• Analysis of compassionate care experience among clinical nurses using grounded theory

        Hwa Soon Kim,Eun Ha Roh,Kyungsun Moon,Jihee Kim,Youngjin Lee,Hwa Soon Kim,Eun Ha Roh,Kyungsun Moon,Jihee Kim,Youngjin Lee 한국간호과학회 2021 한국간호과학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10

Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the meaning of the experience of providing compassionate care to patients admitted to acute hospitals. Method: This study design was qualitative research that applies the evidence theory method. The participants were clinical nurses who experienced direct patient care for more than three months (N=13). The data collection was an in-depth face-to-face interview from July 2020 to February 2021. The number of interviews per participant was one time, and the interview time was 30-60 minutes, which was recorded after obtaining informed consent, and the researcher immediately transcribed and analyzed after the interview. The data analysis was used the Strauss and Corbin (2008) method. Result: The compassionate care experience of clinical nurses was derived from 78 concepts, 33 subcategories and 16 categories. The central phenomenon representing compassionate care among clinical nurses was derived from ‘holistic care that understands disease progression’. The causal conditions of this process were shown to be "immersion into the patient’s difficult feelings" and ‘sensitive awareness of the patient’s physical and emotional needs". Contextual conditions affecting the phenomenon were ‘experience a patient’s emotional vortex’, ‘workload pressure and time limits’, ‘lack of warmth and tolerance of the nurse’ and intervening conditions were "advice from colleagues’, "training through experience and learning". The interaction strategies were "recognizing emotions", "trying to communicate", priority pain control", "stay by your side by side’, and "to provide information, and the results were "positive changes in the patients", "the satisfaction and belief of a nurses", and "be burned out". Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the ultimate consequence of compassionate care was enhancing job satisfaction and professional beliefs from the nurse"s perspective and leading to patient cooperation and positive health outcomes from the patient"s perspective. It is expected that such nurses will be utilized as the cornerstone for developing the body of knowledge related to compassion-based care.

      • Product differentiation and corporate demand for insurance in a duopoly model

        Kyungsun Kim,Jimin Hong,S. Hun Seog 한국재무학회 2021 한국재무학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.11

This study develops a duopoly model with quality and price competition, and investigates the corporate demand for insurance. Our model predicts asymmetric strategic effects of insurance for two firms with different qualities, because the increases in the quality of each firm have opposite effects on the intensity of price competition. We show that lowquality firm has positive strategic effect of insurance, and might purchase insurance, whereas high-quality firm has negative strategic effect of insurance and never purchases insurance if firms are risk-neutral. When firms are risk-averse, however, high-quality firm might also purchase insurance if the cost of risk is sufficiently large, so that the benefit of insurance exceeds the sum of the strategic effect and the cost of insurance. We show that the availability of insurance might raise the quality levels of both firms.

Beneficial effect of Gyejibokryeong-hwan on climacteric syndrome with blood stasis pattern: A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical pilot trial

        Kyungsun Han,Jeong-Eun Yoo,Jung-Eun Kim,Ohjin Kwon,Ae-Ran Kim,Hyo-ju Park,So-Young Jung,Mikyung Kim,Changsop Yang,Jung-Hyo Cho,Jun-Hwan Lee 한국한의학연구원 2023 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.12 No.2

Background: Gyejibokryeong-hwan (GBH), a herbal mixture that is widely used for climacteric syndrome, is studied for its efficacy; however, no study evaluated the GBH indication, which is a blood-stasis pattern based on traditional Chinese medicine theory. Methods: This was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical pilot trial. Fifty subjects with climacteric syndrome were recruited and randomly assigned to GBH group or placebo group. Subjects were administered GBH or placebo granules for 4 weeks followed by 4 weeks of observation period. For the primary outcome, the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) was evaluated. For the secondary outcomes, quality of life, degrees of abdominal resistance and tenderness, blood-stasis pattern questionnaire and degree of upward movement of Qi were evaluated. Results: After 4-week intervention, the mean change of total MRS score significantly decreased in the GBH group compared to the placebo group (p = 0.037). The quality of life related to physical health (p = 0.008) and blood-stasis pattern (p = 0.018) significantly improved in the GBH group but not in the placebo group. Conclusion: Our findings provide evidence of the feasibility of recruiting subjects with GBH indications and show that GBH may have clinical efficacy for the treatment of menopausal symptoms, especially urogenital symptoms, without any significant adverse events. Trial registration: This trial was registered at Clinical Research Information Service (CRIS identifier: KCT0002040).

      • Effect of Bisphenol A Glycol Methacrylate on Virulent Properties of Streptococcus mutans UA159

        Kim, Kyungsun,An, Jung-Sub,Lim, Bum-Soon,Ahn, Sug-Joon S. Karger AG 2019 Caries research Vol.53 No.1

Bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate (bis-GMA), which is released into the oral environment by dental composites through incomplete polymerization, hydrolysis, and mechanical degradation, can significantly influence oral ecology around resin-based materials. The purpose of this study was to investigate how bis-GMA changes the virulence properties of Streptococcus mutans, a major cariogenic bacterium in humans. The results show that bis-GMA not only inhibited the planktonic growth of cells in medium containing glucose, fructose, or mannose, but also reduced the viability of S. mutans. However, the presence of bis-GMA increased sugar transport and intracellular polysaccharide accumulation in S. mutans, thereby increasing the potential of cell persistence. In addition, bis-GMA could enhance S. mutans’s adhesion to hard surfaces and glucan synthesis, which could contribute to biofilm formation. Although free bis-GMA made cells vulnerable to acidic stress, it also provided increased resistance to hydrogen peroxide, which might confer an advantage in competition with other oral microorganisms during the early stage of biofilm development. Interestingly, the presence of bis-GMA did not change the ability of S. mutans to interact with saliva. The results suggest that leachable bis-GMA could contribute to biofilm-related secondary dental caries at the marginal interface between resin-based materials and teeth by altering the virulent properties of S. mutans, although bis-GMA reduced the planktonic growth and viability of S. mutans.

      • Insurance and Risk Selection when Insurable Asset and Income are Separable

Kyungsun Kim,S. Hun Seog 한국재무학회 2020 한국재무학회 학술대회 Vol.2020 No.08

This paper develops an endogenous selection model under asymmetric information, in which risk types are endogenously determined by individuals. By assuming heterogeneity in asset sensitivity that inheres in a two-argument utility function, we find that in equilibrium, an asset sensitive type of individual may invest in self-protection and become a low-risk, whereas an insensitive type never chooses to expend effort. Unlike the standard model of Rothschild and Stiglitz (1976), the present study demonstrates that the sensitive type (low-risk) demands more insurance than the insensitive type (high-risk) under advantageous selection. We also find other types of equilibrium such as adverse selection, separating equilibrium for a single premium rate, partial pooling equilibrium, and pooling equilibrium. In contrast to all previous papers, the equilibrium results obtained in this study reflect the reality that individuals make trade-offs between an income and an insurable asset.
