        Although numerous studies have shown that cadmium disturbs the normal biological processes in central nervous system the mechanism of toxicity is not well understood The present study has investigated the effect of cadmium on oxidative stress, Na+/K- ATPase activity and the aggregation of amyloid beta peptide(β-amylotd) in neuronal cell Ime, HT22 cell LC_(5) and LC_(50) of cadmium for HT22 cell resulted from MTT assay was 4 1 μM and 9 5 μM, respectively Cadmium(2 to 8 μM) dose-dependently increased the lipid peroxidation and decreased the content of glutathione Cadmium 4 μM showed a significant decrease in Na^(-)/K^(+) ATPase activity as compared with control group The aggregation of P-amyloid was accelerated in a dose-dependent manner by the treatment with 2 to 8 μM cadmium These results suggest that the neurotoxicity of cadmium can be mediated by the increase in oxidative stress and decrease in Na^(-)/K^(+) ATPase activity.

        톨루엔을 포함한 유기용제의 직업적 폭로로 인한 신경내분비계 영향

        Long term occupational exposure to solvent mixtures may cause adverse effects to the central nervous system with neurobehavioral symptoms. And some organic slovents have been suggested to cause impairment of tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic activity and neurochemical mechanisms controlling pituitary secretion. For the purpose of assessing neuroendocrine effects in occupational solvents exposure, hormonal study settings (shoes-manufacturing industry & fishing products industry) and compared with nonexposed controls(33 men, 85 women). Male workers exposed to solvent mixtures had significantly lower plasma level of follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) than nonexposed male controls. While female workers exposed to solvent mixtures had significantly lower plasma levels of growth hormone(GH), and thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH) than nonexposed female controls. The results of significant decrease in plasma concentrations of pituitary hormones(FSH, GH, and TSH) in workers exposed solvent mixtures indicate that occupational exposure to solvent mixtures may induce neuroendocrine effects through an effect on hypothalamic pituitary axis.

        상수 원수에 따른 용존 유기물의 특성 평가

        This study was carried out to evaluate the characteristics of dissolved organics based on their origins, which were divided into two categories. The first group consisted of river, lake and secondary sewage treatment effluent, which were chosen as representative of their origins. The second group were artificial samples which were made of AHA(Aldrich humic acids) and WHA(Wako humic acids). Physicochemical characteristics, biological degradability and THMFP(trihalomethane formation potential) of the samples were analysed based on the AMWD(apparent molecular weight distribution). Large portion of dissolved organic carbon(DOC) in the river and lake samples was comprised of LMW(low molecular weight), while that of AHA and WHA was HMW(high molecular weight). The DOC of the lake was evenly distributed in the all range of molecular weight. The river, lake and secondary treated effluent have lower ultraviolet(UV) absorbance at 254nm, and have a higher amount of humic acids. Higher absorbance of humic acids means that aliphatic bond and benzenoid type components that absorb UV light were contained in these kind of humic acids. It was expected that lake sample was the most biodegradable in the different samples investigated, and in order of secondary sewage treatment effluent, river, WHA and AHA based on the result of determination of specific ultraviolet absorbance(SUVA). Biodegradability showed similar result except for ABA, while dissolved organics in the range of LMW decreased during the biodegradability test, and on the contrary those of HMW increased. Production of the SMPs(soluble microbial products) was observed during humicification of dissolved organics and the SMPs were in the range of 0.7∼5.5% of DOC which was the lowest value. Sample had a higher portion of HMW showed a higher production of the SMPs. THM formation was high in the samples containing HMW and similar tendency was shown in the THMFP(trihalomethane formation potential), except for WHA.

        The cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) are an important component in host defense mechanism against viral infection. They can recongnize virus-derived peptides presented by the Class I MHC molecule at the cell surface of the infected cells. On searching for effective CTL epitopes of hepatitis B virus(HBV), we synthesized a distinct set of 9-10 mer peptide containing amino acid sequence of hepatitis B virus surface protein that are selected on the basis of a computer modeling and the previously described HLA-A2 specific motifs.Binding assay of the synthetic peptides to HLA-A2 molecules using human antigen processing defectant T2 cells showed that 3 out of 4 synthetic peptides enhanced the expression of HLA-A2 molecule on T2 cell surface.Two anchor positions, namely P2 and P9(or P10) appeared to play a decisive role for binding.Structural. characteristics of the peptides addressed by molecular dynamics simulation was analysed and compared.These peptides also partially triggered CTL isolated from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells of HBV positive patients, and the response was peptide-spcific.These results showed that negatively-charged amino acid residue at P2 hampered binding affinity of the peptides to HLA-A2 molecules, and that binding affinity of the peptides are not always reflected by their immunogenicity among natural T cell repertoire.

