        Almond Skin Polyphenol Extract Inhibits Inflammation and Promotes Lipolysis in Differentiated 3T3-L1 Adipocytes

        Studies have shown that polyphenols reduce the risk of inflammation-related diseases and upregulates energy expenditure in adipose tissue. Here, we investigated the mechanism of the anti-inflammatory and antiobesity effects of almond skin polyphenol extract (ASP) in differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The antioxidant effects of ASP were measured based on DPPH radical scavenging activity, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, and total phenolic content. Differentiated 3T3-L1 cells were treated with ASP. Subsequently, lipolysis proteins and transcription factors of adipogenesis were measured. The proinflammatory mediators monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) and chemokine ligand 5 (CCL-5) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We found that ASP significantly promoted phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), increased activity of adipose triglyceride lipase and hormone-sensitive lipase, and inhibited adipogenesisrelated transcription factors. In addition, ASP inhibited the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-induced cell inflammatory response via downregulation of MCP-1 and CCL-5 secretion. This study suggests that ASP regulates lipolysis through activation of AMPK, reduced adipogenesis, and suppresses proinflammatory cytokines in adipocytes.

        Ginsenoside Rg3 ameliorates allergic airway infl ammation and oxidative stress in mice

        Background: Ginsenoside Rg3, isolated from Panax ginseng, has anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities. It is known to reduce inflammation in acute lung injury in mice, and to reduce the expression ofinflammatory cytokines and COX-2 in human asthmatic airway epithelium. In this study, we attemptedto determine whether ginsenoside Rg3 inhibits airway inflammation, oxidative stress, and airwayhyperresponsiveness (AHR) in the lungs of asthmatic mice. We also investigated its effects on oxidativestress and the inflammatory response in tracheal epithelial cells. Methods: Asthma symptoms were induced in female BALB/c mice sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA). Micewere divided into five groups: normal controls, OVA-induced asthmatic controls, and asthmatic micetreated with ginsenoside Rg3 or prednisolone by intraperitoneal injection. Inflammatory BEAS-2B cells(human tracheal epithelial cells) treated with ginsenoside Rg3 to investigate its effects on inflammatorycytokines and oxidative responses. Results: Ginsenoside Rg3 treatment significantly reduced eosinophil infiltration, oxidative responses,airway inflammation, and AHR in the lungs of asthmatic mice. Ginsenoside Rg3 reduced Th2 cytokineand chemokine levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids and lung. Inflammatory BEAS-2B cells treated withginsenoside Rg3 reduced the eotaxin and pro-inflammatory cytokine expressions, and monocyteadherence to BEAS-2B cells was significantly reduced as a result of decreased ICAM-1 expression. Furthermore, ginsenoside Rg3 reduced the expression of reactive oxygen species in inflammatory BEAS-2B cells. Conclusion: Ginsenoside Rg3 is a potential immunomodulator that can ameliorate pathological featuresof asthma by decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation

        Production performances and antioxidant activities of laying hens fed Aspergillus oryzae and phytase co-fermented wheat bran

        Objective: Wheat bran (WB) was co-fermented with Aspergillus oryzae and phytase (Phy) to determine whether co-fermentation improve WB phosphorus and fiber utilization in Isa-brown layers. Methods: A total of 112 Isa brown layer were randomly divided into 7 treatments with 8 replicates per a treatment and 2 hens per a replicate. The treatments included basal diet (control), basal diet supplemented with 250 unit/kg Phy (control+Phy), diet with 10% WB (10% WB), diet with 5% WB and 250 unit/kg Phy (5% WB+Phy) diet with 10% WB and 250 unit/kg Phy (10% WB+Phy), diet with 5% fermented WB supplemented with molasses and phy (PCFWH) and 125 unit/kg Phy (5% PCFWH), and diet with 10% PCFWH (10% PCFWH). The intestinal microbial population, intestinal morphology, serum antioxidant enzyme activities, and excreta phosphorus content were assessed. Results: In PCFWH, spore counts, protease activity, xylanase activity, and ferulic acid were 8.50 log/g dry matter (DM), 190 unit/g DM, 120 unit/g DM, and 127 μg/g, respectively. Xylobiose and xylotriose were released in PCFWH, while they were not detectable in WB. Antioxidant capacity was also enhanced in PCFWH compared to WB. The 10% WB+Phy and 10% PCFWH groups produced higher egg mass, but hens fed 5% WB+Phy had the lowest amount of feed intake. Eggs from 10% PCFWH had better eggshell weight, eggshell strength, and eggshell thickness. Birds fed with 10% PCFWH also had higher serum superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. Compare to control, 10% PCFWH significantly reduced excreta phosphorus content. Conclusion: Diet inclusion of 10% PCFWH improved egg quality, antioxidant status, and excreta phosphorus content of laying hens.         Wideband Differentially Fed Circularly Polarized Slotted Patch Antenna with a Large Beamwidth

        A wideband differentially fed circularly polarized (CP) antenna featuring a slotted patch design with a large beamwidth is presented. The final design of the differentially fed CP antenna, aimed at achieving high gain and a wide axial ratio (AR) bandwidth, involves coupling a differential bending dipole antenna to the slotted patch in the same plane. The presented differentially fed CP antenna demonstrates characteristics of a large AR beamwidth, as verified by simulation and experiment. The measured AR beamwidths of 132.3° in the xoz plane (phi = 0°) and 116.2° in the yoz plane (phi = 90°) are realized at 5.5 GHz. The measured result exhibits broadband performance with a -10-dB impedance bandwidth of 78.8% (3.81–8.76 GHz), a 3-dB AR bandwidth of 36.7% (4.78–6.93 GHz), and a maximum gain of 10.2 dBic.

