        Generation of Hydrogen Peroxide by Single-Atom Clusters Pd Anchored on t-BaTiO3 for Piezoelectric Degradation of Tetracycline

        Single-atom Pd clusters anchored on t-BaTiO3 material was synthesized using hydrothermal and ultrasonic methods for the effective piezoelectric catalytic degradation of pollutants using vibration energy. XRD patterns of BaTiO3 loaded with monoatomic Pd were obtained before and after calcining, and showed typical cubic-phase BTO. TEM and HAADF-STEM images indicated single-atom Pd clusters were successfully introduced into the BaTiO3. The piezoelectric current density of the prepared Pd-BaTiO3 binary composite was significantly higher than that of the pristine BaTiO3. Under mechanical vibration, the nanomaterial exhibited a tetracycline decomposition rate of ~95 % within 7 h, which is much higher than the degradation rate of 56.7 % observed with pure BaTiO3. Many of the piezo-induced electrons escaped to the Pd-doped BaTiO3 interface because of Pd’s excellent conductivity. Single-atom Pd clusters help promote the separation of the piezo-induced electrons, thereby achieving synergistic catalysis. This work demonstrates the feasibility of combining ultrasonic technology with the piezoelectric effect and provides a promising strategy for the development of ultrasonic and piezoelectric materials.

        Multi-Output LED Driver Integrated with 3-Switch Converter and Passive Current Balance for Portable Applications

        This study presents a new portable eight-output light emitting diode (LED) driver. The eight output-channels are divided into two equal groups, and their output powers can be controlled individually by three active switches. In addition, a simple capacitor-based passive current balancing circuit (CBC) is employed in each port to guarantee that the currents of the four LEDs are the same. When compared with the conventionally used separate two-output isolated converters, the proposed one uses one less active switch. Moreover, zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) is achieved, which improves the power efficiency of the driver. Finally, a highly compact prototype is built, which can reach an efficiency of 94.6%.

        Cellulose nanocrystals-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of mesoporous α-Fe2O3 for photocatalysis

        A hydrothermal process was adopted to synthesize mesoporous α-Fe2O3 materials using cellulose nanocrystals as template, andits photocatalytic performance on degradation of dye was investigated. The characteristic results through XRD and N2adsorption showed that the mesoporous α-Fe2O3 was successfully prepared, which possessed an average pore size of 39.5 nmand surface area of 46.5 m2 g−1. The photocatalytic capacity of the synthesized mesoporous α-Fe2O3 was determined byfollowing the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible-light irradiation conditions, and the results showed that thesample prepared with CNC exhibited better photocatalytic activity under the condition studied than that prepared withoutCNC. These results demonstrated that thus prepared mesoporous α-Fe2O3 would have a great potential to be used as a catalystin degrading organic dyes during a typical industrial wastewater treatment.

      • Characteristics of 240 Chinese Father-child Pairs with Malignant Disease

        To obtain a screening and early detection reference for individuals who have a family history of cancer on the paternal side, we collected and analyzed data from 240 pairs in which both fathers and their children were diagnosed with cancer. Disease categories of fathers and sons were similar to that of the general population of China, whereas daughters were different from general female population with high incidence of breast cancer and gynecological cancer. Sons were more likely than daughters to have the same type of cancer, or to have cancer in the same organ system as their fathers (P < 0.0001). Sons and daughters developed malignant diseases 11 and 16 years earlier than their fathers, respectively (P < 0.0001 for both sons and daughters). Daughters developed malignant diseases 5 years earlier than sons (P < 0.0001). Men with a family history of malignant tumors on the paternal side should be screened for malignancies from the age of 45 years, or 11 years earlier than the age of their fathers' diagnosis, and women should be screened from the age of 40 years, or 16 years earlier than the age at which their fathers were diagnosed with cancer. Lung cancer should be investigated in both men and women, whilst screening should focus on cancer of the digestive system in men and on breast and gynecological cancer (ovary, uterine and cervical cancer) in women.

        Investigation on Cutting Force Reduction of Eco-friendly Cutting Fluids with Castor Oil and Additives in Broaching

        At present, the traditional cutting fluids usually containing the chemical toxicity or physical irritating ability will cause illness or injury in workers. Therefore, research on eco-friendly cutting fluids has become a mainstream trend in the development of metalworking process with a type of coolant and lubricant. In this present work, three types of eco-friendly cutting fluids including distill water, castor oil, linear alkyl benzene sulphonic acid (LAS-Na) and nanographite by different proportion under ultrasonic vibration were prepared. Then they were assessed by the comparisons of cutting forces in broaching under the condition of micro-atomization spraying. After that, the optimum ratio of each type of cutting fluid was gained based on the reductions of broaching forces. Physical stability, droplets distribution and wettability of those optimal type of ecofriendly cutting fluid were measured. On the basis of characteristics, the metal-cutting principle with those experimental types of cutting fluids was discussed. Results shows that the surfactant of LAS-Na could effectively prevent the coalescence of oil droplets and decrease the average diameter of droplets so that enhanced wettability, but the nanographite was strongly influenced by the cleaning effect of LAS-Na. Moreover, reduction in broaching force was caused by the mechanism of the best adsorption and the best permeability with the effect of the surfactant of LAS-Na.