      • 충남 연기지역에서 발생한 쭈쭈가무시병 30예의 임상적 고찰

        We experienced 30 Tsutsugamushi disease cases occuring in the Yongi area during late October t 1 early November 1992, diagnosed clinically and serologically by indirect immunofluorescent antibody test with the following results. 1. The disease was prevalent in adult female farmers and most of the patients had chances of exposure to grass fields or scrub. 2. Clinical findings were characterized by fever(100%), myalgia, abdominal pain, headache, rash(87%), eschar(50%), conjunctival injection, CVA tenderness and lymphadenopathy. 3. On laboratory findings, proteinuria(30%) and hematuria(17%) were observed and signs of interstitial pneumonia(7%) on chest X-ray film were noted. 4. All the patients showed mild clinical course and good response to antibiotics therapy with doxycycline or chloramphenicol.

      • 우리나라 화학물질 관련 사고 대비 및 대응체계 분석

        Recently, several large chemical accidents took place in many countries. Therefore, many countries strengthened the regulation related to management of chemical safety. In case of our country, about 500 chemical accidents took place for the past decay. The preparation and response system for chemical accidents is a most important element for management of chemical safety. In this study, we analyze the preparation and response system for chemical accidents described in several regulations of our country, and suggest a more appropriate management system for chemical safety. Accident report documents vary among the Toxic Chemical Control Law, the Fire Services Law and the Industrial Safety and Health Law. In case of the Fire Services Law, there is not a concrete description about the source chemical of accident. The response authority for chemical accident is dualistic. Minister of Government Administration and Home Affairs is responsible for emergent rescue, on the other hand, ministers of central administrative branches are in charge of reconstruction of chemical accident. Therefore these dualistic system make confuse in response to a large chemical accident.

        The purpose of this study was to identify service importance which golfer perceived on a variety of services. The 695 subjects (92.7%) were selected using quota sampling method from people who used a golf course in Kyunggi-do, The reliability of the questionnaire was Cronbach's α=.770 to ,872, and the validity was verified by the 5 sport marketing professors and 5 experts related a golf, The statistics were descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA, and post-hoc comparison, The results were as follows. First, the importance degree of a golf course service was different to an utilization cost in gender, a resting place in married or not, a clubhouse, reservation, as utilization cost, a resting place, supplementary facilities, and customer convenience in a scholarship, an utilization cost and supplementary facilities in a type of occupation, reservation and an utilization cost in income, Second, the importance degree of a golf course service was different to customer convenience in member or nonmember, a clubhouse and a resting place in a number of membership card, reservation, an resting place, an utilization cost, and course administration in frequency of utilization, a clubhouse, reservation, an utilization cost and service before playing in reason of utilization.

      • 인플레이션 期待下의 貨弊需要

        Milton Friedman argued that physical goods should be regarded as a substitute for money and that higher expected rates of inflation should induce a portfolio shift from money to physical assets. As Friedman has derived his equation, the demand for real balances is a function of the expected rate of inflation in addition to nominal interest rates and real income. A number of empirical studies for different countries have shown that the anticipated rate of inflation has an independent direct effect on the demand for money, other than via interest rates. But in Korea, there are few studies about the role of expected rate of inflation in the demand for money. The purpose of this paper is to test the significance of the sorted-out independent effect of the expected rate of inflation on real balances and to suggest more appropriate monetary policy in such country suffering high inflation as Korea. In this paper a real partial adjustment mechanism of money demand is assumed. And the expected rate of inflation is estimated by the stochastic time series model(ARIMA model). According to the evidence of this paper, the expected rate of inflation exerts significant influences upon money holdings, while nominal rate fo interest has little explanatory power in money demand function. This confirms the fact that nominal rate of interest has been under the strict government control and has not reflected the opportunity cost of money holdings in Korea. These results suggest that monetary authority should control money supply more carefully in Korea, where everyone has inflationary expectations. In further studies particular emphasis should be given on the mechanism of price expectations formation associated with the appropriate specification of the money demand function and the correct forecast of the effect of monetary policy.
