        포스트모더니즘과 탈식민주의의 접경선에 선 문학텍스트 읽기 : J. M. 쿳시의 소설들을 중심으로

        This paper is about ‘re-writing’ of J. M. Coetzee, a white South-African writer. His novels almost were what are re-written through the great novels past. A fundamental theme in Coetzee's novels involves the values and conduct resulting from South Africa's apartheid system, which, in his view, could arise anywhere. And his novels are also well-crafted composition, pregnant dialogue and analytical brilliance of Mr. Coetzee's novels. But at the same time, they are said to be ‘a scrupulous doubter, ruthless in his criticism of the cruel rationalism and cosmetic morality of Western civilization.’ Besides it is in exploring weakness and defeat that Coetzee captures the divine spark in man. The main point of his novels turns an existentialist spotlight on individual behavior. At the decisive moment Coetzee's characters stand behind themselves, who are motionless, and incapable of taking part in their own actions. But the passivity is not merely the dark haze that devours personality; it is also the last resort open to human beings as they defy an oppressive order by rendering themselves inaccessible to its intentions. As it shows in this complexity of his novels, his re-writing works are the trying of crossing in the border between ‘Colonialism’ and ‘Postcolonialism’, ‘Modernism’ and ‘Postmodernism’ and ‘here’ and ‘there’. Through that, his novels of anti-realism also tell us the real stories and situations of South-Africa.

        공학 전공 대학원생의 영어 학술 논문 작성 실태 연구

        본 연구는 공학 전공 대학원생들의 영어 학술 논문 작성에 관한 실태 알아보기 위하여 서울시 소재 5개 대학의 공학 전공 대학원생 101명을 대상으로 설문조사를 통해 영어 사용 상황과 전공 ESP 수업의 경험과 효과, 그리고 영어 논문 작성 현황을 알아보았다. 분석 결과 공학 전공 대학원생들의 영어 자가 평가에서는 쓰기와 문법, 어휘, 말하기 영역들은 부족한 것으로 나타났다. 구체적인 영어 사용 상황에서는 읽기를 제외한 말하기, 듣기, 쓰기, 어휘 영역에서 어려움이 있었다. 또한 수강했던 전공 ESP 수업은 현재 영어 논문 작성에 많이 도움은 되지 않았으며 학생들이 선호하는 전공 영어 수업 유형은 교수의 강의와 개인 지도로 나타났다. 영어 학술 논문 작성 현황으로는 응답자들의 영어 학술 논문 투고 경험은 적었고 영어 논문 작성이 한글 논문 작성보다 2배 이상 힘든 것으로 나타났다. 영어 논문 작성에는 지도교수의 도움이 가장 많았으며 문장간의 논리적인 연결에 가장 많은 지도를 받았다. 또한 영어 논문 쓰기에서 가장 중요한 부분과 가장 어려 운 부분도 모두 문장 간의 논리적 연결로 나타났다. 이와 함께 응답자들은 논문 작성에서 문법과 어휘 사용의 어려움도 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 공학 전공 대학원생들을 위한 영어 학술 논문 작성 ESP 프로그램 개발의 기초 자료로 사용될 수 있을 것이다. This study investigated the current state of academic English journal writing by graduate engineering students. The data were collected from a survey of 101 graduate students in engineering from five universities located in Seoul. The survey inquired about the participants’ current state of English usage, their experiences with ESP courses, and their current state and difficulties with using academic English for journal writing. The results revealed that the participants had difficulties in areas of speaking, writing, listening, and vocabulary when using English in their academic contexts. Moreover, their previous experiences with ESP courses were not helpful in writing academic English. Also, they preferred an ESP class with personal assistance. In terms of publishing academic papers, they required more than twice the amount of effort to write in English as in Korean. The results also showed that logical connections in paragraph development were the most difficult and important feature in English journal writing. In addition, the students needed support in both grammar and vocabulary. Suggestions for further research and pedagogical implications are provided.

        국내 제2언어 환경에서 다독의 효과: 메타분석

        Research on extensive reading shows that extensive reading in L2 settings produces positive impacts on reading abilities and other areas of L2 learning. This meta-analysis aims to show how effective extensive reading is on L2 learning. In addition, this study examines what variables moderate the effectiveness of extensive reading (i.e., language skills, length of extensive reading treatment, age, and proficiency). A total of 55 studies were retrieved from the comprehensive literature search all of which were coded for the effects of extensive reading and moderating variables. Results from the meta-analysis indicate that extensive reading has overall a medium effect(g = .67). The effectiveness of extensive reading was also found to be moderated by language skills, length of extensive reading treatment, age, and proficiency. Methodological and pedagogical implications are discussed.

