Control Strategies of Active Power Line Conditioners in Single-Phase Circuits

This paper deals with two control strategies for the active power line conditioners in single-phase circuits. The first one is a constant dc capacitor voltage control based strategy, which is commonly used in the active power line conditioners. Any detection blocks of the fundamental active, reactive, and harmonic components are not necessary in this method. Thus we offer the simplest way to compensate the fundamental reactive and harmonic currents on the source-side. The other is a reactive power control based strategy, which is with the correlation and cross-correlation coefficients between the feeder voltage and load current. Controlling the detected fundamental reactive component with the cross-correlation coefficient on the source-side reduces the capacity of the PWM inverter, which performs the active power line conditioners. The basic principles of the proposed control strategies are discussed in detail, and then applied to the single-phase active power line conditioners in single-phase based distribution systems. These sigle-phase distributin systems are used in the single-phase three-wire systems and electrified railways. The validity and excellent practicability of the proposed control strategies are confirmed by experimental results.
High Accurate Detection of Inclined Cracksin Concrete Structures Using an Acceleration Pickup

The present paper proposes a method for the detection of inclined cracks in concrete using an acceleration pickup. The sensor on the concrete surface observes the stationary wave sinside the structure whose frequencies depend on the distance to the crack. The method can recognize the profile of the in clined crack with a high accuracy by the following two procedures. The 1st procedure: we model the sensor output as an output of alinear dynamic system with an unknown parameter and measure the accurate propagation distance from the sensor to the crack by applying a maximum likelihood method at each in spection point. The 2nd procedure: we apply a least squares method considering the reflection efficiency of the elastic waves at the inclined crack and the directivity characteristic of the sensor.
Chemical Approach for the Synthesis of Homogeneous Large Glycoproteins

Glycoprotiens are responsible in many biological events. However oligosaccharides covalently attached to these proteins always exhibit heterogeneity. This has been a hindrance to investigate what oligosaccharide structure is essential for the individual biological event. Therefore we have examined the chemical synthesis of several glycoproteins such as cytokines consist of 70 to 166 amino acid residues. [1-3] However, glycoproteins used in the cell-cell communication or immune response exhibit larger molecular weight comparing with those of cytokines we have synthesized. Unfortunately, the synthesis of such large and homogeneous glycoproteins is still far from our current achievements, because we have not established an efficient method for the synthesis of large glycoproteins yet. Native chemical ligation[4] is a powerful method to couple two polypeptide chains through a native amide bond. This ligation takes place between peptide-C-terminal thioester and cysteine at the N-terminal of another peptide. Using this ligation between glycopeptide-thioester synthesized by chemical method and long peptide prepared from E. coli expression, we have examined the synthesis of large glycoprotein. In this presentation, we would discuss the first synthesis of large and homogeneous glycosylpolypeptide chain (25 kDa) consists of over 200 amino acid residues.
Synthetic Study of Carbohydrate Binding Domain of Siglec7

Sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin (Siglec) 7 is one of the sialic acid binding protein that plays an important role in immune system. Siglec 7 is expressed on natural killer cells and displays a unique ligand binding properties comparing to the other members of the Siglec family, specifically binds to 2,8-disialyl residues. The precise structural analysis of Siglec 7 has been already performed, and amino acid residues involved in the ligand binding are reported. In such context, we set out the first total chemical synthesis of Siglec 7 carbohydrate binding domain (CBD) which consists of 127 amino acid residues. Since chemical synthesis can easily introduce unnatural amino acids, we envisioned that we could produce an artificial sialic acid binding lectin based on this chemical synthetic strategy. The synthesis of Siglec 7 CBD was carried out by convergent total chemical synthesis. The whole polypeptide was assembled from 5 peptide segments (Figure), which were synthesized by conventional solid phase peptide synthesis. We applied native chemical ligation (NCL) for the coupling of these segments sequentially from C-terminus, combined with alkylation with haloacetoamide or desulfuration reaction. These reactions can provide pseudo-Gln residue or Ala residue from Cys residues at the ligation sites. Based on these strategies we have successfully obtained the full-length polypeptide of Siglec 7 CBD and currently are investigating the in vitro folding step.

This paper proposes a sinusoidal chargingdischarging method of the lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) to reduce the capacitances of the dc-capacitors in the previously proposed smart charger (SC) for electric vehicles (EVs) in single-phase three-wire distribution feeders with power quality compensator. The dc-capacitor current in the three-leg pulse-width-modulated (PWM) rectifier is detected, and then added to the reference value for the output current of the bidirectional dc-dc converter that is used to charge or discharge the LiBs. The addition of the detected dc-capacitor current to the reference value of the bidirectional dc-dc converter achieves the sinusoidal chargingand discharging-operations of the LiBs in EVs. The sinusoidal charging- and discharging-operations sink the voltage ripples in the dc-capacitors of both the PWM rectifier and bidirectional dc-dc converter in the SC. This achieves the substantial reduced dc-capacitors in the SC. The simulation results demonstrate that balanced and sinusoidal source currents with a unity power factor can be achieved reducing the capacitances of dc-capacitors in the SC.

The objective of this study was evaluated the influences of the nitrogen fertilization level on timothy silage fermentation quality, nutritive value, and nutrient intake. In both the first and second crops, high level nitrogen fertilization (H) led to a lower WSC content and higher CP content than standard nitrogen fertilization (S). The silage fermentation quality was good in the presence of a Lactobacillus inoculant (SI and HI) than uninoculant (SC and HC). In the first crop silage, the TDN content and intake were significantly higher (P<0.01) for HI than for SI. In the second silage, the DM, DE, and TDN intakes did not significantly differ among the 4 treatments.
Practice and Evaluation of a Web Bulletin Board Monitoring in Distance Teaching Assistant Program

The aim of this research tries to design a learning support model that includes a teacher who gives a lesson in a school and distance teaching assistants (Distance TAs) who asynchronously support group learners, who are engaged in problem-solving activities in a learning support environment and develop Distance TA’s learning support methods and some tools used in this model. In addition, we aim at designing a Distnce TA’s program in which he/she acquires the ability of distance learning support. In this paper, we describe a framework of the distance learning support model and then explain a function to monitor and activate Web bulletin board among Distance TAs and learner. Furthermore, we describe an educational practice and an evaluation result that used this function.
