Background : Previous data have been reported that subtype B is prevalent in South Korea, but neither the extent nor the proportion of subtypes could be evaluated. This study was designed to analyze the distribution of HIV-1 subtypes, temporal instructions and transmission dynamics between epidemiological groups. Methods : 1,280 Koreans had been diagnosed as HIV seropositive during the period 1985 to 2000. Among them, 134 individuals were selected for this molecular epidemiological study. 134 DNAs were isolated from uncultured or cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells. V3-V5 (0.7 kb) fragment of HIV-1 env gene was amplified by nested polymerase chain reaction and was sequenced. Results : HIV-1 isolates from thirty-seven homosexuals were all subtype B (100%). On the other hand, 66 isolates from 94 heterosexuals were subtype B (70%) and 28 were non B subtypes (30% : 13 A, 4 C, 2 D, 8 E , 1 G). Only subtype B strains were isolated from 73 males who were infected with HIV inside Korea while 16 B and 20 non B subtype strains were isolated from 36 males who were HIV infected outside of Korea. However, B and non B strains were isolated half and half from females who were infected inside Korea except one. Conclusion : The HIV-1 subtype B strains are prevalent in Korea from the early HIV infection until present in both homo and heterosexuals. Non B strains have been transmitted from men who were infected outside Korea to their spouses and casual partners. So, we need further study to monitor subtype B and non B HIV transmission in epidemiological groups of Korea, (Korean J Infect Dis 33:311∼318, 2001)

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is still a common problem in premature infants. Some BPD patients develop acquired lobar emphysema (ALE). There is no satisfactory way to improve ALE in preterm infants with BPD. In this study, we present the youngest case of lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) with BPD in preterm infants. A 560-g female baby was born at 24 weeks 1 day gestation and diagnosed with respiratory distress syndrome. Her lung was deteriorated and needed prolonged ventilator support. At 6 weeks after birth, several bullae were appeared on right upper lobe and progressed to large size occupying the whole right lung field. At 3 months of age, LVRS was performed at postmenstrual age of 36 weeks due to prolonged ventilator care. Her respiratory symptoms improved after operation. She was extubated 14th day postoperatively. The remainder of her hospital course was uneventful, and she was discharged at 5 months of age. LVRS is rare procedure in the pediatric population, especially extremely rare in the preterm infants. Our case is the youngest in infants with LVRS due to BPD. LVRS might be a good therapeutic option in treatment of bullae accompanied BPD in preterm infants.

In this study, we screened molecules from marine natural products that stimulate osteoblast differentiation. We found that phorbaketal A significantly stimulates osteoblast differentiation in mesenchymal cells. Increased interaction of TAZ and Runx2 stimulated phorbaketal A-induced expression of osteoblastic marker genes. The activation of ERK was important for the stimulation of differentiation because an inhibitor of ERK blocked phorbaketal A-induced osteogenic differentiation. <P>Conclusions: VSIG4 is overexpressed in ovarian cancers compared with that in benign tumors. This finding supports VSIG4 being used as a potential therapeutic target for ovarian cancer. Furthermore, soluble VSIG4 levels are associated with the progression and recurrence of ovarian cancer, indicating that soluble VSIG4 may be used as a potential biomarker for predicting tumor prognosis.</P>

Objective: Meconium related ileus (MRI) was defined as functional ileus in neonates characterized by impaired meconium excretion with preferential occurrence in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcome of VLBW infants who underwent surgical treatement, especially exploratory laparotomy and ileostomy, due to MRI. Methods: This retrospective study included VLBW infants born in our hospital between January 2010 and December 2018. Infants were included if they were diagnosed with MRI and underwent exploratory laparotomy. In order to compare the clinical characteristics, matched controls for each subject were chosen. Results: Among the 178 VLBW infants delivered during the study period, total 19 cases and 19 controls were identified. The mean GA and birth weight in the MRI group were 27.6±1.9 weeks and 966±233 g, respectively, and 28.7±2.2 weeks and 1,005±198 g, respectively, in the control group. There was no significant difference between the both groups in perinatal, maternal and neonatal characteristics such as respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Day of full enteral feeding and hospitalization were significantly longer in MRI group compared to control group). The proportion of less than 3 percentile for postmenstrual age at discharge were significantly higher in MRI group (73% vs. 21%, P=0.001). Conclusion: The results of our study showed that delayed treatment of MRI lead to longer hospital stay and lower weight at discharge. Early treatment including exploratory laparotomy should be considered to improve outcome when the baby was suspected MRI with risk factors.

<P>Osteoporosis is a degenerative bone disease characterized by low bone mass and is caused by an imbalance between osteoblastic bone formation and osteoclastic bone resorption. It is known that the bioactive compounds present in green tea increase osteogenic activity and decrease the risk of fracture by improving bone mineral density. However, the detailed mechanism underlying these beneficial effects has yet to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the osteogenic effect of (−)-epicatechin gallate (ECG), a major bioactive compound found in green tea. We found that ECG effectively stimulates osteoblast differentiation, indicated by the increased expression of osteoblastic marker genes. Up-regulation of osteoblast marker genes is mediated by increased expression and interaction of the transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ) and Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2). ECG facilitates nuclear localization of TAZ through PP1A. PP1A is essential for osteoblast differentiation because inhibition of PP1A activity was shown to suppress ECG-mediated osteogenic differentiation. Taken together, the results showed that ECG stimulates osteoblast differentiation through the activation of TAZ and RUNX2, revealing a novel mechanism for green tea-stimulated osteoblast differentiation.</P>
