasma and electromagnetic wave, plasma frequency and collision frequency are two key parameters. They are derived from electron density and temperature, which vary in an extremely wide range, depending on a plasma generator. Because the parameters are usually unknown, traditional researches have utilized simplified electron density model and constant electron temperature approximation. Introduction of plasma fluid model to electromagnetics is suggested to utilize relatively precise time dependent variables for given generator. Dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) generator is selected due to its simple geometry which allows us to use one dimensional analysis. Time dependent property is analyzed when microwave is launched toward parallel plate DBD plasma. Afterwards, attenuation tendency with the change of electron density and temperature is demonstrated.
