Parable of Talents: How North Korea-related, Faith-Based Workers Respond to Enhanced Sanctions and a Global Pandemic

Yi Joseph 서강대학교 종교연구소 2022 Journal of Korean Religions Vol.13 No.1

How did American members of North Korea-related, faith-based organizations (FBOs)— ‘‘US humanitarian evangelicals’’—respond to the governmental restrictions linked to enhanced sanctions and a global pandemic? More-committed members shifted from direct person-to-person engagement inside North Korea to indirect activities outside, including political advocacy in the US and language training in South Korea. They articulated narratives that competed with those of human-rights evangelicals supporting increasing sanctions and of fellow humanitarian evangelicals discouraged from North Korea. They cast young North Koreans as victims of sanctions and vanguards of unification, and the current, restrictive period as a ‘‘parable of talents’’ moment to faithfully prepare for God’s special plan for Korea. Our findings derive from a nearly four-year (2018–2021) study of US humanitarian evangelicals, based in South Korea and the US. This article draws on and contributes to the literature on non-governmental organizations aiding North Korea, and to the larger literature on cultures, frames, and narratives.

Koreans and Foreigners: Public Discourse on Nation and Ethnicity in South Korea

        필립스,YI JOSEPH E,김선주 연세대학교 동서문제연구원 2016 동서연구 Vol.28 No.2

This article explores how public discourse in South Korea, expressed through academic publications, mainstream media, and social media, is reimagining relations between Koreans and different nationalities and ethnic groups. Since the country’s independence (1948), the paradigmatic image is one of Koreans unified and righteous in their relations with often-morally problematic foreigners: this is commonly termed the ‘ethnic-nationalist’ model. A more recent, ‘multicultural’ model of public discourse does not challenge the stereotype of virtuous Koreans, but re-imagines foreigners and migrants, from less-developed countries, as socially vulnerable and deserving the support of native Koreans at home and abroad. This elite narrative of the ‘pitiful foreigner’ is fiercely contested by non-elite, nationalist-minded publics, and, interestingly, critiqued by some academic and media elites and even migrants. The ‘ethnic-nationalist’ discourse of righteous Koreans is challenged by some scholars, activists, and writers, who discuss the nation’s complex past and present. We reveal that this evolving debate challenges fixed stereotypes of ‘Koreans’ and ‘foreigners,’ promoting more complex portraits of these groups. We also consider whether the debate contributes to a 'Korean liberalism' model of public discourse, which imagines people as complex individuals with equal rights and duties.

The Beneficial Effects of Electroacupuncture at PC6 Acupoints (Neiguan) on Myocardial Ischemia in ASIC3 / mice

        Ying-Wang,Yi-guo Chen,Wan-shuang Zhao,Di Li,Ya-han Xu,Meng-di Li,Jin Chen,Zhi-jun Kou,Qi-ge Wang,Nsoa dimitri Joseph 사단법인약침학회 2018 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.11 No.3

This study aims to investigate the possible mechanisms of electroacupuncture (EA) at PC6to improve myocardial ischemia (MI) by regulating the cardiac transient outward potassiumcurrent channel (Ito). According to the random number table, the mice were dividedinto six groups of six mice each: control group, MI group, PC6, LU7 (Lieque-point), ST36(Zusanli-point), and nonacupoint group. Mice in the control group were injected with saline(20 mg/kg, 24 hours interval), and the other ASIC3 / mice were injected subcutaneouslytwice with isoproterenol (ISO) (20 mg/kg, 24 hours interval). In thepreexperiment, 5 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg, and 30 mg/kg of ISO were used, andthe results showed that 5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg of ISO both could induce acute MI, butshorter duration of sustained MI. On the other hand, an injection of 30 mg/kg can makethe mice experience arrhythmia or die immediately, and EA was operated at PC6, LU7,ST36 acupoints, and nonacupoint in the mice of PC6, LU7, ST36, and nonacupoint groups, respectively, after injecting twice. Then Western blotting techniques (Western Blot) wereused to analyze the protein expressions of Kv1.4, Kv4.2, Kv4.3, and KchIP2. The results ofthis experiment showed that the protein expressions of Kv1.4, Kv4.2, Kv4.3, and KChIP2 inMI group were significantly lower than those in the control group (p < 0.01). Comparedwith MI group, the results of PC6, LU7, and ST36 groups obviously increased (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the expressions of PC6 group were higher than LU7 group and ST36 group(p < 0.05). And electrocardiogram’s T-waves showed obvious pathological changes inthe MI group compared to the control group (p < 0.01). After EA, the abnormal T-waves voltage of ECG in PC6, LU7, and ST36 groups was improved (p < 0.05). In addition, therate change of PC6 group was larger than that of both LU7 and ST36 groups (p < 0.05). But the T-waves voltage of the nonacupoint group was not significantly different than thatof the MI group (p > 0.05).

