Operating Performance Following Acquisitions: Evidence from Taiwan’s IT Industry

        Hsu-Huei Huang,Min-Lee Chan,I-Hsiang Huang,Kuo-Hsing Wu 한국증권학회 2014 Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies Vol.43 No.5

This paper examines the performance of Taiwanese firms following acquisitions and findsthat, when contrasted with the acquisitions that take place in the U.S., Taiwanese acquirersexhibit negative industry-adjusted accounting performance. The negative performance ismostly driven by firms with low growth opportunities, but is mitigated under more concen-trated shareholdings and better board structures. These findings suggest that while weak cor-porate governance at the country-level may adversely affect the overall effectiveness of thetakeover market in Taiwan, there is substantial cross-sectional variation in corporate gover-nance at the firm-level. The evidence also shows that the announcement of an acquisition isaccompanied by a positive announcement effect, and the poor operating performance mightbe related to the decreased assets turnover and sales growth rate.

      • A study on the Comparison of Real and VR 3D Simulated Rubik`s Cube Game Performance

        Wen-Te Chang,Chan-Li Lin,Kuo-Chen Huang 대한인간공학회 2014 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.5

This study is meant to explore the gender, experience and interface effect of the Rubik’s Cube game performance. There were 55 sixth-grade pupils, 29 male and 26 female aged between 11 and 12, from Shu-Lin elementary school, Taiwan, participated the experiment. A 2 (gender)2 (experience/ inexperience)3 (real/ mouse/ touch-pad) mixed-factor experimental design was allocated. The former two factors are between-subject while the latter is within-subject design. As the experiment result analysis indicated, the main effect of gender, experience, and interface were all significant. However, there was no any two-way and three-way interaction among the factors. On the interface effect, the order of the performance is real>mouse>touchpad, suggesting that more effort on better interface design for Rubik’s Cube is needed. Male is superior to the female, and experienced performed better than the inexperience, on the test. This research provides an example on the correlative insight among the multi-factors of experience, gender and interface of the pupils’ spatial performance by Rubik’s Cube test. The study outcome would benefit the related development and research of interface design for children.

Synthesis and Evaluation of Benzoquinolinone Derivatives as SARS-CoV 3CL Protease Inhibitors

        Ahn, Tae-Young,Kuo, Chih-Jung,Liu, Hun-Ge,Ha, Deok-Chan,Liang, Po-Huang,Jung, Young-Sik Korean Chemical Society 2010 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.31 No.1

For the discovery of new antivirals against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-coronavirus (SARS-CoV), we prepared and evaluated several benzoquinoline compounds as its 3C-like protease (3CLpro) inhibitors. Based on the computer modeling study that each of the two rigid benzoquinolinone and N-phenoltetrazole moieties of the compound 1 is bound to the S1 and S2 sites, respectively, of the SARS protease by forming H-bonds and hydrophobic interactions, we designed and synthesized alkylated benzoquinolines at both the sites of the hydroxyl groups. We found that the compound 2a showed five times higher inhibiting activity against the 3CLpro compared to the compound 1.

Oral Lovastatin Attenuates Airway Inflammation and Mucus Secretion in Ovalbumin-Induced Murine Model of Asthma

        Chian-Jiun Liou,,Pei-Yun Cheng,Wen-Chung Huang,Cheng-Chi Chan,Meng-Chun Chen,Ming-Ling Kuo,Jiann-Jong Shen 대한천식알레르기학회 2014 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.6 No.6

Purpose: Lovastatin is an effective inhibitor of cholesterol synthesis. A previous study demonstrated that lovastatin can also suppress airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in murine model of asthma. We aimed to investigate the effect of lovastatin on mucus secretion and inflammation-associated gene expression in the lungs of murine model of asthma. Methods: Female BALB/c mice were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA) by intraperitoneal injection, and orally administered lovastatin from days 14 to 27 post-injection. Gene expression in lung tissues was analyzed using real-time polymerase chain reaction. AHR and goblet cell hyperplasia were also examined. BEAS-2B human bronchial epithelial cells were used to evaluate the effect of lovastatin on the expression of cell adhesion molecules, chemokines, and proinflammatory cytokines in vitro. Results: We showed that lovastatin inhibits the expression of Th2-associated genes, including eotaxins and adhesion molecules, in the lungs of murine model of asthma. Mucin 5AC expression, eosinophil infiltration and goblet cell hyperplasia were significantly decreased in the lung tissue of murine model of asthma treated with lovastatin. Furthermore, lovastatin inhibited AHR and expression of Th2-associated cytokines in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. However, a high dose (40 mg/kg) of lovastatin was required to decrease specific IgE to OVA levels in serum, and suppress the expression of Th2-associated cytokines in splenocytes. Activated BEAS-2B cells treated with lovastatin exhibited reduced IL-6, eotaxins (CCL11 and CCL24), and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 protein expression. Consistent with this, lovastatin also suppressed the ability of HL-60 cells to adhere to inflammatory BEAS-2B cells. Conclusions: These data suggest that lovastatin suppresses mucus secretion and airway inflammation by inhibiting the production of eotaxins and Th2 cytokines in murine model of asthma.
