      • Occluded Shape Matching for Image Database of Reduced Data Points

Md,Jahangir Alam,Hiromitsu Hama 한국과학기술원 인간친화 복지 로봇 시스템 연구센터 2003 International Journal of Assistive Robotics and Me Vol.4 No.4

We present a new approach to typify object contours in a database by a reduced number of data points and to match object shapes in occluded conditions. For simplicity, contours are approximated by a set of quadratic Bezier curves and all control points are stored in the database. Initial contour segmentation procedure is carried out based on scale space parameters. The scale is chosen imposing the condition that a particular number of curvature zero-crossing points survive on the object contour for a longer period of its changes. Its value is neither too small nor too large so that the influence of noise effects and the loss of important features can be avoided. We introduce the distance matrix, which is constructed from curve to curve distance measurement between the test and database contours. The maximum alignment of distance matrix elements for their verification gives the total cost of similarity between the test and database contours. We present the experimental results to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method and demonstrate the successful performance on object contours containing noise and occlusion.

A Parametric Study of Anchored Earth Wall by Finite Element Method

Md. Jahangir Alam,Md. Saiful Alam Siddiquee 대한토목학회 2014 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.18 No.7

A parametric study using finite element method of analysis was undertaken to investigate the behavior of an anchored earth wall system supporting clay backfill. In this paper the effects of stiffness of reinforcing tendon, elastic modulus of backfill soil, elastic modulus of retained soil and anchor size on the behavior of the wall system are presented. It was observed that deformation of wall decreases with increasing stiffness of reinforcement and above certain value of stiffness it has no effect on deformation. Most important finding was that coefficient of lateral earth pressure depends on the stiffness of reinforcement. For extensible reinforcements (axial strain > 1%), coefficient of lateral earth pressure is less than that of an active pressure condition. Deformation decreases with increasing stiffness of backfill and retained soil. Anchor force also decreases with increasing stiffness of backfill but remains constant with the variation of stiffness of the retained soil. It was also concluded that anchor block may be designed for a factor of safety of 2 or more.

Effects of Tannery Wastes on the Fattening of Growing Cattle, Carcass, and Meat Quality

        Md. Jahangir Alam,Md. Mufazzal Hossain,Md. Anwarul Haque Beg,Ki Chang Nam,Sang Suk Lee 한국축산식품학회 2010 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.30 No.2

The present study was conducted to determine the effect of tannery waste protein concentrate (TWPC) on fattening of cattle and the carcass and meat quality, with the aim of replacing the costly commercial protein concentrate (Jasoprot) with a more economical and effective alternative. Twelve young cattle (six male and six female) were fed during the study period on a control diet (T1) with 10% Jasoprot and on two test diets: 5% TWPC + 5% Jasoprot (T2) and 10% TWPC (T3). The test diets significantly affected (p<0.05) live weight gain and profitability compared to the control diet, perhaps due to the increased protein and essential amino acid content, relative to Jasoprot. TWPC was free of aflatoxin. Sensory-evaluated organoleptic scores did not differ among the groups. Chemical composition was normal as other beef and was non toxic especially within recommended chromium level (1.90±0.6 μg). Total lipid contents were higher (p<0.05) in T3, and moisture, ash and crude protein contents were almost similar (p>0.05) among the three groups. It is concluded that TWPC or an equal mixture of TWPC and Jasoprot may be an economic and efficient alternative protein source to Jasoprot in the cattle industry, which minimizes adverse effects on carcass and sensory meat quality.