        영어 학습자들의 온라인 기반 영어 쓰기 자동 피드백 프로그램 사용에 대한 인식 및 학습 전략 연구

        This study explored how English learners perceive an automated feedback program, Grammarly. and how they use it for their English learning. A total of fifty-seven university students participated in the study. They were asked to report their reflections on corrective feedback on their English compositions provided by Grammarly and their strategies of using the program for their English learning. The students reported grammar errors, vocabulary errors, and punctuation errors. It was found that Grammarly was useful for checking grammar. Furthermore, they suggested a variety of English learning strategies using an automated feedback program for their English learning. Pedagogical implications are discussed based on the results.

      • TRNG Testing Scheme using Approximate Periods based on Relative Hamming Distance

        Random numbers are widely used in many kinds of areas, especially in cryptography. In 2001, NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) released statistical test suite for random and pseudorandom number generators for cryptographic applications. We had examined whether the test suite of NIST is also suitable for true random number generators and recommended additional testing scheme for true random number generators. We propose a new testing scheme for true random number generators using approximate periods based on hamming distance function. Our experimental results show that edit distance function is required to testify pseudorandom and true random number generators.

        Conceptual Design of Cable-Stayed Bridges using Graphic Simulation

        The paradigm for structural design has been shifted from traditional engineering-oriented tomore comprehensive holistic designs that consider visual aspects. Such trends need anintegrated strategy to design a structure that follows force flow resulting in a pleasing visualappearance. Graphic statics is perfect for designing structural forms while visualizing structuralbehavior. Despite the advantages of graphic statics, there are limitations to its use manually inconceptual design, where various design alternatives must be created and compared. Theobjective of this study is to present the conceptual design of cable-stayed bridges by exploitingthe novelty of graphic statics. It also focuses on the rapid prototyping of computer-supporteddesign to overcome the problem of tedious and iterative manual tasks. The generation of formand force diagrams for some representative cable-stayed bridges is first discussed. This is forparametric modeling to generate structural forms with genetic information and to develop intoa family of design alternatives by varying the values for predefined input parameters. Then, theinformation and tasks involved in the development of the form and force diagrams areformalized by using the concept of entity-based model for the computer-supported graphicsimulation. The formalized entities are further implemented into the generative algorithms ofgraphics software that link form and force diagrams through dynamic binding. It is expectedthat the implemented design tool support designers to perform conceptual design iterativelyand interactively by considering structural behaviour and visual silhouette in a balanced way.

      • Fine mapping of a chromosomal region controlling leaflet shape and number of seed produced per pod in soybean

        Most soybean cultivars have ovate leaflets, although a few cultivars have narrow or lanceolate leaflets. Narrow leaflet cultivars tend to have more seeds produced per pod than ovate leaflet cultivars, suggesting that the narrow leaflet trait is tightly linked to or cosegregating with the trait controlling number of seeds produced per pod (nspp). The objective of this study was to construct a high resolution map of a chromosomal region controlling narrow leaflet trait and nspp in soybean. A BC3F2 population from a cross between 'Sowonkong' and 'V94-5152' was used. Sowonkong have narrow leaflet and 4-seeded pod and V94-5152 have ovate leaflet and do not have 4-seeded pod. The plants of F2 populations showed a segregation ratio of 3:1 of ovate leaflet to narrow leaflet and then leaflet genotypes were obtained from F2:3 population of each F2 individual. The narrow leaflet-containing plants showed Sowonkong-like pod trait and the ovate leaflet-containing plants V94-5152-like pod trait. The results suggested that, in our mapping population, a single gene controls inheritance of the narrow leaflet character and the narrow leaflet trait is tightly linked to or co-segregating with the trait controlling nspp. Subsequently, we mapped the narrow leaflet locus near Sat_105, Satt270 and SM315 on soybean linkage group I that corresponds with the previously known ln locus. Work is ongoing to construct a fine molecular genetic linkage map on this MLG I region and to find a linkage relationship between ln and nspp. Our results should facilitate further elucidation for the relationship between ln/nspp and yield.