        Impact of wilting and additives on fermentation quality and carbohydrate composition of mulberry silage

        Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of wilting and additives on the fermentation quality, structural and non-structural carbohydrate composition of mulberry silages. Methods: The selected lactic acid bacteria strains Lactobacillus plantarum 'LC279063' (L1), commercial inoculant Gaofuji (GF), and Trichoderma viride cellulase (CE) were used as additives for silage preparation. Silage treatments were designed as control (CK), L1, GF, or CE under three wilting rates, that is wilting for 0, 2, or 4 hours (h). After ensiling for 30 days, the silages were analyzed for the chemical and fermentation characteristics. Results: The results showed that wilting had superior effects on increasing the non-structural carbohydrate concentration and degrading the structural carbohydrate. After ensiling for 30 days, L1 generally had a higher fermentation quality than other treatments, indicated by the lower pH value, acetic acid, propionic acid and ammonia nitrogen (NH<sub>3</sub>-N) content, and the higher lactic acid, water soluble carbohydrate, glucose, galactose, sucrose, and cellobiose concentration (p<0.05) at any wilting rate. Wilting could increase the ratio of lactic acid/acetic acid and decrease the content of NH<sub>3</sub>-N. Conclusion: The results confirmed that wilting degraded the structural carbohydrate and increased the non-structural carbohydrate; and L1 exhibited better properties in improving fermentation quality and maintaining a high non-structural carbohydrates composition compared with the other treatments.

        Interference Mitigation Scheme by Antenna Selection in Device-to-Device Communication Underlaying Cellular Networks

        In this paper, we investigate an interference mitigationscheme by antenna selection in device-to-device (D2D) communicationunderlaying downlink cellular networks. We first present theclosed-form expression of the system achievable rate and its asymptoticbehaviors at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the largeantenna number scenarios. It is shown that the high SNR approximationincreases with more antennas and higher ratio between thetransmit SNR at the base station (BS) and the D2D transmitter. Inaddition, a tight approximation is derived for the rate and we revealtwo thresholds for both the distance of the D2D link and thetransmit SNR at the BS above which the underlaid D2D communicationwill degrade the system rate. We then particularize on thesmall cell setting where all users are closely located. In the smallcell scenario, we show that the relationship between the distance ofthe D2D transmitting link and that of the D2D interfering link tothe cellular user determines whether the D2D communication canenhance the systemachievable rate. Numerical results are providedto verify these results.

        Online condition assessment of high-speed trains based on Bayesian forecasting approach and time series analysis

        High-speed rail (HSR) has been in operation and development in many countries worldwide. The explosive growth of HSR has posed great challenges for operation safety and ride comfort. Among various technological demands on high-speed trains, vibration is an inevitable problem caused by rail/wheel imperfections, vehicle dynamics, and aerodynamic instability. Ride comfort is a key factor in evaluating the operational performance of high-speed trains. In this study, online monitoring data have been acquired from an in-service high-speed train for condition assessment. The measured dynamic response signals at the floor level of a train cabin are processed by the Sperling operator, in which the ride comfort index sequence is used to identify the train's operation condition. In addition, a novel technique that incorporates salient features of Bayesian inference and time series analysis is proposed for outlier detection and change detection. The Bayesian forecasting approach enables the prediction of conditional probabilities. By integrating the Bayesian forecasting approach with time series analysis, one-step forecasting probability density functions (PDFs) can be obtained before proceeding to the next observation. The change detection is conducted by comparing the current model and the alternative model (whose mean value is shifted by a prescribed offset) to determine which one can well fit the actual observation. When the comparison results indicate that the alternative model performs better, then a potential change is detected. If the current observation is a potential outlier or change, Bayes factor and cumulative Bayes factor are derived for further identification. A significant change, if identified, implies that there is a great alteration in the train operation performance due to defects. In this study, two illustrative cases are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method for condition assessment of high-speed trains.

        Utility of DNA barcoding for identification of common Vespa species (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) from Yunnan, China

        As traditional Chinese medicine and edible insects, Ve s p a hornets have high economic value and huge market demand. Hornet breeding has become an important way to increase the income of mountain farmers in China, but the limitation of traditional identification methods has become the bottleneck of the modern development of hornet resources. In this study, a simple and reliable method for the molecular identification of typical hornets from Yunnan was successfully established. In the NCBI database, DNA sequences of hornet samples were aligned as Vespa analis, Ve s p a b a s a l i s , Vespa velutina, Vespa mandarinia, Ve s p a m a g n i f i c a , Ve s p a b i n g h a m i , Ve s p a s o r o r by BLAST search. The efficiency of the PCR amplification of mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase I (COI) gene sequences in all samples was 100% by using the optimized program. Moreover, a reference database for DNA barcodes of Vespa materials in Yunnan was constructed. This study provided a successful example for the identification of local insects of Yunnan and will be helpful to the development of wasp resources.
