Kato, Kenji,Watanabe, Takuro,Heine, Hans-Joachim,Boissiere, C,Schulz, G,Woo, Jin-Chun,Kim, Jin Seog,Oh, Sang Hyup,Bae, Hyun Kil,Kim, Yong Du,Qiao, Han,Guenther, Frank R,Rhoderick, George C,Miller, Wal Springer-Verlag 2012 METROLOGIA -BERLIN- Vol.49 No.-

This key comparison was performed to demonstrate the capability of NMIs to analyse the purity of methane for use as a source gas in the preparation of standard gas mixtures. This capability is an essential requirement for the preparation of accurate standards of natural gas and some other fuels.

Since it is difficult to carry out a comparison with individual samples of pure gas, the sample for this comparison was a synthetic mixture of high purity methane with selected added impurities of nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and ethane. These mixtures were prepared by a gas company as a batch of 10 cylinders and their homogeneity and stability were evaluated by NMIJ.

The KCRVs for the four different analytes in this key comparison are based on a consensus of values reported by participants. The uncertainties in the degrees of equivalence were calculated by combining the reported uncertainties with the homogeneity of the samples and the uncertainty of the KCRV. The results submitted are generally consistent with the KCRV within the estimated uncertainties.

Finally, this comparison demonstrates that the analysis of nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and ethane in methane at amount fractions of 1 µmol/mol to 5 µmol/mol is generally possible with an uncertainty of 5% to 10%.

Main text.To reach the main text of this paper, click on Final Report. A preliminary study on the behavior of E. coli under the natural environment-Chase by image analyzer
Kenji Kato 江原大學校 附設 環境硏究所 1992 環境硏究 Vol.9 No.-
To evaluate the viability of bacteria is important in understanding their behavior under the natural environment. Particularly, it is essential in chasing the fate of deliberately released GEMs. I propose a new method to evaluate the viability of bacteria from the measurement of cellular parameters of RNA and DNA contents using an image analyzer. Conventional plate count technique showed that the number of culturable E. coli decreased quickly when they were moved from culture to river water. Direct count showed the total number did not decreased, although image analysis revealed that a major part of the constituents turned to be in the resting phase in river water. This suggests that culturable bacteria by plate count does not represent the viability of the examined bacteria.

This report introduces the structural design of Hibiya Mitsui Tower built in Tokyo Midtown Hibiya. The upper part of this tower is used for offices and the lower portion is for commercial facilities and a cinema complex which need the large open spaces. The 192m-high building has 35 floors above ground and 4 below ground. The structure is a steel frame using CFT columns to feature the high-performance oil dampers and the buckling restrained braces for vibration control. First, an outline of the structural design of this building is presented. Second, we introduce the transfer frame adopted to realize the large open spaces in the lower part, and the long column supporting the corner part of the high-rise building to avoid making a shade on the adjacent Hibiya Park, which are the feature of this building. Finally, we present an outline of the latest highly efficient semi-active oil dampers adopted in this building, and the vibration responses of this tower.

