Boron isotopic separation was investigated experimentally and theoretically on boron-specific adsorbent, namely pyrocatechol-modified resin (CL-RESIN). The static adsorption results with initial boron concentration of 8.648 g L−1 at 25 °C were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Henry isotherm model, from which relevant parameters were used for subsequent isotopic separation simulation by Aspen Chromatograph. The maximum static boron isotopic separation factor with CL-RESIN was 1.13 at 25 °C, thus adsorption-based boron isotopic separation in a chromatographic column packing with CL-RESIN was further studied by experiments and simulations. 11B had greater affinity with CL-RESIN in concentrated boric acid solution with dynamic boron isotopic separation factor of 1.15 and enriched 10B was collected in effluent. Simulation of boron isotopic separation was completed, and simulated results were in good agreement with experimental breakthrough curves under the same conditions. Furthermore, the dynamic behaviors of boron isotopic separation were predicted by simulation under different operating conditions. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to determine optimized operating conditions in a chromatographic column. Consequently, the optimized operating conditions were achieved with flow rate of 1.24 mL min−1, 44 cm column length, 0.46 cm column diameter and feed concentration of 8.648 g L−1.

Edible bird's nest (EBN) is a traditional food which was nourishing and functional. Particularly, there is the epidermal growth factor (EGF) in EBN, which is thought to play an important role in promoting skin repair. However, the type and content of EGF in EBN were not determined yet. In this study, the type of EGF in EBN was identified as bird EGF by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and this method was validated to be accurate and precise. Moreover, it was found that the content of EGF in raw-unclean EBN, raw-clean EBN and stewed EBN was 3000 pg/g–4000 pg/g and there were no significant differences, which suggested that the batches, origins, forms, stewing temperatures and stewing times of EBN had no effect on the content of EGF in EBN. However, it was due to that enzyme destroyed the primary structure of EGF, the EGF content of neutral protease and trypsin hydrolysates of EBN was lower than that of flavor enzymes, alkaline protease and pepsin hydrolysates of EGF. This study was the first to determine the type and content of EGF in EBN, and provided a theoretical basis for the selection and processing of EBN and using EBN as a source of EGF.

<P><I>Eucommia ulmoides</I> leaves have been used as a functional food and drink in China. The purpose of this study was to identify the bioactive constituents with soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) inhibitory activity and anti-inflammatory properties. Twenty-seven known compounds (<B>1</B>–<B>27</B>) were isolated from the leaves of <I>E. ulmoides</I> Oliver, and their structures were identified by NMR and ESIMS analysis; three of these, 2,5-dimethoxy-3-glucopyranosyl cinnamic alcohol (<B>11</B>), foliasalacioside E2 (<B>26</B>), and icariside F2 (<B>27</B>), were obtained from this plant for the first time. Compounds <B>1</B>–<B>7</B> exhibited soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) inhibitory activity at 100 μM; among them, quercetin (<B>1</B>) and kaempferol (<B>5</B>) displayed potential activities with IC50 values of 22.5 ± 0.9 and 31.3 ± 2.6 μM, respectively, with noncompetitive inhibition mode. Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) inhibitory activity of the isolated compounds was evaluated by the NF-κB liciferase assay in HepG2 cells. Compounds <B>1</B>, <B>9</B>, <B>20</B>, and <B>27</B> displayed potent NF-κB inhibitory effects, with IC50 values of 15.14 ± 2.29, 15.23 ± 2.34, 16.88 ± 2.17, and 16.25 ± 2.19 μM, respectively, whereas other compounds showed weak inhibition of NF-κB transcriptional activity ranging from 17.54 to 92.6 μM. A structure–activity relationship of flavonoids <B>1</B>–<B>9</B> was also discussed. The results obtained in this work might contribute to the understanding of pharmacological activities of <I>E. ulmoides</I> leaves and further investigation on its potential application values for food and drug.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jafcau/2015/jafcau.2015.63.issue-8/acs.jafc.5b00055/production/images/medium/jf-2015-00055j_0004.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/jf5b00055'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Pheochromocytoma is originated from chromaffin cells of sympathetic nervous system and clinical symptoms are caused by catecholamine released from tumor. In typical cases, periodic attacks of hypertension, palpitation, headache, and sweating are main symptoms. But, the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma is sometimes difficult since its clinical presentation is quite variable. We evaluated a 25-year-old woman who was admitted because of left flank pain and seizure. She had a history of hemoptysis and toxemia. During the hospitalization, she experienced generalized seizure once more. The clinical diagnosis of pheochromocytoma was proven by highly elevated urinary catecholamines and confirmed histologically after operation. We think it is the first case report of pheochromocytoma manifested by seizure in Korea, so we report this case with literature review (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 15:622-626, 2000).

Purpose: Gastric cancer is a highly metastatic malignant tumor, often characterized by chemoresistance and high mortality. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the role of B-cell lymphoma 3 (Bcl-3) protein on cell migration and chemosensitivity of gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: The gastric cancer cell lines, AGS and NCI-N87, were used for the in vitro studies and the in vivo studies were performed using BALB/c nude mice. Western blotting, wound healing assay, Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, immunohistochemistry, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay were used to evaluate the role of Bcl-3 in gastric cancer. Results: We found that the protein expression of hypoxia (HYP)-inducible factor-1α and Bcl-3 were markedly upregulated under hypoxic conditions in both AGS and NCI-N87 cells in a time-dependent manner. Interestingly, small interfering RNA-mediated knockdown of Bcl-3 expression affected the migration and chemosensitivity of the gastric cancer cells. AGS and NCI-N87 cells transfected with si-RNA-Bcl-3 (si-Bcl-3) showed significantly reduced migratory ability and increased chemosensitivity to oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil, and irinotecan. In addition, si-Bcl-3 restored the autophagy induced by HYP. Further, the protective role of si-Bcl-3 on the gastric cancer cells could be reversed by the autophagy inducer, rapamycin. Importantly, the in vivo xenograft tumor experiments showed similar results. Conclusions: Our present study reveals that Bcl-3 knockdown inhibits cell migration and chemoresistance of gastric cancer cells through restoring HYP-induced autophagy.

Nuclease p1 is an important enzyme in the nucleotide industry that is used to hydrolyze nucleic acid into nucleotides. To improve enzyme activity, Penicillium citrinum, a nuclease p1 producing strain, was mutated by lowenergy Nitrogen ion beam implantation at an energy level of 15 keV and a dose ranging from 1×10^(15)-1×10^(16) ions/cm^2. The mutant strain designated as N409 was obtained with a high yield of nuclease p1. The activity of nuclease p1 was 421 U/mL from the mutant strain N409, which was increased by 86% compared with the control. The fermentation kinetics of nuclease p1 by the mutant strain N409 was studied in a 30 L external airlifting bioreactor. A model was proposed using the logistic equation for microbial growth, the Luedeking-Piret equation for product formation and a Luedeking-Piret-like equation for substrate uptake. The results predicted from the model were in good agreement with the experimental observations.
