        Numerical and experimental evaluation of the mechanical behavior of Kevlar/glass fiber reinforced epoxy hybrid composites

        Flexural, tensile, and impact strength of hybrid Kevlar/glass reinforced epoxy composite is studied. Six different types of hybrid composite material were manufactured by hand layup process using different compositions of Kevlar and glass fiber. Tensile, flexural and impact strengths of manufactured samples were investigated using standard tests and compared. It is observed that tensile strength is greater for combinations with higher percentage (%) of Kevlar fabric and decreases with an increase in the glass fabric %age. Flexural strength is higher for combinations with greater %age of glass fabric and decreases with an increase in the Kevlar fabric %age. From drop weight test, it is found from visual inspection that damaged area is increased with an increase in the glass fabric percentage. Numerical simulation model incorporated with elastoplastic material data successfully predicts tensile and flexural experimental results.

        Antispasmodic, Bronchodilator and Vasodilator Activities of (+)-Catechin, a Naturally Occurring Flavonoid

        Catechin is a well-known flavonoid found in many food plants and often utilized by naturopaths for the symptomatic treatment of several gastrointestinal, respiratory and vascular diseases. Our aim was to explore the biological basis for the medicinal use of this flavonoid by investigating whether catechin exhibits any pharmacological activity on smooth muscle preparations. We found that catechin dose-dependently relaxes both spontaneous and high K+ (80 mM)-induced contraction in rabbit jejunum, showing specificity for the latter by causing a rightward shift in the Ca2+ dose-response curve. Similar results were observed with verapamil, a standard Ca2+ channel blocker (CCB). Catechin also inhibited high K+-induced contraction in intact smooth muscle preparations from rat stomach fundus, guinea-pig ileum and guinea-pig trachea. In rat aorta, catechin inhibited phenylephrine (PE, 1 μM) and K+-induced contractions in a similar fashion. In PE-contracted, endothelium-intact aorta, this vasodilator effect was partially blocked by Nù-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester and atropine, indicating activity at cholinergic receptors and possibly a CCB effect at higher doses of catechin. In guinea-pig atria catechin was found inactive. These data suggest that catechin may possess Ca2+ antagonist activity - in addition to an endothelium-dependent relaxant component in blood vessels - thus providing a pharmacological basis for the efficacy of catechin in hyperexcitability disorders of gastrointestinal, respiratory and vascular smooth muscle.

        Influence of Financial Literacy and Educational Skills on Entrepreneurial Intent: Empirical Evidence from Young Entrepreneurs of Pakistan

        This paper attempts to study the impact of Financial Literacy on Youth Entrepreneurial Intent in Pakistan. A closed-ended self-administered structured questionnaire covering financial literacy, computer knowledge, financial attitude, and financial knowledge with Entrepreneurial Intent was collected from young entrepreneurs. The research tried to investigate the education level with computer skill to inspect the effect of financial literateness on young generation Entrepreneurial Intent in the context of Pakistan. The research model was tested using PLS-SEM and authenticating a measurement model through the advanced methodology and their association with Entrepreneurial Intent. Results revealed that financial literacy and its two parts (financial attitude and financial knowledge) have a positive impact on Entrepreneurial Intent. The size of the joint impact of financial literacy and its components on Entrepreneurial Intent was assessed to be adequate. Entrepreneurial Intent is essential for creating new firms to maintain economic development. Furthermore, it is determined in this research that if youth has better financial knowledge and financial attitude, the probability of Entrepreneurial Intent increases. This suggests that if the youth in Pakistan desire to attain a higher limit of Entrepreneurial Intent, they must implement financial literacy models for enhancing and promoting their current Entrepreneurial Intent.

        Studies on Cardio-suppressant, Vasodilator and Tracheal Relaxant Effects of Sarcococca saligna

        Sarcococca saligna is a shrub that is traditionally used for its medicinal properties in Pakistan. In this study we report the cardio-suppressant, vasodilator and tracheal relaxant activities of the aqueous-methanolic extract (Ss.Cr) of the plant. Ss.Cr, that tested positive for the presence of saponins, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, and alkaloids, exhibited a dose-dependent (0.3-5 mg/mL) negative inotropic and chronotropic effect on the isolated guinea-pig atrium which was resistant to atropine (1 μM) and aminophylline (10 μM) pretreatment. In rabbit thoracic aorta, Ss.Cr dose-dependently (0.1-3 mg/mL) relaxed the high K+ (80 mM) and phenylephrine (PE, 1 μM)-induced contractions, indicating a possible Ca++ channel blocking (CCB) effect. When tested against PE (1 μM) control peaks in normal Ca++ and Ca++-free Kreb’s solution, Ss.Cr exhibited dose-dependent (0.1-3 mg/mL) inhibition, being more potent in relaxing the PE responses in Ca++-free Kreb’s solution, thus indicating specific blockade of Ca++ release from the intracellular stores. Ss.Cr also relaxed the agonist-induced contractions in: a) rat aorta irrespective of the presence of endothelium or nitric oxide synthase inhibitor L-NAME and b) rabbit and guinea-pig tracheal strips. The data shows that Ss.Cr possesses possible Ca++ channel blocking activity which might be responsible for its observed cardio-suppressant, vasodilator and tracheal relaxant effects though more tests are required to confirm this Ca++ channel blocking effect.