      • Influence of Play-based Learning in Early Childhood Education (ECE) in Bangladesh: Lessons from Japan

Md Jahangir Alam The Pacific Early Childhood Education Research Ass 2022 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhoo Vol.16 No.2

Universally, Early Childhood Education (ECE) received considerable attention among the stakeholders, and multiple international studies have emphasized the critical nature of the high-quality ECE facilities that integrate learning and play. Several studies have demonstrated the positive influence of decent learning environments on prospects and the comprehensive development of children. This research focuses on play-based learning through gamification to characterize the excellent ECE environments and provide the importance of play-based learning in Bangladesh. This case study research focuses on the necessities of play-based learning in Bangladesh for ECE development, considering the Japanese experience. This study shows that the absence of children s play and play-based learning in Bangladesh is due to a lack of government policy initiatives and parental socioeconomic situations. A theoretical analysis has been included through Vygotsky’s sociocultural approach to understanding the necessities of play-based learning for the welfare of children in Bangladesh. The findings show that the government policy formulation and stakeholders’ engagement might create the opportunity for establishing play-based learning in ECE.

      • Dilemma of Parental Aspiration for Children with Special Needs in Early Childhood Education (ECE) Settings: The Case of Bangladesh

Md Jahangir Alam 환태평양유아교육연구학회 2019 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhoo Vol.13 No.3

This study explores parental aspiration for children with special needs in Early Childhood Education (ECE) settings in Bangladesh. A social justice theoretical approach framed the design of the research, and data were collected in two locales namely rural and urban areas in Rajshahi Division, Bangladesh. This study followed the case study methods, and findings suggest that there were differences among the rural and urban areas and in parental aspiration, beliefs and practices in ECE in Bangladesh. This article explores how parental aspiration varies for access and enrolment of children with special needs in ECE by exploring parental perspectives in Bangladesh. Many parents with astronomical anticipations for their children in ECE are mostly based on a distinctive mixture of childrearing and social ideals in the Bangladesh context. As an outcome, this study relates considerations of what parents anticipate their children’s enrollment, readiness for schooling, and children’s learning outcomes. Mostly, parental struggles and expectations are closely related to different socio-economic conditions, regions, and children’s gender (transgender and girls) in line with special needs. This study attempts to explore how ECE is positioned within the multifaceted contention of Bangladeshi society where parental aspiration plays a vital role for the schooling of children with special needs.

      • Analysis of methanogenic archaeal communities of rumen fluid and rumen particles from Korean black goats

        GU, Min‐,Jung,ALAM, Md. Jahangir,KIM, Seon‐,Ho,JEON, Che‐,Ok,CHANG, Moon‐,Baek,OH, Young‐,Kyoon,LEE, Sang‐,Cheol,LEE, Sang‐,Suk Blackwell Publishing Asia 2011 Animal science journal Vol.82 No.5

<P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>Molecular diversity of methanogens in the rumen of Korean black goats was investigated with 16S rRNA gene clone libraries using methanogen‐specific primers. The libraries were composed of rumen fluid‐associated methanogens (FAM) and rumen particle‐associated methanogens (PAM) from rumen‐fistulated Korean black goats. Among the 141 clones of the FAM library, the sequences were mostly related to two phyla, the <I>Methanobacteriaceae</I> family (77.3%) and the <I>Thermoplasmatales</I> family (22.7%); and among the 68 clones of the PAM library, sequences were also mainly clustered in the two phyla, the <I>Thermoplasmatales</I> family (63.24%) and the <I>Methanobacteriaceae</I> family (35.29%). Most of the sequenced clones in the two libraries were closely related to uncultured methanogenic archaeon. Quantitative real‐time PCR revealed that PAM (8.97 log 10) had significantly higher (<I>P</I> < 0.01) density of methanogens by the methanogenic 16S rRNA gene copies than FAM (7.57 log 10). The two clone libraries also showed difference in Shannon index (FAM library 1.70 and PAM library 1.59) and Chao 1 estimator (FAM library 18 and PAM library 17 operational taxonomic units). Apparent differences found in the microbial community from the two 16S rRNA gene libraries could be a result of such factors as the chemical and physical nature of the target material surface, types or component of diets, the interaction between the methanogens and other microbes, and age of the experimental goats.</P>