Leukocyte invasion of the brain after peripheral trauma in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

        Chen Xiang-Ke,Kwan Joseph Shiu-Kwong,Wong Gordon Tin-Chun,Yi Zhen-Ni,Ma Alvin Chun-Hang,Chang Raymond Chuen-Chung 생화학분자생물학회 2022 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.54 No.-

Despite well-known systemic immune reactions in peripheral trauma, little is known about their roles in posttraumatic neurological disorders, such as anxiety, sickness, and cognitive impairment. Leukocyte invasion of the brain, a common denominator of systemic inflammation, is involved in neurological disorders that occur in peripheral inflammatory diseases, whereas the influences of peripheral leukocytes on the brain after peripheral trauma remain largely unclear. In this study, we found that leukocytes, largely macrophages, transiently invaded the brain of zebrafish larvae after peripheral trauma through vasculature-independent migration, which was a part of the systemic inflammation and was mediated by interleukin-1b (il1b). Notably, myeloid cells in the brain that consist of microglia and invading macrophages were implicated in posttraumatic anxiety-like behaviors, such as hyperactivity (restlessness) and thigmotaxis (avoidance), while a reduction in systemic inflammation or myeloid cells can rescue these behaviors. In addition, invading leukocytes together with microglia were found to be responsible for the clearance of apoptotic cells in the brain; however, they also removed the nonapoptotic cells, which suggested that phagocytes have dual roles in the brain after peripheral trauma. More importantly, a category of conserved proteins between zebrafish and humans or rodents that has been featured in systemic inflammation and neurological disorders was determined in the zebrafish brain after peripheral trauma, which supported that zebrafish is a translational model of posttraumatic neurological disorders. These findings depicted leukocyte invasion of the brain during systemic inflammation after peripheral trauma and its influences on the brain through il1b-dependent mechanisms.

      • Development of an electric oil pump control algorithm for an automatic-transmission-based hybrid electric vehicle considering the gear shift characteristics

        Song, Minseok,Oh, Joseph,Kim, Jonghyun,Kim, Youngchul,Yi, Jaeshin,Kim, Yeonho,Kim, Hyunsoo SAGE Publications 2014 Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engin Vol.228 No.1

In this paper, an electric oil pump control algorithm for an automatic-transmission-based hybrid electric vehicle was proposed. Dynamic models of the hybrid electric vehicle powertrain and hydraulic control system, including a mechanical oil pump and an electric oil pump, were obtained, and a hybrid electric vehicle performance simulator was developed. Also, a flow consumption model of the hydraulic control system was constructed. To represent the characteristics of the hydraulic control system according to the change in the temperature of the automatic transmission fluid, a viscosity index concept was introduced. Based on the simulation and test results, a viscosity index–line pressure–electric oil pump power map was proposed to describe the power supply requirement according to the viscosity index and the required line pressure. Using the viscosity index–line pressure–electric oil pump power map, an electric oil pump control algorithm was suggested to control the electric oil pump by using multi-stage power for a given viscosity index. The mechanical oil pump speed at which the electric oil pump is turned off was obtained on the basis of the flow consumption model. The electric oil pump control algorithm was evaluated by experiments and simulations. The proposed electric oil pump control algorithm satisfied the target line pressure requirement according to the viscosity index. In addition, an electric oil pump control strategy during an automatic transmission gear shift was suggested for the situation in which the maximum line pressure required for the gear shift cannot be achieved by only the mechanical oil pump. The electric-oil-pump-assisted power was determined from the flow consumption model and the mechanical oil pump speed considering the gear shift. The simulation results confirmed that the electric oil pump control strategy satisfied the maximum line pressure during a gear shift.
