      • <i>Arabidopsis</i> glucan synthase-like 10 functions in male gametogenesis

        <P><B>Summary</B></P><P>Callose or <I>β</I>-1,3-glucan performs multiple functions during male and female gametophyte development. Callose is synthesized by 12 members of the glucan synthase-like (GSL) gene family in <I>Arabidopsis thaliana</I>. To elucidate the biological roles of <I>Arabidopsis</I> GSL family members during sexual development, we initiated a reverse genetic approach with T-DNA insertional mutagenesis lines. We screened T-DNA insertion lines for all members of the GSL gene family and detected homozygous mutant seedlings for all members except <I>GSL10</I>. Three independent alleles in <I>GSL10</I>, <I>gsl10-1</I>, <I>gsl10-3</I> and <I>gsl10-4</I> showed distorted segregation (1:1:0) of T-DNA inserts rather than Mendelian segregation (1:2:1). By genetic analysis through reciprocal cross, we determined that <I>gsl10</I> pollen could not be transmitted to descendent. The mutant pollen of <I>GSL10</I>/<I>gsl10</I> plants at tetrad and microspore stages were not different from that of wild type, suggesting that <I>GSL10</I> is not essential for normal microspore growth. Analysis of <I>GSL10</I>/<I>gsl10</I> hemizygous pollen during development revealed abnormal function in asymmetric microspore division. <I>gsl10</I> mutant microspores failed to enter into mitosis. Unlike the previously described functions of <I>GSL1</I>, <I>GSL2</I> and <I>GSL5</I>, <I>GSL10</I> involves an independent process of pollen development at the mitotic division stage.</P>

        Tune Metal Ion Selectivity by Changing Working Solvent: Fluorescent and Colorimetric Recognition of Cu2+ by a Known Hg2+ Selective Probe

        A known Hg2+ selective rhodamine B derivatised probe 1 was reinvestigated as a colorimetric and fluorescent probe for Cu2+ through changing the applied solvent media. Probe 1 exhibited good selectivity and sensitivity to Cu2+ in CH3CN-H2O (7:3, v/v, HEPES 10 mM, pH 7.0) solution with a detection limit of 9.74 × 10−7 M. The Cu2+ sensing event was proved to be irreversible through hydrolysis of 1 to release rhodamine B.

        Primary Carnitine Deficiency and Cardiomyopathy

        Carnitine is essential for the transfer of long-chain fatty acids from the cytosol into mitochondria for subsequent β-oxidation. A lack of carnitine results in impaired energy production from long-chain fatty acids, especially during periods of fasting or stress. Primary carnitine deficiency (PCD) is an autosomal recessive disorder of mitochondrial β-oxidation resulting from defective carnitine transport and is one of the rare treatable etiologies of metabolic cardiomyopathies. Patients affected with the disease may present with acute metabolic decompensation during infancy or with severe cardiomyopathy in childhood. Early recognition of the disease and treatment with L-carnitine may be life-saving. In this review article, the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of PCD are discussed, with a focus on cardiac involvements.

        Optimal Dispatch for a Combined Cooling, Heating and Power Microgrid Considering Building Virtual Energy Storage

        Because buildings have certain heat capacity, when the thermal power changes, the indoor temperature has a relative lag of change, while the feeling to comfortable temperature of the human body lies within a certain range. Based on the energy storage characteristics of buildings, this paper structures the optimal dispatch model of a combined cooling, heating, and power system (CCHP) and the virtual energy storage system (VESS) is integrated into the model of optimizing schedule on microgrid. This will achieve the charge and discharge management of microgrid virtual energy storage system, with the optimization objectives of minimizing the economic, environmental and energy indexes through determining the weight coeffi cient of each index by analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and through the adjustment of the indoor temperature of the building within the range of human comfort. Finally, taking the summer refrigeration scenario as an example and comparing two microgrids of two types of buildings with or without virtual energy storage, this paper concludes that compared with traditional optimization dispatching methods, the combined cooling, heating, and power optimization dispatching method adopting virtual energy storage fully excavates the potential of the buildings’ virtual storage and every aspect has been improved in terms of economy, environment and energy.

        NiCoSe4@CFF with excellent properties prepared by microwave method for flexible supercapacitors and oxygen evolution reaction

        NiCoSe4 nanoflowers were synthesized on carbon fiber felt (CFF) by microwave method, and the effects ofmicrowave time and microwave power on the morphology, physical phase and performance ofNiCoSe4@CFF were explored. The results display that the nanostructured NiCoSe4 prepared under themicrowave irradiation of 1000 W for 120 s is uniformly loaded on the CFF. The NiCoSe4@CFF electrodeexhibits a superior specific capacity of 1653.6F g1 at 1A/g and maintains a superior cycling performanceof 87.05 % of the initial capacitance over 150,000 cycles. In addition, the flexible supercapacitor fabricatedwith NiCoSe4@CFF as the cathode exhibits excellent flexibility and flexural strength. As an effective catalystfor oxygen evolution reaction (OER), NiCoSe4@CFF demonstrates a low overpotential of 0.358 V, arelatively small Tafel slope of 115.93 mV dec1 and an excellent lifetime at 10 mA cm2.

