Background/Aims: Urinary tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) have been recently discovered and validated as sensitive biomarkers that can predict stage 2 or 3 acute kidney injury (AKI) development in high-risk patients. We aimed to assess whether these biomarkers could predict adverse outcomes and renal recovery in established AKI patients. Methods: This was a single-center study prospectively enrolling 124 patients diagnosed with AKI. TIMP-2, IGFBP7, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), and kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1) levels were measured at the time of diagnosis and the predictive performance of short-term outcomes and renal recovery was assessed. Results: Patients were divided into 4 quartiles according to the initial urinary TIMP-2/IGFBP7 levels. Stage 3 AKI (odds ratio [OR], 17.86), classified by the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO), as well as the third and fourth quartiles of TIMP-2/IGFBP7 (OR, 5.75 and 44.98, respectively), were found to be independent predictors of renal replacement therapy at the time of AKI diagnosis. In addition, KDIGO stage 3 AKI (OR, 2.468) or the third of fourth quartiles of urinary TIMP-2/IGFBP7 (OR, 1.896 and 3.622, respectively) were also found to be useful in predicting nonrecovery of renal function. In a separate analysis of patients with renal recovery at discharge, initial urinary TIMP-2/IGFBP7 or urinary IGFBP7 at discharge could also predict new-onset or progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD). Conclusions: In AKI patients, urine TIMP-2/IGFBP7 could serve as a biomarker for predicting adverse outcomes, renal recovery, or the development and progression of CKD.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The corrosion of Zn anode, associated with corrosion current and hydrogen evolution reaction, is a major reason for capacity loss and safety problems. As a way of improving the current issue, a newly coating method using difference of melting points has been attempted to synthesize anode materials and found to be highly effective. Effects of corrosion inhibitors are also investigated by diverse electrochemical techniques. The Tafel extrapolation shows the reduced corrosion current compared with that of pure Zn. ZnNi‐2 (Zn:Ni, 95 : 5 wt.%) demonstrates the hydrogen overpotential is shifted to the most negative value as −1.7 V vs. Hg/HgO.</P>

<P>In plants, plasmodesmata (PD) are intercellular channels that function in both metabolite exchange and the transport of proteins and RNAs. Currently, many of the PD structural and regulatory components remain to be elucidated. Receptor-like kinases (RLKs) belonging to a notably expanded protein family in plants compared to the animal kingdom have been shown to play important roles in plant growth, development, pathogen resistance, and cell death. In this study, cell biological approaches were used to identify potential PD-associated RLK proteins among proteins contained within cell walls isolated from rice callus cultured cells. A total of 15 rice RLKs were investigated to determine their subcellular localization, using an <I>Agrobacterium</I>-mediated transient expression system. Of these six PD-associated RLKs were identified based on their co-localization with a viral movement protein that served as a PD marker, plasmolysis experiments, and subcellular localization at points of wall contact between spongy mesophyll cells. These findings suggest potential PD functions in apoplasmic signaling in response to environmental stimuli and developmental inputs.</P><P><B>Electronic supplementary material</B></P><P>The online version of this article (doi:10.1007/s00709-010-0251-4) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.</P>

<P>In recent years, numerous research activities have been devoted to the controlled release of nitric oxide (NO) due to its potential as a restenosis inhibitor which inhibits the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells, the apoptosis of vascular endothelial cells, and aggregation of platelets. This work has demonstrated the development of a novel NO-conjugated gel system comprising of thermosensitive Pluronic F127, branched polyethylenimine (BPEI), and diazeniumdiolates (NONOates). Synthesis of conjugated Pluronic-BPEI-NONOates involved coupling of activated F127 to BPEI followed by the installation of NONOates at the secondary amine sites of branched PEI backbone under high pressure. NO-conjugated gel system, F127-BPEI-NONOates, reduced the initial burst of NO release and prolonged NO release. Furthermore, F127-BPEI-NONOates polymer coated on cell culture dish displayed much higher increase of endothelial cell proliferation and reduction of smooth muscle cell proliferation than that exhibited by non-NO releasing control. Such an NO-releasing device can operate locally and has a great potential in several biomedical applications due to high biocompatibility imparted by the conjugated F127.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/bcches/2010/bcches.2010.22.issue-6/bc100405c/production/images/medium/bc-2010-00405c_0007.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/bc100405c'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
