        Growth Responses and Nutrient Absorption Characteristics of Ardisia Pot Plants in Two Growth Stages as Influenced by Nutrient Solution Strengths

        Ardisia pot plants have been popularly marketed as an interior ground cover and a foliage pot plant because of its shiny red berries in winter season. This study was carried out to investigate the plant growth and nutrient absorption characteristics of Ardisia pot plants according to the growth stage and nutrient solution strength. The Sonneveld solutions were diluted to 0, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 times to make treatment solutions. The plants were examined at the vegetative (rooted cutting that have not flowered) and reproductive (more than one year old plant that have flowered) growth stage. A. pusilla showed no remarkable changes in plant growth according to growth stage and nutrient strength. The excess nutrients of the higher strength treatments of 1/2 and 1 times accumulated in the nutrient solution; therefore, the nutrient concentration of 1/4 times was the most effective treatment to economize nutrient supply and improve plant growth. However, some nutrients should be adjusted in the nutrient solution. The compositions of nutrient solution must be adjusted to supplement the contents of total nitrogen as calcium in leaves decreased during the flowering and fruiting. In A. japonica, the nutrient strength must be supplied in different levels according to the growth stage. The nutrient solution strength of 1 times was recommended at the vegetative stage and 1/4 times at the reproductive stage. The leaf contents of calcium and magnesium decreased in the nutrient treatments compared to control; so nutrient solution composition must be regulated for this two nutrients. The excess nutrients accumulated in the higher strength treatments of 1/2 and 1 times until 18 weeks, but the nutrients of ammonium, phosphate, potassium, and magnesium were absorbed suddenly after 18 weeks in these treatments. Therefore, supplementation of these nutrients during this period must be considered. According to this study, the needed nutritional conditions of the two plants in the same genus were different. Therefore, the nutrients must be supplied in the proper time for each plant to harvest high quality products.

        Clinicopathological Characteristics of Colon Cancer Diagnosed at Primary Health Care Institutions

        Background/Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic characteristics of colon cancers detectedat the SOK Sokpeynhan Internal Medical Network, a nationwide system of primary health care institutions. Methods: Weanalyzed 579 colon cancer patients diagnosed using colonoscopy at the SOK network from January 2011 through December2012. Cancers from the rectum to the splenic flexure were classified as left colon cancer. Patients over 65 were classified assenior. Results: The mean age (±SD) of subjects was 60.9±10.5 years and 61.1% were men. More than one quarter (28.2%) ofpatients were asymptomatic. The prevalence of left colon cancer was higher (77.9%) than that for right colon cancer. The mostfrequent macroscopic and histologic types were depressed (58.9%) and moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma (52.2%),respectively. Asymptomatic subjects displayed protruding or well differentiated adenocarcinoma, while symptomatic patientswere more likely to display depressed or moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma (P <0.05). The mean age of the right coloncancer group was higher than that for the left colon cancer group (P <0.05). Among symptomatic patients, the most frequentsymptoms were bloody stool for patients with left colon cancer and abdominal discomfort for patients with right colon cancer(P <0.05). The prevalence of depressed cancer was higher in older subjects as compared to younger subjects (P <0.05). Theprevalence of right colon cancer tended to increase with age, although this difference did not achieve statistical significance(P >0.05). Conclusions: Study results indicated an increase of colon cancer amongst younger demographics in recent years.The effectiveness of colonoscopy screening was also evident, as asymptomatic patients demonstrated frequent findings of welldifferentiated adenocarcinomas. Study results also suggested a need for closer examination of older patients, as right coloncancer tended to increase with age. (Intest Res 2014;12:131-138)

        Large-scale assembly of ‘type-switchable’ field effect transistors based on carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles

        <P>We report the large-scale assembly of type-switchable field effect transistors (FETs) based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nanoparticles (NPs). In this device, the charges stored in NPs adjacent to ambipolar CNT channels were adjusted to control the carrier type and density in the channels. We demonstrated the real-time reconfiguration of individual FET types and logic circuit functionality. Theoretical simulation of a model system was provided to explain this doping effect. This work takes advantage of the ambipolar properties of CNTs and opens up the possibility to build new types of devices with reconfigurable functionalities. </P>

        Background and Aims: Carcinoid tumor are slow growing neoplasms developing from enterochromaffin cells. The incidence of rectal carcinoid tumors has increased markedly and a recent study reported that the rectum is the most common site of carcinoid tumor in the gastrointestinal tract. This study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) with endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for rectal carcinoid tumor. Patients and Methods: Between January 2004 to December 2014, 153 patients undewent either EMR (n=85) or ESD (n=68) for rectal carcinoid tumors. The characteristics of the patients and tumors, the rate of complete resection and the rate of complications were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Baseline characteristics showed no significant difference between the 2 groups. Data on clinical outcomes also showed no significant difference between the 2 groups except the procedure time. The procedure time in EMR group was significantly shorter than in ESD group. Conclusions: Our study shows that the treatment of rectal carcinoid tumor with ESD is not superior to EMR.

