      • Application of Resin Impregnation Technique to Bolted Joint for Strengthening the Lateral Load Property

        To promote wood utilization in large-scale buildings, the authors have tried to strengthen resisting properties of timber joints. For strengthening, the improvement of resisting property against embedment load to wood is effective. The authors saw potential in the resin impregnation technique as one viable option for strengthen the embedment load to wood. This technique enables the resin impregnation into the wood cell from arbitrary local part of wood surface, and the wood cell filled with resin is expected to have higher resisting property against embedment loading. This study conducted an embedment test to wood specimen loaded by round steel bar. The resin impregnated group showed 1.70 times of control group in yield load, and 3.22 times in initial stiffness. Additionally, this study also conducted a laterally loading test to the bolted joint specimen which was applied the resin impregnation around its bolt holes. The test result indicates the impregnated specimen showed higher properties than control specimen (especially, in initial stiffness and yield load). The calculated result of European Yield Theory showed the value close to experimental result, which suggested that the bolted joint with resin impregnation also yields with the generally known mechanism.

      • S100A16 is a Prognostic Marker for Lung Adenocarcinomas

        Background: Many functional molecules controlling diverse cellular function are included in low-molecular weight proteins and peptides. Materials and Methods: To identify proteins controlling function in lung adenocarcinomas (AC), we performed two-dimensional gel electrophoresis employing tricine-SDS polyacrylamide in the second dimension (tricine 2-DE). This system was able to detect proteins under 1 kDa even with post-translational modifications. To confirm the utility of detected proteins as novel tumor markers for AC, we performed immunohistochemical analysis using 170 formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded lung AC tissues. Results: Tricine 2-DE revealed that five proteins including S100A16 were overexpressed in lung AC-derived cells compared with lung squamous cell carcinoma, small cell carcinoma, and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma-derived cells. Immunohistochemically, S100A16 showed various subcellular localization in lung cancer tissues and a membranous staining status was correlated with the T-factor (P=0.0008), pathological stage (P=0.0015), differentiation extent (P=0.0001), lymphatic invasion (P=0.0007), vascular invasion (P=0.0001), pleural invasion (P=0.0087), and gender (P=0.039), but not with the age or smoking history. More importantly, membranous staining of S100A16 was significantly correlated with a poorer overall survival of either stage I (P=0.0088) or stage II / III (P=0.0003) lung AC patients, and multivariate analysis confirmed that membranous expression of S100A16 was an independent adverse prognostic indicator (P=0.0001). Conclusions: The present results suggest that S100A16 protein is a novel prognostic marker for lung AC.

        Influence of Helicobacter pylori Infection on Endoscopic Findings of Gastric Adenocarcinoma of the Fundic Gland Type

        Purpose: Gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland type (chief cell predominant type) (GA-FG-CCP) was first reported as a rare adenocarcinoma found in the normal fundic mucosa. Recent studies have proposed the possibility that GA-FG-CCPs were also generated in the atrophic mucosa after Helicobacter pylori (HP) eradication therapy. However, little is known on the endoscopic findings of GA-FG-CCP generated in the atrophic mucosa due to its extreme rarity. Materials and Methods: A total of 8 patients who underwent endoscopic submucosal resection and were diagnosed with GA-FG-CCP generated in the HP-uninfected mucosa (4 cases, HP-uninfected group) or HP-eradicated atrophic mucosa (4 cases, HP-eradicated group) were retrospectively analyzed, and their endoscopic findings, including magnifying endoscopy with narrow band imaging (M-NBI), and pathological features were compared. Results: While GA-FG-CCPs in the 2 groups displayed similar macroscopic appearance, M-NBI demonstrated that characteristic microvessels (tapered microvessels like withered branches) were specifically identified in the HP-eradicated group. Pathological investigation revealed that a decreasing number of fundic glands and thinned foveolar epithelium covering tumor ducts were thought to lower the thickness of the covering layer over tumor ducts in the HP-eradicated group. Moreover, dilation of vessels just under the surface of the lesions contributed to the visualization of microvessels by M-NBI. Conclusions: The change in background mucosa due to HP infection influenced the thickness of the covering layer over the tumor ducts and M-NBI finding of GA-FG-CCP.

