      • Estimation of Leucine Aminopeptidase and 5-Nucleotidase Increases Alpha-Fetoprotein Sensitivity in Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cases

        Purpose: To find parameters that can increase alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) sensitivity and so help in accurate diagnosis and rapid management of hepatocullular carcinoma (HCC), as AFP has limited utility of distinguishing HCC from benign hepatic disorders for its high false-positive and false negative rates. Materials and Methods: Serum levels of AFP, 5'-nucleotidase enzyme activity (5-NU) and leucine aminopeptidase enzyme (LAP) activity were measured in 40 individuals. Results: LAP and 5'NU were elevated in HCC at p<0.001. Pearson correlation coefficients showed that changes in AFP exhibited positive correlation with both 5'-NU and LAP at (p<0.001). The complementary use of LAP only with AFP resulted in an increase in sensitivity of AFP from 75% to 90% in detecting HCC. The complementary use of both LAP and 5-NU with AFP resulted in an increased sensitivity of AFP in detecting HCC from 75% to 95%. Conclusions: LAP and 5-FU can be determined in HCC patients in combination with AFP to improve its sensitivity and decrease false negative results.

        Cellulitis in Broiler Chickens

        Cellulitis in broiler chickens is one of the economically important problems that facing the broiler industry due to the presence of the lesion leads to condemnation of part of /or the entire carcasses. Broiler with cellulitis lesions showed lower body weight. Cellulitis was recorded on different body regions including the head, dorsum, thighs, breast, legs, and abdomen. Cellulitis results from the invasion of subcutaneous (s.c.) tissues by bacteria through disruption of skin integrity. Lesions revealed the existence of the characteristic s.c colored exudate varies from yellowish to green, which were either serosanguineous, fibrinous s.c exudate yellowish, greenish or suppurative. Many bacterial isolates including E. coli, Staphylococci, Clostridia, Aeromonas spp., Enterobacter spp., Proteus mirabilis, P. aeruginosa, and Streptococci were isolated from the lesion. Chickens exposed to immunosuppression proved to have a greater probability of developing cellulitis. The condition was experimentally induced by s.c inoculation of 25-day-old broiler chickens with E. coli, S. aureus and clostridia. Usually, bacterial isolates were multidrug-resistant. The usage of Bifidobacterium bifidum or antibiotic with avoiding immunosuppression can reduce lesion and condemnation rate resulted from cellulitis. The objective of this review is to collect different literature written about cellulitis to be available to students, researchers, and veterinarians in poultry practical.

        Preparation and characterization of ion selective membrane and its application for Cu2+ removal

        Membranes are used in industrial wastewater treatment for the removal and recovery of heavy metals. A persistent challenge in heavy metals removal using membranes is the lack of selectivity for specific target ions, such as the removal and recovery of copper from other metal ions in industrial wastewater. This work reports the preparation of a new Cu(II)-selective ion-imprinted polymeric membrane. Membrane synthesis was conducted by applying an advanced immobilization method which comprises the preparation of polymerizable chelating monomer divinylbenzyl triethylenetetramine (diVB-TETA), the formation of the copper complex Cu-divinylbenzyl triethylenetetramine monomer (diVB-TETA-Cu), the polymerization/cross-linking of diVB-TETA-Cu within the Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) pores to produce a copper-loaded membrane and finally the leaching of the copper (imprinting) from the membrane to produce ion-imprinted PVDF/diVB-TETA-Cu membrane. The chemical, elemental morphological properties of the synthesized ion-imprinted membrane were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning electron microscope coupled with Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR). To assess selective separation of Cu2+ from the mixture of Cu2+ and Ni2+, adsorption at different pH settings and diffusion permeation experiments were carried out. The results show that diVB-TETA-Cu was successfully synthesized and its immobilization through polymerization/cross-linking almost filled all PVDF pores. The PVDF/diVB-TETA-Cu membrane permeation flux ratio of Cu2+:Ni2+ is 3.78. The prepared membrane is suitable for Cu2+ ion selective separation processes.

