The aim of this study was to investigate how patterns of lymph nodes recurrence after radical surgery impact on survival of patients with pT1-3N0M0 thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. One hundred eighty consecutive patients with thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma underwent radical surgery, and the tumors were staged as pT1-3N0M0 by postoperative pathology. Lymph nodes recurrence was detected with computed tomography 3-120 months after the treatment. The patterns of lymph nodes recurrence including stations, fields and locations of recurrent lymph nodes, and impacts on patterns of survival were statistically analyzed. There was a decreasing trend of overall survival with increasing stations or fields of postoperative lymph nodes involved (all P<0.05). Univariate analysis showed that stations or fields of lymph nodes recurrence, and abdominal or cervical lymph nodes involved were prognostic factors for survival(all P<0.05). Cox analyses revealed that the field was an independent factor (P<0.05, odds ratio=2.73). Lymph nodes involved occurred predominantly in cervix and upper mediastinum (P<0.05). In conclusion, patterns of lymph node recurrence especially the fields of lymph nodes involved are significant prognostic factors for survival of patients with pT1-3N0M0 thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
Size effect in transverse mechanical behavior of one-dimensional nanostructures
Li, Xian-Fang,Wang, Bao-Lin,Tang, Guo-Jin,Lee, Kang Yong Elsevier 2011 Physica E, Low-dimensional systems & nanostructure Vol.44 No.1

Abstract

This paper develops the classical strain gradient elasticity theory to investigate the scale-dependent mechanical behavior of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures. A governing differential equation with two scale parameters is derived, where the curvature of the deflection and the higher-order bending moment are introduced as a pair of additional geometrical constraint and natural loading. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of bending deformation, free vibration and buckling of cantilever nanowires or free-standing nanocolumns. Obtained results are compared with experimental data of carbon nanotube ropes and nanowires available in the literature and they agree well, showing that transverse mechanical properties of nanowires such as bending stiffness are scale-dependent. The model proposed also indicates that the evaluated natural frequencies and critical buckling strains exhibit noticeable size effects. Bending stiffness, natural frequency and buckling load increase as the nanowire diameter drops down. The influence of rotary inertia of cross-section is also analyzed.

Highlights

► A governing equation for bending dynamics of nanowires is established. ► Reduced Young's modulus is scale-dependent for the radius of gyration in nano-order. ► The computed natural frequencies become larger than those of their counterparts in large scale. ► Buckling load or critical strain is enhanced for nanowires with small diameter. ► Theoretical predictions are in consistency with experimental findings.

Drosophila melanogaster heat shock protein 70 gene promoter (Dhsp70p) is widely used in transgenic insect to drive exogenous gene, and the homologous region 3 from Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPVhr3) functions as an enhancer for several promoters. To test whether BmNPVhr3 can enhance the Dhsp70ps transcriptional activity, the reporter plasmids, which contain the Dhsp70p, the reporter $\beta$-galactosidase gene with SV40 terminator and BmNPVhr3 fragment, are constructed and transfected into the insect cell lines (Bm-N cells and Sf-21 cells) by lipofectin-mediated method. The results from the transient expression assay show that BmNPVhr3 significantly increases transcriptional activity of Dhsp70p both under the normal condition and under the heat-shock treatment, although the effects are significantly different between in Bm-N cells and in sf-21 cells. The enhancing behavior of BmNPVhr3 on the Dhsp70p is in an orientation-independent manner. Meanwhile, the effects of heat-shock treatment on Dhsp70p alone or Dhsp70p/BmNPVhr3 combination present no significant difference, indicating that BmNPVhr3 only enhances the transcriptional activity of Dhsp70p, but cant alter its characteristic of the response to the heat-shock stress. The above results suggest that the Dhsp70p/BmNPVhr3 combination is more effective one to drive exogenous gene for transgene or stable cell expression system in insects.

