        Comparative transcriptome analysis of salt-sensitive and salt-tolerant maize reveals potential mechanisms to enhance salt resistance

        Background Salt stress is a devastating environmental stress that causes plant growth inhibition and yield reduction. Objective The identification of salt-tolerant genes brings hope for the generation of salinity-tolerant crop plants through molecular breeding. Methods In this study, one salt-sensitive and one salt-tolerant maize inbred line were screened from 242 maize inbred lines. Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related enzyme activities were detected and salt-responsive comparative transcriptome analysis was performed for control and 220 mM NaCl treated maize leaves. Results Salt-tolerant maize inbred line (L87) showed higher ROS-related enzyme (SOD, POD, APX and CAT) activities and accumulated relatively lower levels of ROS under salt stress. Of the total DEGs, 1856 upregulated DEGs were specific to L87, including stress tolerance-related members of the 70kDa family of heat shock proteins (Hsp70s) and aquaporins. The DEGs involved in the abscisic acid (ABA), ethylene, jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) signal transduction pathways may determine the difference in salt tolerance between the two varieties, especially one central component SnRK2, that positively regulates ABA signaling and was only upregulated in L87. Analysis of DEGs related to ROS scavenging showed that some peroxidase (POD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) genes specific to L87 probably enhanced its salt tolerance. The analysis of differentially expressed transcription factors (TFs) suggested that WRKY TFs could contribute to the difference in salt tolerance between the two maize lines. Conclusion Compared with Salt-sensitive maize inbred line (L29), L87 exhibits specific regulatory mechanisms related to salt tolerance, including plant hormone interactions, ROS scavenging and the regulation of TFs. Our study identifies new candidate genes that may regulate maize tolerance to salt stress and provides useful information for breeding maize with high salt resistance.

        NDFT-based Image Steganographic Scheme with Discrimination of Tampers

        A new and secure image steganographic scheme based on nonuniform discrete Fourier transform (NDFT) is proposed in this paper. First, the chaotic system is introduced to select embedding points randomly in NDFT domain suitable range, and NDFT is implemented on every non-overlapping block of eight consecutive pixels. Second, the secret messages are scrambled by chaotic systems, and embedded into frequency coefficients by quantization method. The stego-image is obtained by inverse NDFT (INDFT). Besides, in order to discriminate tampers, the low frequency wavelet coefficients of 7 most significant bits (MSBs) of the stego-image are converted into the binary sequence after nonuniform scalar quantization. Then the obtained binary sequence is scrambled by the chaotic systems, and embedded into the least significant bit (LSB) of the stego-image. Finally, the watermarked stego-image can be obtained by a new improved LSB steganographic method. The embedded secret messages can be extracted from the watermarked stego-image without the original cover image. Experimental results show the validity of the proposed scheme, and dual statistics attacks are also conducted to indicate the security.

        Study on the lubrication film formation and characteristics of different graphite seal composites

        In order to study the formation and characteristics of the lubricating film of graphite composites in solid lubrication, the mechanical properties, micro-structure, friction and wear properties of graphite and impregnated samples are compared and analysed. Results show that the graphite/antimony composites have compression strength of 300.2 MPa and hardness of 98.3 HS, which has excellent friction performance and exhibits the law of full film lubrication. The graphite/resin composites with compression strength of 244.9 MPa and hardness of 87.0 HS exhibit the law of residual film lubrication. Under the condition that the load is 24.1 MPa (heavy load) and the friction pair is 45# (small hardness), the lubrication state of the composite materials are close to full film lubrication. External environmental factors such as load, speed, and pair of grinding pairs have different effects on the friction coefficient and the formation of lubricating film.