        <P>Arsenic (As) contamination of groundwater reservoirs is a global environmental and health issue given to its toxic and carcinogenic nature. Over 170 million people have been affected by As due to the ingestion of As-contaminated groundwater. Conventional methods such as reverse osmosis, ion exchange, and electrodialysis are commonly used for the remediation of As-contaminated water; however, the high cost and sludge production put limitations on their application to remove As from water. This review critically addresses the use of various agricultural waste materials (e.g., sugarcane bagasse, peels of various fruits, wheat straw) as biosorbents, thereby offering an eco-friendly and low-cost solution for the removal of As from contaminated water supplies. The effect of solution chemistry such as solution pH, cations, anions, organic ligands, and various other factors (e.g., temperature, contact time, sorbent dose) on As biosorption, and safe disposal methods for As-loaded biosorbents to reduce secondary As contamination are also discussed.</P>

      • An Ensemble Approach to Detect Fake News Spreaders on Twitter

        Detection of fake news is a complex and a challenging task. Generation of fake news is very hard to stop, only steps to control its circulation may help in minimizing its impacts. Humans tend to believe in misleading false information. Researcher started with social media sites to categorize in terms of real or fake news. False information misleads any individual or an organization that may cause of big failure and any financial loss. Automatic system for detection of false information circulating on social media is an emerging area of research. It is gaining attention of both industry and academia since US presidential elections 2016. Fake news has negative and severe effects on individuals and organizations elongating its hostile effects on the society. Prediction of fake news in timely manner is important. This research focuses on detection of fake news spreaders. In this context, overall, 6 models are developed during this research, trained and tested with dataset of PAN 2020. Four approaches N-gram based; user statistics-based models are trained with different values of hyper parameters. Extensive grid search with cross validation is applied in each machine learning model. In N-gram based models, out of numerous machine learning models this research focused on better results yielding algorithms, assessed by deep reading of state-of-the-art related work in the field. For better accuracy, author aimed at developing models using Random Forest, Logistic Regression, SVM, and XGBoost. All four machine learning algorithms were trained with cross validated grid search hyper parameters. Advantages of this research over previous work is user statistics-based model and then ensemble learning model. Which were designed in a way to help classifying Twitter users as fake news spreader or not with highest reliability. User statistical model used 17 features, on the basis of which it categorized a Twitter user as malicious. New dataset based on predictions of machine learning models was constructed. And then Three techniques of simple mean, logistic regression and random forest in combination with ensemble model is applied. Logistic regression combined in ensemble model gave best training and testing results, achieving an accuracy of 72%.

      • Arsenic removal by natural and chemically modified water melon rind in aqueous solutions and groundwater

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Contamination of groundwater with toxic arsenic (As) has become an emerging health and environmental problem around the world, which has seen significant attention amongst the scientists for development of new sorbents to remediate As-contaminated water. Here, we explored the arsenate (As(V)) and arsenite (As(III)) sorption to natural water melon rind (WMR), xanthated WMR and citric acid-modified WMR in aqueous solutions, and determined potential of the most potent sorbent for As removal in groundwater. Xanthated WMR (X-WMR) showed relatively higher As(V) and As(III) removal than the citric acid modified WMR (CA-WMR) and natural WMR. The maximum As(III) (99%) and As(V) (98%) removal was obtained at pH 8.2 and 4.6, respectively, by X-WMR at 4 mg L<SUP>−1</SUP> initial As(V) and As(III) concentrations and sorbent dose of 1 g L<SUP>−1</SUP>. Langmuir isotherm model best fitted (<I>R</I> <SUP> <I>2</I> </SUP> of up to 0.96) the data both for As(III) and As(V) sorption to X-WMR. Sorption kinetics of As(V) and As(III) was well described (<I>R</I> <SUP> <I>2</I> </SUP> of up to 0.99) by the pseudo second-order model on surface of the X-WMR. Thermodynamic investigations revealed that As(V) and As(III) sorption was endothermic and spontaneous. The FTIR spectroscopy depicted the presence of different surface function groups (OH, COOH, S-bearing (C=S, S=O and S–S)) which were involved in As(V) and As(III) sequestration on the sorbents examined here. Significantly, X-WMR showed (up to 49%) greater As(III) and As(V) sorption than that of natural WMR. Our results demonstrated that X-WMR efficiently removed 94%–100% (<I>n</I> = 16) of As from As-contaminated drinking well water which possessed detectable concentrations of some anions (e.g., SO<SUB>4</SUB>, CO<SUB>3</SUB>, HCO<SUB>3</SUB>). This study highlights that the X-WMR has potential to remove As, notably As(III), from solutions and drinking water, and might be utilized as a reactive medium for the treatment of As-contaminated water.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Water melon rind (WMR) was tested for arsenic removal potential from water. </LI> <LI> Xanthated WMR removed up to 99% of As(III)/As(V) in solutions. </LI> <LI> Langmuir and pseudo second-order models provided the best fits for As(III) and As(V). </LI> <LI> FTIR spectra showed arsenic sequestration with surface functional groups of sorbents. </LI> <LI> Xanthated WMR successfully removed 94–100% arsenic from drinking well water. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