        A New Quinoline-Based Acylhydrazone for Highly Selective Fluorescence Recognition of Cu(II) and Sulfide in Aqueous Solution

        A new quinoline-based acylhydrazone (1) has been synthesized and applied as a fluorescent probe. Probe 1 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to $Cu^{2+}$ with fluorescence "ON-OFF" behavior in HEPES buffered (1‰ DMSO, HEPES 20 mM, pH = 7.4) solution. The on-site generated 1-$Cu^{2+}$ complex displays excellent selectivity to sulfide ions with fluorescence "OFF-ON" performance through copper displacement approach.

        A Quinoline-thiooxorhodamine Conjugate for Fluorescent Hg<sup>2+</sup> Recognition in Aqueous Media and Living Cells

        A quinoline-thiooxorhodamine conjugate fluorescent sensor (1) has been synthesized. Sensor 1 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to $Hg^{2+}$ in $H_2O$/DMSO (95/5, v/v, HEPES 20 mM, pH = 7.4) solution with fluorescence detection. Other tested metal ions do not induce any significant fluorescence intensity changes. Sensor 1 interacts with $Hg^{2+}$ through a 1:1 binding stoichiometry with a good anti-inference ability. In addition, fluorescent imaging of $Hg^{2+}$ in Hela cells is also successfully demonstrated.

        Association Between Metabolic Risk Factors and Cognitive Impairment in Schizophrenia Based on Sex

        Objective Sex differences have been observed in many aspects of schizophrenia, including cognitive deficits. Despite extensive research into the relationship between metabolic factors and cognitive deficits in schizophrenia, few studies have explored the potential sex difference in their association. Methods We recruited 358 schizophrenia patients and 231 healthy controls. The participants underwent measurements of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose. Metabolic risk factors included abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia. A collection of these metabolic risk factors has been defined as metabolic syndrome. These diagnoses were based on the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel III. Cognitive performance was measured using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). A descriptive analysis, difference analysis, and linear regression model were used to identify the metabolic risk factors for cognitive function in schizophrenia. Results Our findings revealed sex differences in the rate of abdominal obesity and hypertension in schizophrenic patients. Additionally, we observed sex differences in the association between metabolic risk factors and cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Specifically, hyperglycemia was associated with the immediate memory index score of RBANS in male patients, while dyslipidemia was associated with language, attention, delayed memory index scores, and RBANS total score in female patients. Conclusion Our results suggest that sex should be considered when evaluating the impact of metabolic disorders on the cognitive function of schizophrenic patients. Moreover, our study identifies hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia as potential targets for precise treatment by sex stratification, which could benefit the improvement of cognitive impairment in schizophrenic patients.

        Synthesis and Characterization of Folic Acid Labeled Upconversion Fluorescent Nanoprobes for in vitro Cancer Cells Targeted Imaging

        Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are widely used in the field of biomedicine, such as biosensing, cell labeling and medical multimodal imaging because of their unique optical properties. In this paper, we demonstrated the synthesis of polyethylenimine-modified NaLuF4:Yb,Er (RE = Lu 0.78, Yb 0.18, Er 0.02) UCNPs in three different solvents, such as water, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol. The as-prepared UCNPs were characterized and the experimental results showed that the UCNPs synthesized in ethylene glycol had excellent properties. The obtained UCNPs in ethylene glycol had the smallest particle size and uniform size distribution, and the pure cubic phase of crystallization and Dynamic light scattering and particle dispersion index (DLS/Pdi) were the smallest. What's more, the upconversion fluorescence intensity was 7 and 52 times greater than that of UCNPs synthesized in diethylene glycol and water, respectively. In addition, the factors of reaction solvent that had an impact on the particle size, morphology, crystalline phase, DLS and upconversion fluorescence intensity of the synthesized UCNPs were discussed. Moreover, in order to obtain the targeted nanoprobe, we used an EDC/NHS covalent coupling method to modify folic acid to the NaLuF4:Yb,Er/PEI UCNP surface. The NaLuF4:Yb, Er/PEI–FA upconversion fluorescent nanoprobes had low cytotoxicity and were suitable for the application in HeLa cells targeted fluorescent imaging.