        Morin alleviates fructose-induced metabolic syndrome in rats via ameliorating oxidative stress, inflammatory and fibrotic markers

        Metabolic syndrome (MBS) is a widespread disease that has strongly related to unhealthy diet and low physical activity, which initiate more serious conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to examine the therapeutic effects of morin, as one of the flavonoids constituents, which widely exists in many herbs and fruits, against some metabolic and hepatic manifestations observed in MBS rats and the feasible related mechanisms. MBS was induced in rats by high fructose diet feeding for 12 weeks. Morin (30 mg/kg) was administered orally to both normal and MBS rats for 4 weeks. Liver tissues were used for determination of liver index, hepatic expression of glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) as well as both inflammatory and fibrotic markers. The fat/muscle ratio, metabolic parameters, systolic blood pressure, and oxidative stress markers were also determined. Our data confirmed that the administration of morin in fructose diet rats significantly reduced the elevated systolic blood pressure. The altered levels of metabolic parameters such as blood glucose, serum insulin, serum lipid profile, and oxidative stress markers were also reversed approximately to the normal values. In addition, morin treatment decreased liver index, serum liver enzyme activities, and fat/muscle ratio. Furthermore, morin relatively up-regulated GLUT2 expression, however, down-regulated NF-κB, TNF-α, and TGF-β expressions in the hepatic tissues. Here, we revealed that morin has an exquisite effect against metabolic disorders in the experimental model through, at least in part, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic mechanisms.

        Chemical Constituents and Biological Activities of Cichorium intybus L.

        Continuation of a phytochemical study of Cichorium intybus L. (Astraceae) growing in Egypt, resulted in the isolation and identification of a new sesquiterpene lactone 3, 4-dihydrolactucin, in addition to the eight known compounds; kaempferol, isoscutellarin, cichoriin, umbelliferone, lupeol, lupeol acetate, β-sitosterol, and β-sitosterol-3-O-glucoside. Chemical structures of the isolated compounds were assigned based on different physical, chemical, and spectroscopic techniques including IR, UV, MS, 1D- and 2D-NMR spectra. Furthermore, the antimicrobial, and spasmogenic activities of some fractions and isolates were also assessed.

        Exact Spin Coherent State Path Integral for a Neutral Spinning Particle Interacting with a Helical Magnetic Field

        Exact solutions for a neutral spinning particle interacting with a helical magnetic field have been found by using a path integral formalism. The propagator is first written in the standard form ∫D(path)expi/ħS(path) by replacing the spin by unit vectors aligned along the polar and azimuthal directions (θ,φ). Then, we use the phase space and rotations in the space of spin coherent states to simplify the calculations. Thus, the exact energy spectra with corresponding wave functions are deduced.

        Experimental and Numerical Simulation of Solar Still for the Production of Drinking Water in Desert Areas of Southern Algeria

        Solar distillation is a simple method used for the production of drinking water from saline or brackish water. This method proposes a solution for the production of fresh water in arid and desert areas, where a large solar field is available and also the existence of underground sources of saline water. A solar distiller with a single basin and double slopes is theoretically examined. The theoretical model is based on the resolution of equations of heat and mass transfer dependent on time for glazing cover, water film and absorber basin. For validating the results of the theoretical model, a comparison with the experimental results was carried out. A series of experimental tests on a solar distiller with double slopes in the climatic conditions of Ouargla in Algeria were performed. The tests were carried out on 19th February 2009. The amount of water distilled was 2.7 liters, after a day's work. The results show that the cooling of the glazing cover leads to increase in the amount of distilled water of about 17% in comparison with the reference case. In addition, we found a good agreement between the results of the theoretical model and the experimental data.

        Liberalization, Regulatory Delays and Vulnerability to Systemic Banking Crisis

        This work aims at contributing to the improvement of the early warning systems of banking crises using a new approach accounting for model uncertainty. We show that a multinomial logit model based on Bayesian model averaging (BMA) is a good strategy to predict banking crisis. To do this, we argue that differences in vulnerability to banking crisis can be largely explained by an asymmetry between financial market evolution and regulation update on a sample of 49 developed and developing countries between 1980 and 2010. When markets are liberalized, competition pushes bankers to take more risks and take advantage of regulatory delays thus increasing crises probabilities. Our empirical evidence supports that crisis probability is higher in country liberalizing their banking system when regulation is not updated. We developed an early warning system for systemic banking crises based on the multinomial logit model. Its main difference to existing prediction models and its contribution to the literature is that it is intended to identify and resolve what is called by Bussiere and Fratzscher [(2006). Towards a new early warning system of financial crises. Journal of International Money and Finance, 25(6), 953–973] as post-crisis bias in binomial models and to develop a new methodology of leading indicators selection based on BMA. Overall, our model predicts all banking crises during our sample period.
