        A new species and a new record subspecies of the genus Euops Schoenherr(Coleoptera: Attelabidae) from China

        A new species, Euops pseudlespedezae Li. sp. nov., is described from China, which was collected from Tianqiaoling, in the Jilin Province of China. The new species is closely related to Euops lespedezae lespedezae Sharp, which was also recorded for the first time in China.         Phthalocyanines as medicinal photosensitizers: Developments in the last five years

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Owing to their high extinction coefficients, long absorption wavelengths, and modification tunable photophysical and photochemical properties, phthalocyanines (Pcs) have been widely used as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT).       • Development of the ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Recognizing the value of open-source research databases in advancing the art and science of HVAC, in 2014 the ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II project was launched under the leadership of University of California at Berkeley's Center for the Built Environment and The University of Sydney's Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Laboratory. The exercise began with a systematic collection and harmonization of raw data from the last two decades of thermal comfort field studies around the world. The ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II (Comfort Database), now an online, open-source database, includes approximately 81,846 complete sets of objective indoor climatic observations with accompanying “<I>right-here-right-now</I>” subjective evaluations by the building occupants who were exposed to them. The database is intended to support diverse inquiries about thermal comfort in field settings. A simple web-based interface to the database enables filtering on multiple criteria, including building typology, occupancy type, subjects' demographic variables, subjective thermal comfort states, indoor thermal environmental criteria, calculated comfort indices, environmental control criteria and outdoor meteorological information. Furthermore, a web-based interactive thermal comfort visualization tool has been developed that allows end-users to quickly and interactively explore the data.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The scope, development, contents, and accessibility of the Comfort Database is documented. </LI> <LI> The Comfort Database II includes approximately 76,000 complete sets of thermal comfort data. </LI> <LI> The Comfort Database provides access to the collected raw data. </LI> <LI> Web-based interactive visualization tool was developed that allows end-users to interactively explore the data. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Pd core-shell alloy catalysts for high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells: Effect of the core composition on the activity towards oxygen reduction reactions

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Pd-based core-shell alloy-supported catalysts were prepared sequentially via a microwave-assisted polyol method and galvanic replacement. To investigate the effect of the core composition on the catalytic activity of such catalysts, three different Pd alloy cores (PdNi, PdCu, and PdNiCu) were prepared on carbon supports using a polyol method. Then, Pd and Ir were introduced simultaneously to form shells on the Pd alloy cores by galvanic replacement in aqueous solution, thereby producing catalysts designated as PdNi@PdIr/C, PdCu@PdIr/C, and PdNiCu@PdIr/C. X-ray diffraction revealed that all three catalysts exhibited the face-centered cubic structure of Pd without the presence of individual phases for Ni, Cu, and Ir. The core-shell structure of the Pd-based alloy nanoparticles on the carbon support was verified by the electron energy loss spectroscopy line profile of a 25 nm nanoparticle of PdNiCu@PdIr/C. Among the three Pd-based core-shell catalysts, the highest electrochemical surface area and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity was observed for PdNiCu@PdIr/C. In addition, the membrane electrode assembly employing the PdNiCu@PdIr/C catalyst displayed a significantly improved voltage compared to the other two catalysts under high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell conditions at 150 °C. Single-cell durability tests conducted to measure the voltage change at a constant current density of 0.2 A cm<SUP>−2</SUP> showed a decay ratio of 12.3 μV h<SUP>−1</SUP>. These results suggest that the composition of the core in core-shell nanoparticles has an important influence on both the electronic properties in the Pd alloy core and compressive lattice strain on the PdIr shell.         Fibulin2: a negative regulator of BMSC osteogenic differentiation in infected bone fracture healing

        Bone fracture remains a common occurrence, with a population-weighted incidence of approximately 3.21 per 1000. In addition, approximately 2% to 50% of patients with skeletal fractures will develop an infection, one of the causes of disordered bone healing. Dysfunction of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) plays a key role in disordered bone repair. However, the specific mechanisms underlying BMSC dysfunction caused by bone infection are largely unknown. In this study, we discovered that Fibulin2 expression was upregulated in infected bone tissues and that BMSCs were the source of infection-induced Fibulin2. Importantly, Fibulin2 knockout accelerated mineralized bone formation during skeletal development and inhibited inflammatory bone resorption. We demonstrated that Fibulin2 suppressed BMSC osteogenic differentiation by binding to Notch2 and inactivating the Notch2 signaling pathway. Moreover, Fibulin2 knockdown restored Notch2 pathway activation and promoted BMSC osteogenesis; these outcomes were abolished by DAPT, a Notch inhibitor. Furthermore, transplanted Fibulin2 knockdown BMSCs displayed better bone repair potential in vivo. Altogether, Fibulin2 is a negative regulator of BMSC osteogenic differentiation that inhibits osteogenesis by inactivating the Notch2 signaling pathway in infected bone.