Lactobacillus gasseri OLL 2716 promotes the elimination of Helicobacter pylori and is utilized in yogurts that are specifically labeled as health foods. On the other hand, milk whey fermented by Propionibacterium freudenreichii ET-3, which increases the numbers of Bifidobacterium, is effective for intestinal disorders. We previously demonstrated that oral administration of L. gasseri and P. freudenreichii fermentation metabolites (LP-FM) improved calf intestinal microflora and reduced the incidence of diarrhea. However, the detailed immunological mechanisms responsible for these effects remain to be fully understood. In this study, we investigated whether LP-FM stimulates the innate immune response and promotes the elimination of Listeria monocytogenes in mice. The C57BL/6 female mice that were treated with LP-FM or L. gasseri fermentation metabolites alone for 4 weeks had more peripheral white blood cells than the untreated control mice. In particular, LP-FM-treated mice had higher CD4- and CD8-positive T-cell counts. The levels of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species produced by peritoneal macrophages were also higher in LP-FM-treated mice. Furthermore, LP-FM-treated mice that were infected with L. monocytogenes exhibited significant enhancement of the elimination of Listeria from the spleen and the liver in comparison with untreated control mice infected with Listeria. The activation of innate immunity by LP-FM was increased by the combination of fermentation metabolites from P. freudenreichii. These results suggest that LP-FM, which contains metabolites from L. gasseri and P. freudenreichii, stimulates the function of the innate immune system, thereby significantly promoting the elimination of L. monocytogenes in mice.
DETERMINATION AND CORRELATION OF LLE AND SLE DATA FOR THE SYSTEM ANILINE + CYCLOHEXANE
Ochi, Kenji,Kato, Yoshihisa,Saito, Tohru,Kurihara, Kiyofumi,Kojima, Kazuo 한국화학공학회 1997 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.14 No.5
A newly developed laser light scattering technique was used for the determination of mutual solubilities in the aniline+cyclohexane system at moderate pressures. The liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE) were measured from the region of solid-liquid equilibria (SLE) to the upper critical solution temperature. Freezing points in this system were determined by a cooling curve method. The solubility data were correlated with the NRTL equation.

Study Design: This experimental study was performed using human ligamentum flavum–derived cells (HFCs).Purpose: To investigate the intracellular signaling mechanism of interleukin-6 (IL-6) secretion in transforming growth factor-β (TGF- β)-stimulated HFCs.Overview of Literature: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a prevalent disease among the elderly, characterized by debilitating pain in the lower extremities. Although the number of patients with LSS has increased in recent years, the underlying pathomechanism remains unclear. Clinical examinations typically rely on magnetic resonance imaging to diagnose patients, revealing ligamentum flavum hypertrophy. Some studies have suggested an association between ligamentum flavum hypertrophy and inflammation/fibrosis, and expression of TGF-β and IL-6 has been observed in surgically obtained ligamentum flavum samples. However, direct evidence linking TGF-β and IL-6 expression in HFCs is lacking. Methods: HFCs were obtained from patients with LSS who had undergone decompression surgery. The cells were stimulated with TGF-β and pretreated with either the p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase inhibitor SB203580 or the p44/42 MAP kinase inhibitor FR180204. IL-6 secretion in the cell culture medium and IL-6 messenger RNA (mRNA) expression levels were analyzed using an enzyme-linked immunoassay and real-time polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Results: TGF-β administration resulted in a dose- and time-dependent stimulation of IL-6 release. Treatment with SB203580 and FR180204 markedly suppressed TGF-β–induced IL-6 secretion from HFCs. Moreover, these inhibitors suppressed IL-6 mRNA expression in response to TGF-β stimulation. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that TGF-β induces IL-6 protein secretion and gene expression in HFCs through the activation of p38 or p44/42 MAP kinases. These results suggest a potential association between IL-6–mediated inflammatory response and tissue hypertrophy in LSS, and we provide insights into molecular targets for therapeutic interventions targeting LSS-related inflammation through our analysis of the MAP kinase pathway using HFCs.

In industry, an unsteady flow rate measurement of gases is becoming important increasingly. Our group has been developed an unsteady flow generator with an isothermal chamber for gases and showed that the calibration of the dynamic characteritics for the tested flow meter was effective. However, not only the measurement of the instantaneous flow rate value but also the evaluation of the time mean value in the unsteady flow becomes important in inustry. And it was difficult to control precisely the time mean value of the generated flow rate using the former unsteady flow generator which we developed. To solve this problem, our group developed an oscillatory gas flow generator with highly preciseinlet flow control system in 2008. In this research, to improve and clarify the precision of the generated flow rate with the oscillatory gas flow generator, we conduct to evaluate the performance of the in let flow rate control system with the sonic nozzle and the high precise pressure regulator. As a result, the highre producible results and stability were shown. Moreover, we perform the experiments and uncertainty analysis and confirm the effective of the suggested method.
