To better understand the precise physiologic functions of TGF- β1 in odontogenesis, we have performed a detailed analysis of developing and adult dentition in mice with a targeted deletion of the TGF-β 1 gene. TGF-β1(-/-) mice derived from TGF- β1(+/-) matings receive maternally transferred TGF-β1, but die by three weeks of age from multifocal inflammation (Shull et al., 1992; Kulkarni et al., 1993). In these mice and neonates from a TGF-β1(-/-) female that did not receive maternal TGF-β1, the earlier stages of odontogenesis appeared unaltered. Furthermore, the absence of TGF-β1 did not affect the patterns and levels of expression of related isoforms TGF-β2 and TGF-β3, as shown by in-situ hybridization and competitive RT-PCR analyses. However, histopathologic analysis of adult dentition in TGF-β1(-/-)mice, whose survival was prolonged with dexamethasone, showed extensive pathlolgy in dental and paradental tissues. In addition to inflammation, we observed a marked attrition of tooth matrices in TGF-β1(-/-) molars when compared to TGF-β1(+/+) and TGF-β1(+/-) littermates. To determine whether the phenotypic changes in teeth are primarily caused by the deficiency in TGF-β1 rather than the secondary effects of inflammation, we studied dentition in TGF-β1(-/-) mice backcrossed onto immunodeficient backgrounds using histochemical, radiographic and biomechanical methods. These analyses revealed significant differences in mineral content and hardness quality in TGF-β1(-/-) molars as compared to their control littermates, implying that the impairment in formation of dental mineralized tissues is linked directly to the absence of TGF-β1. Our findings hence demonstrate the importance of TGF-β1 in cellular functions at advanced stages of odontogenesis, in particular, the biomineralization of tooth matrices. In addition these studies indicate a non-redundant, isoform-specific role of TGF-β1 in the immune homeostasis of oral tissues.

The universal current reversal method is used for the simultaneous measurement of response time (${\tau}$), azimuthal angle (${\varphi}_o$), spontaneous polarization ($P_S$), and rotational viscosity (${\gamma}_{\varphi}$) of two ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs). The application of AC field in FLCs results in reorientational current, which is further analyzed to obtain various parameters. The variation in the parameters with temperature follows the typical trend predicted by the theory. The theoretical curve fits well into the experimental data. Its comparison with traditional current reversal method is confirmed to address certain limitations of that method.

$^{18}F$-Fluorocholine (FCH) PET/CT is evolving as a functional imaging modality for the preoperative imaging of abnormal parathyroid tissue(s) helping to localize eutopic and ectopic parathyroid tissue and limit the extent of surgery. FCH PET/CT may show incidental uptake in various thyroid lesions necessitating further evaluation, whereas the role of $^{18}F$-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT in the detection of incidental thyroid nodules is well documented. The case of a middle-aged woman with dual pathology of parathyroid adenoma and papillary thyroid cancer detected on FCH and FDG PET/CT is presented.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is caused by parathyroidadenoma in the majority of cases and diagnosis is usuallymade biochemically. Pre-surgical localization of parathyroidadenoma is essential to limit the extent of surgery and avoidmissing them at ectopic sites. Anatomical and functional imagingare used for the localization, but may fail to identify thesmall and ectopic parathyroid adenoma. We present a case ofsmall sized ectopic parathyroid adenoma at unusual locationdetected by F-18 fluorocholine (FCH) PET/CT, where otherimaging modalities failed. The post-operative histopathologyconfirmed the diagnosis of ectopic parathyroid adenoma.

Copper deficiency was induced in eight male buffalo calves by adding molybdenum (30 ppm wet basis) to their diet. Copper status was monitored from the liver copper concentration and a level below 30 ppm (DM basis) was considered as deficient. Haemoglobin, haematocrit, total and differential leucocyte numbers were determined. The functions of peripheral neutrophils were assessed by in vitro phagocytosis and killing of Staphylococcus aureus. The effect of molybdenum induced copper deficiency on bone marrow was monitored. The mean total leucocyte count was unaffected whereas a significant fall in neutrophil count coincided with the fall in hepatic copper level to $23.9{\pm}2.69$ ppm. Reduced blood neutrophil numbers was not accompanied by any change in the proportion of different neutrophil precursor cells in bone marrow. It was hypothesised that buffalo calves were more tolerant to dietary molybdenum excess than cattle. It was concluded that neutropenia in molybdenum induced copper deficiency occurred without any effect on their synthesis and maturation process. Bone marrow studies in healthy calves revealed higher percentage of neutrophilic myelocytes and metamyelocytes as compared to cattle.
Synthesis and surface modification of ZnO:Cu nanoparticles by silica and PMMA

ZnO nanoparticles doped with Cu were synthesized by solid state reaction using different precursor routes and varying growth environment. Average crystallite size varied from 40 to 100 nm depending upon synthesis temperature, lower temperature favouring smaller particle size. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that particles synthesized at 250 ℃ were in the shape of nanorods but those synthesized at 900 ℃ had spherical shape. Luminescence emission showed marked dependence on the growth conditions varying from ultraviolet (UV) emission to green emission. For making the luminescent nanoparticles bio-compatible, a bioinorganic interface on ZnO:Cu nanoparticles was created by coating them with inert silica. Surface modification of ZnO:Cu was also done with lipophilic polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). ZnO:Cu nanoparticles showed hexagonal wurtzite structure and the coating of silica was confirmed with the presence of two extra peaks due to silica in the XRD spectra. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and FTIR spectroscopy indicated that PMMA molecules were adsorbed on the surface of ZnO:Cu nanoparticles. SEM images revealed that PMMA adsorption improved the dispersibilty of ZnO:Cu nanoparticles.

Cd-In-Te films were electro-deposited potentiostatically over SnO2:F coated glass substrates from aqueous acidic solutionscontainingCdSO 4, InCl3 and TeO2 at 85 .C. Cyclic voltammetric studies were carried out to study the growth process and thepotential range for ternary CdInTe thin film deposition. Crystalline structure and surface morphological studies were carried outOptical transmission studies showed a direct band structure and the band gap of the deposited film change with the depositionpotential. A typical decrease from 1.2 to 1.1 eV in the optical band gap was observed on increasing the cathodic deposition potentialfrom)0.5 to)0.54 V (SCE).. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
