White spots on the mucosal surface of the duodenum in dogs with lymphocytic plasmacytic enteritis

Distended lacteals, described as expanded white villi in duodenum, are strongly indicative of primary intestinal lymphangiectasia. In the present study, we evaluated the significance of white spots present in the duodenal mucosa of dogs with lymphocytic plasmacytic enteritis (LPE). Fifty dogs with LPE were included in this study, and white spots were detected in the duodenal mucosa in 22 dogs during endoscopy. Hypoproteinemia was more frequent in dogs with white spots than in dogs without spots (p = 0.02). Serum protein and albumin concentration were significantly lower in LPE dogs with white spots (p = 0.038) compared to LPE dogs without white spots (p = 0.039). There was a significant correlation between white spots density and lymphatic dilatation histological scores (p = 0.023; ρ = 0.481). These results suggest that the presence of white spots in the duodenal mucosa of dogs is not a finding exclusive for intestinal lymphangiectasia. Low serum protein and albumin concentrations together with lymphatic dilatation seem to be related to the presence of white spots in the duodenal mucosa of LPE dogs.
Creativity in Gifted & Talented Children
Mercedes Ferrando,Carmen Ferrandiz,Maria Dolores Prieto,Maria Rosario Bermejo,Marta Sainz 대한사고개발학회 2008 The International Journal of Creativity & Problem Vol.18 No.2
The aim of the research was to study the creativity of G&T children. It has been emphasised in different theories that creativity is an essential factor in the configuration and measurement of G&T students’ cognitive profile. Therefore, it is important to understand how giftedness and creativity can be identified and assessed. The assessment of creativity in G&T children mainly focuses on using TTCT to understand the complex creativity of those children. This article presents an empirical study carried out in Murcia (Spain) orientated towards comparing creativity between G&T and non-gifted or non-talented. The results indicated that gifted and creative talented children scored higher than non-G&T children. Gifted children showed greater flexibility, which means that they have a high ability to manage and process different types of information. It was also found that creatively talented children showed higher scores in originality, mental flexibility and fluency.

Full-thickness burns almost always require skin grafting because the severity prevents the natural regenerative process. Here, we illustrate the potential to promote natural skin regeneration utilizing growth factors and regenerative proteins in purified amniotic fluid (PAF). A 24-year-old female suffered from full-thickness burns to her legs resulting from a rogue firework. This initiated a treatment plan involving extensive rehabilitation and skin grafting. Instead, the patient was treated with PAF (4 mL) administered topically over 2 days. Forty-five minutes following application, her pain decreased from 10/10 to 2/10. After two treatments her overall recovery time decreased by 75%–leaving her physicians surprised at the obviated need for skin grafting. Topical PAF relieved pain within minutes, making it easier to clean the affected area, enhancing sleep, and allowing more range of motion and autonomy. The efficiency of PAF to reduce pain allowed the patient to discontinue the use of prescribed hydrocodone, an opioid that is fueling an epidemic of abuse and addiction. Accelerated recovery time allowed the patient to return to work sooner, having broader economic implications on medical costs and personal time off. Finally, PAF enhanced the body’s own capacity to heal itself, avoiding painful and costly grafting and decreasing additional donor site scarring.
Ultrastructural Characterization of the Reversible Differentiation of Chloroplasts in Cucumber Fruit
( Tatjana Prebeg ),( Mercedes Wrischer ),( Hrvoje Fulgosi ),( Nikola Ljubesic ) 한국식물학회 2008 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.51 No.2
The changes in plastid ultrastructure in the pericarp of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) fruit were studied during fruit yellowing (which accompanied maturation) and regreening. In the course of fruit maturation, the thylakoid system was progressively reduced, and only a small number of membranes remained in the plastids of mature fruit. At the same time, the plastoglobules increased in size, often remaining in close proximity to the degrading thylakoids. In pericarp tissue which turned green again, the thylakoid network in the plastids was gradually reconstituted. Morphological similarities between the plastids in mature and regreening fruit indicated that the chloroplasts in regreened tissue were redifferentiated from the plastids of mature fruit. Reconstitution of the thylakoid system appeared to start from two morphologically distinct types of membranes: from double membranes which resembled thylakoids and from membrane-bound bodies (MBBs). The latter appeared to form thylakoids by two mechanisms: by detachment of extensions from their surfaces and by fragmentation. The plastoglobules remained in the plastids during thylakoid system reconstitution and were often observed in close proximity to developing thylakoids. In the course of chloroplast redifferentiation, several types of membraneous structures were found to be associated with the plastid envelope: (i) vesicles which appeared to separate from the envelope and to fuse subsequently with the developing thylakoids, (ii) tubules, and (iii) double-membrane sheets which appeared as de novo forming thylakoids.

Hen eggs are a source of bioactive compounds, of which the hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) protein. HEWL has a demonstrated antibacterial activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of native and heated HEWL hydrolysates obtained through hydrolysis with pepsin and to identify their peptides using the reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization–tandem mass spectrometry (RP-HPLC-ESI-MS-MS) analysis. Native and heat-treated HEWL was hydrolyzed with pepsin at pH 1.2, and their antibacterial activity was tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus carnosus. Two of the hydrolysates obtained presented high antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Native HEWL hydrolysate was a bactericide at 2.0 mg/mL against E. coli. Fifty-one peptide sequences were identified on the two hydrolysates. Peptides identified are cationic peptides. These peptides are rich in Lys and Arg cationic amino acids and have Trp in their sequences.