Background: Primary vaginal yolk sac tumor is a rare malignancy in the pediatric population, and a diagnostic challenge and appropriate initial treatment remains unsolved. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathologic features, treatment and prognosis of this tumor. Materials and Methods: Eight cases of primary vaginal yolk sac tumor were reported with a literature review. Results: There were 4 pure yolk sac tumor cases and four mixed germ cell tumors containing yolk sac tumor element, including two cases with embryonal carcinoma and two cases with embryonal carcinoma and dysgerminoma. Partial vaginectomy was performed in four cases and all patients received chemotherapy. 85 cases in literatures were reviewed and 9 cases were misdiagnosed. Follow-up data was available in 77 cases and 5-year overall survival rate was 87.6%. 5-year survival rate of biopsy with chemotherapy, conservative surgery with chemotherapy and radical surgery with chemotherapy was 91.1%, 100% and 28.6%, respectively (p<0.001). Compared to cases without relapse or metastasis after initial treatment, patients with relapse or metastasis had a shorter overall survival (35.6% vs 96.6%, p<0.001). Conclusions: Mixed germ cell tumor containing yolk sac tumor element was not uncommon and partial vaginectomy may be a good choice for primary vaginal mixed yolk sac tumor type to eradicate local tumor cells and provide complete information for pathological diagnosis and postoperative adjuvant therapy.

Purpose: To investigate whether treatment with low-energy shock wave (LESW) alleviates pain and bladder dysfunction in a mouse model of uroplakin 3A (UPK3A)-induced interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS). Materials and Methods: Forty female BALB/c mice were divided into four groups (n=10/group): Sham, Sham+LESW, UPK3A, and UPK3A+LESW. At 6 weeks of age, mice were injected with an emulsion containing water and complete Freund's adjuvant with (UPK3A and UPK3A+LESW groups) or without (Sham and Sham+LESW groups) 200 µg of UPK3A. At 10 weeks, mice received a second dose of Freund's adjuvant to booster immunization. At 12 weeks, mice underwent pain assessment and a frequency volume chart (FVC) test as the pretreatment assessment. LESW treatment and pain assessment were conducted from 13 to 15 weeks. One week after the final treatment, pain assessment and the FVC were conducted again as the post-treatment assessment. Mice were euthanized and sacrificed at 17 weeks. Results: The presence of tactile allodynia and bladder dysfunction was significant in the UPK3A-injected mice. LESW raised the pain threshold and improved bladder function with decreased urinary frequency and increased mean urine output. Expression and secretion of local and systemic inflammatory markers, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and nerve growth factor (NGF), increased after UPK3A immunization. These markers were significantly decreased after LESW treatment (p<0.05). Conclusions: LESW treatment attenuated pain and bladder dysfunction in a UPK3A-induced model of IC/PBS. Local and systemic inflammation was partially controlled, with a reduced number of infiltrated inflammatory cells and reduced levels of TNF-α and NGF.
Current Self-Balancing Mechanism in ZVS Full-Bridge Converters
Hongchang Li,Michael A. de Rooij,Jingyang Fang,Haoxin Yang,Yi Tang 전력전자학회 2019 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.2019 No.5
Full-bridge converters are widely used in isolated dc-dc conversion and wireless power transfer systems. A full-bridge converter can operate in zero-voltageswitching (ZVS) mode with the assistance of an inductive branch that connects the two switch nodes in parallel with the load. The inductive branch provides a ZVS current and has a very low resistance. A tiny volt-second imbalance between the switch nodes may cause a large current bias on the branch. However, it can be demonstrated experimentally that the current on the branch can be almost self-balanced without any dc blocking capacitor or balancing control. This paper quantitatively studies the current self-balancing mechanism and shows that the dead-time switch-node voltage can give a strong negative feedback effect that pushes the current bias toward zero. Experimental verification was carried out on a gallium-nitride device-based converter.

Herein, a series of lasiokaurin derivatives were designed and synthesized. All the derivatives together with lasiokaurin and oridonin were tested for their antimicrobial and antiproliferative activity. Compound 16 showed the most promising antimicrobial activity with MICs of 2.0 and 1.0 lg/mL against Gram-Positive bacteria S. aureus and B. subtilis, respectively. All the synthetic lasiokaurin derivatives showed better antiproliferative activity than parent compound lasiokaurin 1. Compound 10 exhibited the strongest cytotoxicity with IC50 values of 0.47 and 0.20 lM against MGC-803 and CaEs-17 cells, accordingly. Moreover, it was shown to have potent antitumor activity in vivo in a murine model of MGC-803 gastric cancer. Preliminary SARs were also concluded based on obtained data. The apoptosis-inducing effects of 10 were further investigated using CaEs-17 cells. The results showed that lasiokaurin derivative 10 could induce apoptosis via mitochondria related pathway and arrest CaEs-17 cell cycle at S phase. Compound 10 could also affect apoptosisrelated proteins that was up-regulation of CDK2 and downregulation of ATM and cyclin A1.