        Risk of venous thromboembolism in Chinese pregnant women: Hong Kong venous thromboembolism study

        BackgroundPrevious Caucasian studies have described venous thromboembolism in pregnancy; however, little is known about its incidence during pregnancy and early postpartum peri-od in the Chinese population. We investigated the risk of venous thromboembolism in a “real-world” cohort of pregnant Chinese women with no prior history of venous thromboembolism.MethodsIn this observational study, 15,325 pregnancies were identified in 14,162 Chinese women at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong between January 2004 and September 2016. Demographic data, obstetric information, and laboratory and imaging data were retrieved and reviewed.ResultsThe mean age at pregnancy was 32.4±5.3 years, and the median age was 33 years (interquartile range, 29‒36 yr). Pre-existing or newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus was present in 627 women (4.1%); 359 (0.7%) women had pre-existing or newly detected hypertension. There was a small number of women with pre-existing heart disease and/or rheumatic conditions. Most deliveries (86.0%) were normal vaginal; the remaining were Cesarean section 2,146 (14.0%). The incidence of venous thromboembolism was 0.4 per 1,000 pregnancies, of which 83.3% were deep vein thrombosis and 16.7% were pul-monary embolism. In contrast to previous studies, 66.7% of venous thrombosis occurred in the first trimester.ConclusionChinese women had a substantially lower risk of venous thromboembolism during preg-nancy and the postpartum period compared to that of Caucasians. The occurrence of pregnancy-related venous thromboembolism was largely confined to the early preg-nancy period, probably related to the adoption of thromboprophylaxis, a lower rate of Cesarean section, and early mobilization.

      • Effects of post anneal for the INZO films prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis

        Indium-nitrogen co-doped zinc oxide thin films (INZO) were prepared on glass substrates in the atmosphere by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The aqueous solution of zinc acetate, ammonium acetate and different indium sources: indium (III) chloride and indium (III) nitrate were used as the precursors. After film deposition, different anneal temperature treatment as 350, 450, $550^{\circ}C$ were applied. Electrical properties as concentration and mobility were characterized by Hall measurement. The surface morphology and crystalline quality were characterized by SEM and XRD. With the activation energy analysis for both films, the concentration variation of the films at different heat treatment temperature was realized. Donors correspond to zinc related states dominate the conduction mechanism for these INZO films after $550^{\circ}C$ high temperature heat treatment process.

        Captive breeding of two insular populations of Pachyrhynchus sarcitis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) from Lanyu and Babuyan Islands

        Endemic species of oceanic islands are vulnerable due to their geographical isolation and small population sizes. For endangered island species, captive breeding program is an important strategy for conservation and sustainable management. Pachyrhynchus sarcitis is a flightless weevil decorated with colourful markings and distributed exclusively on several islets of Southeast Asia including Lanyu, Ludao, and Babuyan Islands. The life history of threatened Pachyrhynchus species of these islands was poorly known. This study reared P. sarcitis from Lanyu and Babuyan Islands for the first time in the laboratory using their host plant (Leea guineensis). The two island populations showed significant differences in instar numbers, in which the weevils from Lanyu Island had a higher instar number regardless the length of developmental duration. The adult body size of both sexes of the Babuyan population became smaller under laboratory condition; whereas Lanyu population in the laboratory did not show this trend. The differences in larval development might suggest local adaptation to the host plants or other life history associated characteristics which requires further research.

        Fungichromin Production by Streptomyces padanus PMS-702 for Controlling Cucumber Downy Mildew

        Streptomyces padanus PMS-702 strain produces a polyene macrolide antibiotic fungichromin and displays antagonistic activities against many phytopathogenic fungi. In the present study, experimental formulations were assessed to improve the production of fungichromin, the efficacy of PMS-702 on the suppression of sporangial germination, and the reduction of cucumber downy mildew caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis. PMS-702 strain cultured in a soybean meal-glucose (SMG) medium led to low levels of fungichromin accumulation and sporangial germination suppression. Increasing medium compositions and adding plant oils (noticeably coconut oil) in SMG significantly increased fungichromin production from 68 to $1,999.6{\mu}g/ml$. Microscopic examination reveals that the resultant suspensions significantly reduced sporangial germination and caused cytoplasmic aggregation. Greenhouse trials reveal that the application of PMS-702 cultural suspensions reduced downy mildew severity considerably. The addition of Tween 80 into the synthetic medium while culturing PMS-702 further increased the suppressive efficacy of downy mildew severity, particularly when applied at 24 h before inoculation or co-applied with inoculum. Fungichromin at $50{\mu}g/ml$ induced phytotoxicity showing minor necrosis surrounded with light yellowish halos on cucumber leaves. The concentration that leads to 90% inhibition (IC90) of sporangial germination was estimated to be around $10{\mu}g/ml$. The results provide a strong possibility of using the S. padanus PMS-702 strain as a biocontrol agent to control other plant pathogens.
