This paper presents an application of UPFC (unified power flow controller), a kind of FACTS (flexible AC transmission systems) devices, to stability enhancement in a multi-machine power system. A novel control scheme using wide-area information from generators in the system is proposed for two parts of UPFC, shunt and series connected components, which mainly affect bus voltage and line active power flow around the installation site respectively. The proposed control scheme is based on a control law for shifting a time derivative value of the kinetic energy function in the negative direction. Numerical simulations are carried out on a 27-machine meshed test system where several UPFCs are installed, and the impacts of the two controlled components of UPFC and number of UPFCs on stability enhancement are investigated. The results show that both of the UPFC components controlled by the proposed method are effective for damping enhancement and the shunt connected component is particularly effective for the first-swing stability improvement. It is also made clear that the proposed control scheme can control multiple UPFCs without mutual interference.
Historical Development of Japanese management : An Overview

Collectivism based upon an equal treatment of all employees is one of the most distinguished characteristics of Japanese management. The traditional research has tried to find out when this collectivism appeared in the history of Japanese business. It has emphasized certain periods to which the origin of Japanese management goes back. On the contrary, this paper is to show the dynamic development of Japanese management from the Edo Period to the present time, emphasizing how and why Japanese management has changed its nature to became as it is today. Historically, Japanese companies went through several periods in which they faced particular problems, and Japanese management evolved as they tried to solve these problems. In the Edo Period they established apprentice systems to maintain family businesses. In the process of modernization, they found a gap between the existing Japanese system and the imported modern technology, and they had to fill this gap by using the traditional idea of "business family." During the World War Ⅱ, the discrimination between white collar and blue collar workers diminished to attain high productivity. After the World War Ⅱ because of the democratization of Japanese economy and business by the Occupation Army and the high economic growth, Japanese companies established so called "Japanese Style Management" which created a strong competitive edge of Japanese business. However, after the collapse of the bubble economy, Japanese companies began changing their management systems to meet the changing environments.
Genetic Diversity of mtDNA D-loop Polymorphisms in Laotian Native Fowl Populations

Here, we studied the genetic diversity of native fowls in Laos by analyzing a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence polymorphism. A 546-bp fragment of the mtDNA D-loop region was sequenced in 129 chickens from the areas of Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse. In total, 29 haplotypes were identified and formed five clades. Haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity of the native fowls in Laos were $0.85536{\pm}0.0172$ and $0.010158{\pm}0.005555$, respectively. Although the Laotian native fowls were distributed across five clades, most of them were clustered in two main clades (A and B), which were originated in China. The other haplotypes were contained in clades D, F, and I, which originated from continental southeast Asia. These results suggest that multiple maternal lineages were involved in the origin of domestic chicken in Laos. Moreover, there appear to be at least two maternal lineages, one from China and the other from the southeast Asian continent.

In our previous work, a novel stabilizing control scheme based on an energy function was proposed for Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC), a kind of FACTS devices, to improve transient stability in the multi-machine power system. This paper investigates two kinds of techniques to estimate the sensitivities of generator outputs with respect to two controllable components of UPFC, to reduce information and computational load for the sensitivity calculation in the control system. The two techniques are based on Thevenin's theorem and the DC power flow method, respectively. Numerical simulations are conducted on the multi-machine power system with several UPFCs. The UPFCs are controlled by using the sensitivity estimation techniques, and their effect on the transient stability is investigated. The results show that the proposed techniques can estimate the sensitivities with high accuracy and can improve the transient stability.
A Case of Acute Pancreatitis Associated with Risperidone Treatment

Acute pancreatitis with antipsychotic treatment is rare but sometimes causes a fatal adverse effect. Most cases of acute pancreatitisdue to atypical antipsychotic agents are reported to occur within six months of starting antipsychotic administration. Caused by risperidone is rare. The patient had a high fever, stomachache and vomiting. The results of the abdominal computedtomograhpy scan were negative. The results of the abdominal ultrasonography were positive for gallstones in gallbladder anddistention of the common bile duct. She had been fasting and received antibiotic intravenous injections. Amylase and lipasetiters were high. After risperidone discontinuation, both the levels of the amylase and the lipase were gradually decreased. Threemonths later, the patient still maintains a good clinical balance. Although atypical antipsychotic-induced pancreatitis has beenreported in conjunction with hyperglycemia, the pathophysiologic mechanism of these adverse events remains unclear. Thiscase got pancreatitis 6 month after risperidone treatment. Using the antipsychotic agents, it is necessary to monitor pancreasfunction.
Association between Sleep Habits and Problems and Internet Addiction in Adolescents

Objective This study examined the association between sleep habits and problems and Internet addiction in adolescents. Methods Junior high school students from a local town in Japan (n=853; male/female, 425/428) were the subjects of this study, and were assessed for severity of Internet addiction and sleep habits and problems using the self-reported version of the Young’s Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and Child and Adolescent Sleep Checklist (CASC). Results The wake time on weekdays was not significantly different among the three groups; addicted, possibly-addicted, and non-addicted. In the addicted group, the total night sleep time was significantly shorter, and the bedtime was significantly delayed on both weekdays and weekends compared with those in the possibly-addicted and non-addicted groups. The wake time of the addicted group was significantly later than that of the other groups. The total scores of sleep problems measured by the CASC were significantly higher in the addicted and possibly-addicted groups than in the non-addicted group. Conclusion Internet addiction is strongly associated with sleep habits and problems in adolescents. These findings suggest that internet addiction should be considered while examining adolescent lifestyle.
Extraction of Individual Pedestrians Employing Stereo Camera Images

A traffic accident occurs mainly because of carelessness of a driver. To prevent such an accident, many systems which detect pedestrians from vehicle are proposed. But most of these systems give a warning to a driver every time when a pedestrian is detected. The effect of warning becomes lower if the frequency of warning increases in a busy area. The objective of this study is to develop a technique for detecting pedestrians from a vehicle and to arrange them according to their potential risks by analyzing their behaviors. In this paper, we propose a technique for segmenting pedestrians employing stereo camera images to analyze a pedestrian’s behavior. First, foreground regions are extracted employing background estimation using the mixture of Gaussian model. After extracting foreground regions in an input image, these regions are segmented by using the distance information. By using this method, each shape of the detected pedestrians can be obtained even when pedestrians are overlapping with each other. The proposed technique was examined experimentally employing real video images and satisfactory results were obtained.
Design and Evaluation of De Bruijn Sequence Generators Based on Feedback-Limited NFSRs

Generators of de Bruijn sequences are designed based on feedback-limited nonlinear feedback shift registers. Correlation properties of orthogonal codes obtained by the proposed generators are investigated. Furthermore, hardware performances of the proposed generators are evaluated.
