        Identification of Plasma Biomarkers in Drug-Naïve Schizophrenia Using Targeted Metabolomics

        Objective Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a severe psychiatric disorder with unknown etiology and lacking specific biomarkers. Herein, we aimed to explore plasma biomarkers relevant to SCZ using targeted metabolomics. Methods Sixty drug-naïve SCZ patients and 36 healthy controls were recruited. Psychotic symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. We analyzed the levels of 271 metabolites in plasma samples from all subjects using targeted metabolomics, and identified metabolites that differed significantly between the two groups. Then we evaluated the diagnostic power of the metabolites based on receiver operating characteristic curves, and explored metabolites associated with the psychotic symptoms in SCZ patients. Results Twenty-six metabolites showed significant differences between SCZ patients and healthy controls. Among them, 12 metabolites were phosphatidylcholines and cortisol, ceramide (d18:1/22:0), acetylcarnitine, and γ-aminobutyric acid, which could significantly distinguish SCZ from healthy controls with the area under the curve (AUC) above 0.7. Further, a panel consisting of the above 4 metabolites had an excellent performance with an AUC of 0.867. In SCZ patients, phosphatidylcholines were positively related with positive symptoms, and cholic acid was positively associated with negative symptoms. Conclusion Our study provides insights into the metabolite alterations associated with SCZ and potential biomarkers for its diagnosis and symptom severity assessment.

        Flora of Offshore Islands in Shandong Province

        There are 474 species of native vascular plant distributed in offshore islands in Shandong Province, which belong to 262 genera and 82 families. The distribution types of genera of seed plant were classified into 15 types. Temperate characteristic is dominant in the flora of offshore islands and tropical characteristic ranks secondary. Therefore, some islands play the role of stepping islands. Furthermore, 98.85% of the total genera are monotypic or bitypic which shows the offshore habitat heterogeneity in Shandong Province.

        Belt-like VO2(M) with a rectangular cross section: A new route to prepare, the phase transition and the optical switching properties

        Belt-like VO2(M) with a rectangular cross section was first synthesized by the irreversible transformation of VO2(A) at the elevated temperatures under the inert atmosphere to the best of our knowledge. The asobtained samples were characterized by a combination of techniques including XRD, SEM and TEM. The processes of converting VO2(A) to VO2(M) were briefly discussed. The as-obtained VO2(M) has belt-like morphology with a rectangular cross section with typical lengths up to several tens of micrometers,widths ranging from tens of nanometers to several micrometers, and thicknesses about 60e150 nm. The morphology and size of the VO2(M) were dependent on that of the precursor VO2(A). The phase transition properties of VO2(M) were investigated by DSC, indicating that it exhibited a strong phase transition at 67.9 ℃ in the heating cycle and 61.1 ℃ in the cooling cycle. Furthermore, the optical switching property of VO2(M) was studied by the variable-temperature infrared spectra, and it was found that the as-obtained VO2(M) could be used as the optical switch.

        A New Method for Determination of 3D Active Earth Pressure of Unsaturated Backfills

        Determinations of active earth pressures are commonly performed two-dimensionally (2D) based on completely saturated and/or dry assumptions, though the soil in cases of geotechnical interest is mostly unsaturated and the earth pressures are usually of conspicuous three-dimensional (3D) features. In this paper, a novel finite prismoid element method (FPEM) for calculating the lateral earth pressures acting against the retaining wall is suggested. The main feature of the FPEM is that the whole backfill is discretized into numerous horizontally distributed prismoid elements that might characterized with different soil properties. For unsaturated backfills, the prismoid elements are characterized with various soil cohesions and unit soil weights. Upper bound solutions to active earth pressures under 2D and 3D conditions with and without suction are both calculated and compared with several other analytical ones, indicating the reliability and applicability of the proposed method. The responses of unsaturated backfills to surcharge loads on the crest are numerically studied and discussed. An illustrative example is reexamined to further demonstrate the practical use of the technique.

        Improvement of the electrochemical properties of V_3O_7ㆍH_2O nanobelts for Li battery application through synthesis of V_3O_7@C core-shell nanostructured composites

        V_3O_7ㆍH_2O@C core-shell structured composites have been successfully synthesized using V_3O_7ㆍH_2O nanobelts as the cores and glucose as the source of carbon in the presence of sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS). The as-obtained V_3O_7ㆍH_2O@C core-shell materials were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD),transmission electron microscopy (TEM), elemental analysis (EA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectrum. The thickness of the carbon shell can be controlled by the hydrothermal reaction time and the quantity of glucose. The surfactants have great influence on fabricating V_3O_7ㆍH_2O@C core-shell composites, which have been discussed in detail. V_3O_7@C composites were subsequently obtained through thermal treatment with V_3O_7ㆍH_2O@C. The electrochemical properties of V_3O_7@C core-shell composites were studied, indicating that the discharge capacity is still 151.2 mAh/g after 45 cycles, which is better than that of pure V_3O_7ㆍH_2O nanobelts.