        Preparation and Aroma Analysis of Chinese Traditional Fermented Flour Paste

        Volatile compounds in Chinese fermented flourpaste were extracted using simultaneous distillation andextraction (SDE) and analyzed using gas chromatographymassspectrometry (GC-MS) with DB-5 and DB-WAXcapillary columns. A total of 84 volatile compounds wereidentified, including 8 aldehydes, 19 esters, 14 acids, 17hydrocarbons, 7 heterocycles, and 19 other trace compounds. The major volatiles included furfural, 5-methyl-2-phenyl-2-hexenal, 4-ethylguaiacol, 2-phenylacetaldehyde, ethylhexadecanoate, isovaleraldehyde, palmitic acid, and 5-methylfurfural. Aroma compounds were investigated usinggas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) and aroma extractdilution analysis (AEDA). A total of 27 olfactory regionswere exposed and 18 aroma extracts were located. Altogether,6 aroma compounds identified using GC-O showed higherflavor dilution factors (FD≥32), including isovaleraldehyde,furfural, pentanoic acid, 2-acetylfuran, 1-octen-3-ol, and 2-phenylacetaldehyde. Compared with soybean sauce, fermentedflour paste has more esters and aldehydes, which contributeto the desired fruity, caramel, sweet, and roasted odors.

        Portal pressure gradient and serum albumin: A simple combined parameter associated with the appearance of ascites in decompensated cirrhosis treated with transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt

        Background/Aims: In recent years, greater assessment accuracy after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) to ascertain prognosis has become important in decompensated cirrhosis due to portal hypertension. The aim of this study was to assess the ratio of the portal pressure gradient (PPG) pre-TIPS (pre-PPG) to albumin (PPA), which influence ascites formation in cirrhotic patients in the 6-months after TIPS placement, and is a metric introduced in our study. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of 58 patients with decompensated cirrhosis admitted to an academic hospital for the purpose of TIPS placement. We collected the following data: demographics, laboratory measures, and PPG during the TIPS procedure. Then we analyzed the association between the above data and ascites formation post- TIPS in cirrhosis patients. Results: Twenty-two patients with ascites and 28 without ascites were evaluated. Univariate and binary logistic regression analysis were adjusted for the following variables: to determine prognosis; Child-Pugh scores, lymphocyte count, platelet count, hemoglobin level, albumin level and pre-PPG or PPA. The outcome showed that PPA was better than pre-PPG and albumin for predicting ascites according to area under receiver operating characteristic curves and a statistical model that also showed PPA’s influence 6-months post-TIPS. Conclusions: The combined measurement of pre-PPG and albumin, defined as PPA, may provide a better way to predict post-TIPS ascites in decompensated cirrhosis, which underlines the need for a large clinical trial in the future.

        Nasal similarity measure of 3D faces based on curve shape space

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We propose a novel method for measuring the nasal similarity among 3D faces. Firstly, we construct a representation for the nose shape, which is composed of a set of geodesic curves, each crosses the bridge of the nose. Next, using these geodesic curves, we formulate a similarity measure to compare among noses in the curve shape space. Under the Riemannian framework, the shape space is a quotient space for which the scaling, translation and rotation are removed. Since the nose similarity measure is based on the shape comparison, the proposed method has the following advantages: (1) the similarity measure is robust to facial expressions since the nose is not affected by facial expressions; (2) the geometric features of the nose shape match well with the human perception; (3) the similarity measure is independent of the mesh grid because the chosen nose curves are not sensitive to the triangular mesh model. We construct a nasal hierarchical structure for noses organization which is based on nose similarity measure results. In our experiments, we evaluate the performance of the proposed method and compare it with competing methods on three public face databases namely, FRGC2.0, Texas3D and BosphorusDB. The results show superiority of the proposed method in terms of both the speed and the accuracy when the nasal measurements are processed in the nasal hierarchical structure and the nasal samples with low sampling rate (5%-25% of original point cloud).</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We present a representation of the nose shape. </LI> <LI> We propose a nasal similarity measure based on the metric of nose curves in the shape space. </LI> <LI> We construct a nasal hierarchical structure for nose statistical analysis. </LI> </UL> </P>