        Antidiabetic Effect of the Chrysobalanus icaco L. Aqueous Extract in Rats

        Chrysobalanus icaco L. is a medicinal plant popularly known in Brazil as ‘‘Grageru’’ or ‘‘Abageru.’’ It is used in African and American continents as medicinal food in the treatment of several diseases, including diabetes. This study used phytochemical screening to determine the antioxidant and α-amylase inhibitor activities of the aqueous extract (AECI) of C. icaco, and evaluated its antidiabetic potential in rodents. Phytochemical screening was performed using colorimetric tests with specific reagents. The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by the scavenging activity of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picril-hydrazyl. The lethality test and behavioral screening was performed using an oral administration of 5 g/kg of AECI. The antidiabetic potential of AECI was evaluated through the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and chronic hypoglycemic test at the doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg (orally). Metformin was used as a reference drug in all tests. Diabetes was induced by injection of alloxan (40 mg/kg; intravenously). Phytochemical screening showed the presence of various compounds, including tannins, flavones, triterpenoids, steroids, saponins, and alkaloids. The in vitro antioxidant test demonstrated that AECI presented potent antioxidant activity. The lethality test and behavioral screening did not show lethality signs. In the OGTT test, AECI administration was not able to inhibit the elevation of glycemia. However, chronically administrated, it was able to cause a significant (P < .05) reduction of glycemia from 335 ± 27 up to 197 ± 15 mg/dL. These results demonstrate that the AECI presents a potential beneficial effect for diabetes.

        Identification of six heat shock protein 70 genes in Lasioderma serricorne (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) and their responses to temperature stress

        Heat shock proteins (HSPs) play essential roles in stress tolerance in insects, such as the cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne, which is an important pest of stored products. However, the function of HSPs in envi ronmental stress response in L. serricorne is poorly understood. In this study, six cDNAs encoding putative HSP70s were identified in L. serricorne (LsHSP70-1 to LsHSP70-6). The LsHSP70 proteins identified have signature motifs of insect HSP70s and exhibit high amino-acid identity with their respective orthologs from other insect species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these LsHSP70s fall into three major clans: HSP70 in the cytosol (four genes), endoplasmic reticulum (one gene), and mitochondria (one gene). LsHSP70 genes are differentially expressed in different developmental stages. LsHSP70-4 and LsHSP70-5 are mainly expressed at the larval stage, while LsHSP70-3 shows the highest level at the pupal stage. The other genes are ubiquitously expressed. Furthermore, the expression levels of LsHSP70-1 and LsHSP70-4 are significantly upregulated upon exposure to temperatures of both 0 and 15 ◦ C, while LsHSP70-3 is inducible at 15 ◦ C and LsHSP70-6 at 0 ◦ C. In addition, treatment at 0 ◦ C causes significant downregulation of LsHSP70-2 and LsHSP70-3. Exposure to a temperature of 30 ◦ C upregulates LsHSP70-1 expression, while 35 and 40 ◦ C treatments result in significantly enhanced transcription of all the LsHSP70 genes. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report on the sequence characteristics, phylogenetic relationships, and expression profiles of HSP70 genes in L. serricorne. The cold- and heat-inducible regulation of LsHSP70s suggests that these genes are related to tolerance of abnormal temperatures.

        Two new compounds, 2, 3, 5-trimethyl-6-(3-oxobutan-2-yl)-4H-pyran-4-one (1) and (2R)-2, 3- dihydro-7-hydroxy-6, 8-dimethyl-2-[(E)-prop-1-enyl] chromen-4-one (2), together with six known compounds (3-8), were isolated from a deep-sea fungus, identified as Aspergillus sydowi, by a bioassay-guided method. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and the cytotoxicities were evaluated by SRB method.

        Four Butenolides are Novel Cytotoxic Compounds Isolated from the Marine-Derived Bacterium, Streptoverticillium luteoverticillatum 11014

        Four known butenolides were isolated from the ethyl acetate extracts of the culture broth of the marine-derived bacterium, Streptoverticillium luteoverticillatum, by bioassay-guided fractionation. The structures were identified on the basis of spectral data. The absolute configuration of compound (1) was determined by CD spectrum for the first time. Compounds 1-4 showed in vitro cytotoxicity against the murine lymphoma P388 and human leukemia K562 cell lines. This is the first report on the isolation of butenolides from the marine bacterium, Streptoverticillium luteoverticillatum, and their cytotoxic activities.
