Functional Prediction of Hypothetical Proteins from Shigella flexneri and Validation of the Predicted Models by Using ROC Curve Analysis

        Md. Amran Gazi,Sultan Mahmud,Shah Mohammad Fahim,Mohammad Golam Kibria,Parag Palit,Md. Rezaul Islam,Humaira Rashid,Subhasish Das,Mustafa Mahfuz,Tahmeed Ahmeed 한국유전체학회 2018 Genomics & informatics Vol.16 No.4

Shigella spp. constitutes some of the key pathogens responsible for the global burden of diarrhoeal disease. With over 164 million reported cases per annum, shigellosis accounts for 1.1 million deaths each year. Majority of these cases occur among the children of the developing nations and the emergence of multi-drug resistance Shigella strains in clinical isolates demands the development of better/new drugs against this pathogen. The genome of Shigella flexneri was extensively analyzed and found 4,362 proteins among which the functions of 674 proteins, termed as hypothetical proteins (HPs) had not been previously elucidated. Amino acid sequences of all these 674 HPs were studied and the functions of a total of 39 HPs have been assigned with high level of confidence. Here we have utilized a combination of the latest versions of databases to assign the precise function of HPs for which no experimental information is available. These HPs were found to belong to various classes of proteins such as enzymes, binding proteins, signal transducers, lipoprotein, transporters, virulence and other proteins. Evaluation of the performance of the various computational tools conducted using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and a resoundingly high average accuracy of 93.6% were obtained. Our comprehensive analysis will help to gain greater understanding for the development of many novel potential therapeutic interventions to defeat Shigella infection.

Optimization of process parameters for improved production of biomass protein from Aspergillus niger using banana peel as a substrate

Md. Mostafa Kamal,Md. Rahmat Ali,Mohammad Rezaul Islam Shishir,Md. Saifullah,Md. Raihanul Haque,Shakti Chandra Mondal 한국식품과학회 2019 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.28 No.6

This study was aimed to optimize the processvariables for improved production of biomass protein usingAspergillus niger from banana fruit peel by the use ofresponse surface methodology. A five-level-four factorscentral composite rotatable design was applied to elucidatethe influence of process variables viz. temperature(20–40 C), pH (4–8), substrate concentration (5–25%),and fermentation period (1–5 days) on biomass and proteincontent. The second-order polynomial models were established, which effectively explicated the variation inexperimental data and significantly epitomized theappreciable correlation between independent variables andresponses. After numerical optimization, the predictedoptimum conditions (temperature of 31.02 C, pH of 6.19,substrate concentration of 19.92%, and the fermentationperiod of 4 days) were obtained with biomass of 24.69 g/Land protein of 61.23%, which were verified through confirmatoryexperiments.

Social behavior practices for child protection and well-being among low-income urban households in Bangladesh

        Islam M. Rezaul,Al Gharaibeh Fakir,Azman Azlinda,Hashim Intan H. M.,Islam Md. Robiul,Rahman Abdur 한국사회복지학회 2023 Asian Social Work and Policy Review Vol.17 No.1

The main objective of this study was to explore the status of social behavior practices for child protection and well-being among low-income urban households in Bangladesh. This study used a survey method, and data were collected through a face-to- face structured interview from 378 low-income household heads from 12 wards (Konabari and Kashimpur) of Zone 5 of the Gazipur City Corporation. Results found that the current status of the presence of child protection services is very low (in many cases, this number is zero except children having birth registered). A significant number (55%) of them were married between 15 and 19 years. The study found a low level of access on the components of social behaviors where around 50% to 60% caregivers stated 4 benefits of key behaviors, necessity of hand washing after defecation and before and after taking a meal, the age of boys and girls to get married off, and know the effect and consequences of child marriage. The chi-squared tests confirmed extremely high significance in almost all of the components. Findings will be an important guideline for the policymakers, child service practitioners, and human rights workers.