      • Comprehensive Approach to Identifying Pysical Markers of Sperm Freezability

        Processes of cryopreservation consists of three steps: dilution with the extender/cooling (Step 1), addition of cryoprotectant (Step 2), and freezing/thawing (Step 3) and spermatozoa are exposed different kind of environment and stress in each step. We categorized sperm samples as good freezablitiy (GF), damaged by cryoprotectant (DCP), and damaged by freezing (DF) and identified characteristics of each group in different step of cryopreservation. In Step 2, DCP was significantly decreased in motility, rapid speed and increased in slow speed. DF was significantly decreased in only motility whereas there were no significant difference between GF and DF and significantly higher than DCP in Step 2. Motility, rapid, medium speed of all group were significantly decreased in Step 3 and GF was significantly higer than other groups. AR pattern of all groups were significantly increased in Step 3 whereas GF was significantly lower than other groups. Additionally AR pattern of DF was significantly increased in Step 2. F pattern of DF and DCP were significantly decreased in Step 3. There no difference of B pattern in whole process. Mitochondrial activity of DCP was significantly decreased in Step 2 and mtichondrial activity of all groups were significantly decreased in Step 3. However mtichondrial activity of GF was higher than other groups. Viability result shows same significant difference with mitochondrial pattern. The present study compared with various sperm parameters in different groups which has different freezability. We defined different two types of group that damaged from different step of cryopreservation. DF and DCP is mainly damaged in Step 3 and Step 2 respectively. The results of current study suggest that various sperm parameters can be used as physical markers in freezability.

      • Curvature and Hand Comfort for Unimanual Operations

        To design handheld devices, physical comfort is one of the most crucial requirements. Recently, curved handheld touchscreens were released for enhancing comfort, but the effect has not been proved yet. Regarding user behavior with the device, it has been observed that 1/3 of user population of smartphone operate the device unimanully in a previous research. This study aimed to verify the effect of curvature on comfort when using handheld touchscreen devices. Comfort level was measured employing both the subjective rating and EMG methods. Three mock-ups of handheld touchscreen device with different curvatures were utilized. One was flat device and the others had curvatures of 400R and 100R. An experiment was conducted on tapping, typing and dragging tasks. The results indicated that curvature of the handheld touchscreen devices did not affect muscle activities, but subjective comfort level. Overall, this study suggests that there may be other design elements more important than curvature of handheld touchscreen determining comfort of touch screen use.

        The Efficacy and Safety of Postoperative Autologous Transfusion of Filtered Shed Blood and Anticoagulant Prophylaxis in Total Knee Arthroplasty Patients

        Purpose: To assess the efficacy and safety of autologous transfusion of filtered shed blood in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Materials and Methods: A total of 42 patients with TKA (group A; without autologous transfusion in 15 patients, group B; with autologous transfusion in 27 patients) were evaluated retrospectively. The influence of autologous reinfusion of filtered blood, bleeding tendency, amount of blood drainage, rate of allogenic transfusion, and the postoperative changes of hemoglobin were analyzed. Results: Allogenic transfusion was needed in 26.7% (4/15) of group A and none of group B till postoperative 48 hours. Till postoperative 14 days, 46.7% (7/15) of group A needed allogenic transfusion while 7.4% (2/27) in group B. The average drained blood volume was 1,197±400 mL in group A and 975±422 mL in group B. The average decrease of hemoglobin at postoperative 1, 7, and 14 days was 2.9±1.5, 2.9±1.6, and 2.3±1.5 g/dL respectively in group A and 2.7±0.8, 4.0±1.0, and 2.9±1.3 g/dL respectively in group B. Conclusions: An autotransfusion system lowered the allogenic transfusion rate, while anticoagulants did not increase the amount of drained blood. An autotransfusion system with anticoagulants was effective and safe to save the shed blood in TKA.

        Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 is a key factor of male fertility

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) is a type III kinase that is highly expressed in seminal plasma of infertile men. FLT3 activation can be blocked by inhibition of its phosphorylation using the nontoxic and selective inhibitor, quizartinib. We investigated the function of FLT3 and the corresponding effects of quizartinib in mouse spermatozoa. Spermatozoa were treated with different concentrations (0.1, 1, 10, 20, and 30 μM) of quizartinib for 90 min at 37 °C in 5% CO<SUB>2</SUB> in air. FLT3 was detected in capacitated and non-capacitated spermatozoa. While the level of FLT3 was unaffected, the levels of phospho-FLT3 were significantly altered in spermatozoa by quizartinib. Exposure of spermatozoa to higher concentrations of quizartinib significantly altered sperm viability, motility, motion kinematics, levels of intracellular ATP, and capacitation status. Fertilization and early embryonic development were suppressed by quizartinib. This may have occurred as a consequence of decreased protein kinase A (PKA) activity and tyrosine phosphorylation. The inhibition of FLT3 by quizartinib may affect the fertilization and embryonic development by reducing tyrosine phosphorylation through a PKA-dependent pathway. Our data implicate FLT3 as a biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of male fertility. In addition, quizartinib has potential for development as a new contraceptive agent.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Inhibition of FLT3 in spermaotozoa using quizartinib significantly altered various sperm functions. </LI> <LI> The inhibition of FLT3 significantly decreased protein kinase A (PKA) activity and tyrosine phosphorylation. </LI> <LI> In addition, fertilization and early embryonic development were suppressed by inhibition of FLT3. </LI> <LI> We suggest that FLT3 can be used as a biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of male fertility. </LI> </UL> </P>