        Significance of Membranous Urethral Length for Recovery From Postoperative Urinary Incontinence Following Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the significance of the membranous urethral length (MUL), including the thickness of the urethral sphincter, for recovery from postoperative stress urinary incontinence (SUI) following holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP).Methods: We analyzed 78 patients who underwent HoLEP between June 2013 and September 2018, all of whom preoperatively received magnetic resonance imaging. MUL was measured using sagittal T2-weighted fast spin-echo images. The clinical and anatomical factors associated with MUL were evaluated. The recovery time of urinary incontinence was compared between patients with a long MUL (≥14 mm) and a short MUL (<14 mm). SUI included both stress and mixed urinary incontinence. Continence was defined as complete dryness.Results: The median MUL in patients without incontinence at 1 month postoperatively was significantly longer than the MUL in patients with incontinence (15.3 mm vs. 12.7 mm, P<0.001). The continence rates at 1 month after HoLEP in patients with longer MULs and shorter MULs were 80.4% and 30.0%, respectively. The recovery time of urinary incontinence in patients with longer MULs (≥14 mm) was significantly shorter than that in patients with shorter MULs (<14 mm) (log-rank test, P=0.001). After 6 months, the continence rates in patients with longer MULs and shorter MULs were similar (97%). MUL was significantly correlated with the recovery period of urinary incontinence (r=-0.459, P<0.001).Conclusions: MUL was useful for predicting early recovery from urinary incontinence following HoLEP. This study provides evidence that postoperative urinary incontinence following a transurethral procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia was associated with anatomical factors. A long MUL was associated with better tolerance to urinary sphincter damage by the transurethral procedure.

        Quality Indicators for the Detection of Helicobacter pylori-Negative Early Gastric Cancer: A Retrospective Observational Study

        Background/Aims: While Helicobacter pylori (HP)-negative gastric cancer is frequently reported, little is known about the predictors for detecting HP-negative early gastric cancer (EGC). We aimed to evaluate the predictors for the detection of HP-negative EGC. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 13,477 consecutive asymptomatic cases where upper endoscopy was performed by nine physicians from April 2017 to March 2019 and analyzed the detection rate of high-risk lesions (HRLs), including EGC, tubular adenoma, and lymphoma, according to the status of HP infection. The observation time was corrected for multiple regression analyses. Results: For all physicians, the average observation time for screening HP-eradicated and -naïve patients was shorter than that for screening HP-positive patients (p<0.05). Multiple regression analyses revealed that the observation time in the three groups was an independent predictor for detecting HRLs in HP-eradicated patients (p=0.03106, 0.01263, and 0.02485, respectively), while experience of endoscopy was an independent predictor for detecting HRLs in HP-naïve patients (p=0.02638). Conclusions: While observation time during screening endoscopy was a quality indicator for detecting HRLs in HP-eradicated patients, experience of endoscopy was a quality indicator for detecting HRLs in HP-naïve patients.

        M¨ossbauer Spectroscopy of Fe-doped Valence-fluctuating α-YbAlB4

        The magnetic properties of high-quality 25 at.% Fe doped α-YbAlB4 with an orthorhombicPbam structure were investigated by using magnetization measurements and 57Fe M¨ossbauer spectroscopy. The temperature dependence of the magnetization along the a-axis showed anomaliesat TN2 7.7 K and TN1 10.4 K. Broadenings of the peaks in the M¨ossbauer spectrum wereobserved at temperatures below 6 K, which were due to the magnetic hyperfine fields transferredfrom the Yb magnetic moments. The evaluated transferred magnetic hyperfine field almost disappearsaround TN2. The anomalous temperature dependence of the transferred magnetic hyperfinefield reveals that the magnetic structure and the ordered magnetic moments of the Yb ions showcomplex temperature dependences at temperatures below TN1.

      • Clinicopathological Significance of S100A10 Expression in Lung Adenocarcinomas

        Background: S100A10, of the S100 protein family, is reported to be involved in cancer cell invasion and metastasis. The aims of the present study were to immunohistochemically examine S100A10 expression in surgically resected lung adenocarcinomas, and evaluate any relationships with clinicopathological parameters and prognosis of patients. Materials and Methods: S100A10 expression was immunohistochemically studied in 202 consecutive resected lung adenocarcinomas, and its associations with clinicopathological parameters were evaluated. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the effect of S100A10 expression on survival. Results: S100A10 expression was detected in 65 of the 202 (32.2%) lung adenocarcinomas, being significantly correlated with poorer differentiation (P =0.015), a higher pathological TNM stage (stages II and III) (P=0.004), more frequent and severe intratumoral vascular invasion (P=0.001), and a poorer prognosis (P=0.030). However, S100A10 expression was not an independent predictor of survival after controlling for clinicopathological factors. Conclusions: The present study reveals that S100A10 is expressed in a subset of lung adenocarcinomas, and this is related to some clinicopathological parameters, although further studies are required to confirm the correlation between S100A10 expression and prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma patients.

        Wireless sensor networks for underground railway applications: case studies in Prague and London

        There is increasing interest in using structural monitoring as a cost effective way of managing risks once an area of concern has been identified. However, it is challenging to deploy an effective, reliable, large-scale, long-term and real-time monitoring system in an underground railway environment (subway / metro). The use of wireless sensor technology allows for rapid deployment of a monitoring scheme and thus has significant potential benefits as the time available for access is often severely limited. This paper identifies the critical factors that should be considered in the design of a wireless sensor network, including the availability of electrical power and communications networks. Various issues facing underground deployment of wireless sensor networks will also be discussed, in particular for two field case studies involving networks deployed for structural monitoring in the Prague Metro and the London Underground. The paper describes the network design, the radio propagation, the network topology as well as the practical issues involved in deploying a wireless sensor network in these two tunnels.