Role of Abscisic Acid in Thermal Acclimation of Plants

Md. Rezaul Islam; Feng Baohua,Tao Longxing;Fu Guanfu 한국식물학회 2018 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.61 No.5

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a stress hormone thatconfers resistance to abiotic stressors, including drought, salt, cold, and heat. In general, antioxidant capacity andheat shock proteins (HSPs) mainly mediate ABA toenhance thermal acclimation in plants, but sugar metabolismand signaling also play critical roles in this response in thepresence of ABA. Indeed, ABA accelerates sugar metabolismand transports more carbohydrates to spikelets under heatstress, which is beneficial to plants surviving under stressfulconditions. Few studies have summarized the interactionsamong sucrose metabolism, signaling, and hormones inplants during heat stress, but this topic will likely attractmore attention in the future. This article reviews theantioxidant capacity, HSPs, sugar metabolism, hormonecrosstalk, and their interactions involved in ABA-inducedheat tolerance in plants. Clarifying the underlying mechanismswill be invaluable for breeding heat-resistant cultivars andfor developing new tissue culture techniques that reduceheat damage in plants.

Optimization of Spray Drying Parameters for Pink Guava Powder Using RSM

        Mohammad Rezaul Islam Shishir,farah saleenataip,Norashikin Ab. Aziz,rosnita a . talib,Md. Sazzat Hossain Sarker 한국식품과학회 2016 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.25 No.2

The optimization of pink guava was executed using central composite face-centred design to optimize the spray drying parameters of inlet temperature, maltodextrin concentration (MDC) and feed flow (FF). The experimental results were significantly (p<0.01) fitted into second-order polynomial models to describe and predict the response quality in terms of the final moisture, particle size and lycopene with R2 of 0.9749, 0.9616, and 0.9505, respectively. The final moisture content significantly (p<0.01) decreased with increasing inlet temperature and MDC, whereas the particle size increased. In contrast, the lycopene content significantly (p<0.01) decreased with the higher temperature and increased with increasing MDC. However, according to multiple response optimization, the optimum conditions of 150oC inlet temperature, 17.12% (w/v) MDC and 350 mL/h FF-predicted 3.10% moisture content, 11.23 μm particle size and 58.71 mg/100 g lycopene content. The experimental observation satisfied the predicted model within the acceptable range of the responses.

      • Synthesis of core-shell silver–polyaniline nanocomposites by gamma radiolysis method

Karim, Mohammad Rezaul,Lim, Kwon Taek,Lee, Chul Jae,Bhuiyan, Md Tauhidul Islam,Kim, Hee Jin,Park, Lee-Soon,Lee, Mu Sang Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2007 Journal of polymer science Part A, Polymer chemist Vol.45 No.24

Core-shell silver (Ag)–polyaniline (PAni) nanocomposites have been synthesized by the in-situ gamma radiation-induced chemical polymerization method. Aqueous solution of aniline, a free-radical oxidant, and/or silver metal salt were irradiated by γ-rays. Reduction of the silver salt in aqueous aniline leads to the formation of silver nanoparticles which in turn catalyze oxidation of aniline to polyaniline. The resultant Ag-PAni nanocomposites were characterized by using different spectroscopy analyses like X-ray photoelectron, UV–visible, and infrared spectroscopy. The optical absorption bands revealed that the bands at about 400 nm are due to the presence of nanosilver and the blue-shifted peak at ∼ 555 nm is due to the presence of metallic silver within the PAni matrix. X-ray diffraction pattern clearly indicates the broad amorphous polymer and the sharp metal peaks. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy of the nanocomposite showed a uniform size distribution with spherical and granular morphology. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the composites have a higher degradation temperature than polyaniline alone. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 5741–5747, 2007
Graphic Abstract
Inside metal (core) and outside polyaniline (shell) nanocomposites have been synthesized by the in-situ gamma radiation-induced chemical polymerization method. The resultant nanocomposites indicated that no chemical interaction occurred between the metal and polymer, only the metallic silver was encapsulated in the cores of the growing polymer chains, resulting in the formation of core-shell silver–polyaniline (Ag-PAni) hybrid materials. Finally, the Ag-PAni nanocomposites showed improved optical, thermal, and electrical properties compared with the bulk PAni homopolymer.
