Vol.25 No.6

Re‑birthed fashion handbags as a collaborative design project

2018 Fashion and Textiles Vol.5 No.1

The term ‘re-birth’ refers to the redesign of stock items originally released through the distribution route for sale to consumers but returned to headquarters as unsold stock. As a sustainable fashion practice, products are analysed and redeveloped by designers for resale as new products. During this 4-month project, a South Korean handbag company partnered with senior apparel design students in Seoul to execute a re-birth collaboration for fashion handbags. This study addresses some of the issues that arose in the process of interpretation and application of this re-birth exercise, including the relationship between the university and company, the roles of the student designer and company design team, characteristics of the product selected, and the communication required to implement the project. The concept of re-birth was introduced to the students, followed by a collaborative design exercise. Finally, 2 of the 50 re-birth designs were selected by company designers and altered for resale.

Improving Creative Design Skills -The Effects of Past Experience on Apparel Design Education-

Vol.40 No.2

This study explores factors that influence the development of creative ideas among apparel design students. This research is to understand how past experience (especially in art and design), influences the development of creative ideas in apparel design. The interaction between two related elements of student experience and work process is explored. A design process model based on Wallas``s (1926) creative problem-solving process and Koberg and Bagnall``s (1974) design process was used in the context of a beginning-level apparel design course comprised of Korean and Chinese students at a university in Seoul, South Korea. The results show that students with past experience in art and/or design performed differently than inexperienced students when faced with the same stimulation. Significant differences were also observed between experienced and inexperienced students in the development of creative ideas.

What is the Meaning of Black in Korean Traditional Mourning Dress?

Park, Saet Byul,DeLong, Marilyn The Korean Society of Costume 2014 International journal of costume and fashion Vol.14 No.2

The meanings of colors vary with time and space. For the most important events in a person's life, such as wedding or funeral, people use color to symbolize their identities or roles. Traditionally, the colors of dress had indicated the wearer's age, class, or marital status in Korea. However, Korea's exposure to western cultures has affected in many dimensions of its modern history. Especially, influenced by social change, the traditional dress has undergone many modifications in forms, silhouettes, materials, and color. However, women's mourning dress has been maintained as a long lasting tradition and the use of white in mourning dress has been regarded as a norm until recently, while men have worn a regular black suit with a black tie. But, the shift from white to black in mourning dress has been observed in recent mourning practices. To examine this change of color in Korean traditional mourning dress, a historical approach utilizing multiple resources, such as interview, observations of events, documents, and archival records was applied.

Re-Birth Design Analysis for Developing Sustainable Fashion Products

Vol.40 No.3

Sustainability in fashion cannot ignore fashion attributes required for the design of rapidly changing and innovative products. This study examines “Re-Birth Design” development and provides a means to apply academic and industry perspectives to the investigation of Re-Birth fashion product development. This study defines “Re-Birth Design” as stock that has been designed and launched through distribution channels, subsequently returned unused, then improved and reborn into a new product for redistribution. This study analyzed specific cases. We selected 100 designs for Re-Birth from 11 brands of “K” fashion company in Korea, to be successfully sold in 2014. These cases are used in the analysis and are categorized into design types. As a result of the analysis, “Re-Birth Design” had five levels: Level 1. Changes in supplementary materials such as adding or removing decoration, Level 2. Changes in patterns or materials (changes within the product), Level 3. Partial changes in design (leading to a new design), Level 4. Complete deconstruction and rebirth of the design, and Level 5. Complete deconstruction followed by the use of the design source for a new product that is not a garment. This study analyzed products owned by brands, as well as successful cases of Re-Birth designs that reused existing resources, reduced energy consumption, and increased environmental and economic efficiency by recreating new products that could be resold.
