      • Cell Death and Intracellular Distribution of Hematoporphyrin in a KB Cell Line

        <P>OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of intracellular photosensitizer distribution on tumor cell death after photodynamic therapy (PDT). BACKGROUND DATA: The photosensitizer accumulates in tumor tissue during PDT, and generates intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in tumor cell death. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was carried out to elucidate the effects of PDT in a KB oral cancer cell line using hematoporphyrin with irradiation at 635 nm and 5 mW/cm(2). After irradiation, the MTT reduction method, agarose gel electrophoresis, flow cytometry, and Diff-Quick staining were performed. The intracellular ROS level was measured by DCF-DA. Intracellular hematoporphyrin was monitored with a confocal microscope, and Western blot and caspase activity assays were performed. RESULTS: In our study, cell survival was reduced by about 50% after 3 h of hematoporphyrin incubation time. In DNA fragmentation, flow cytometry, and Diff-Quick assay, necrosis was identified within 12 h and apoptosis soon thereafter. Confocal microscopy revealed that hematoporphyrin was localized in the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus as time passed. The quantities of intracellular ROS correlated with the time of hematoporphyrin accumulation. Additionally, Western blot analysis of Bcl-2/Bax, the release of cytochrome C, and activity of caspase-3 and caspase-9 showed that apoptosis followed the mitochondria-dependent pathway. CONCLUSION: PDT with hematoporphyrin in the KB cell line showed morphological changes of cell necrosis and apoptosis, which were associated with the time of distribution and localization of hematoporphyrin. Also, the apoptosis evoked followed the mitochondria-dependent pathway.</P>

      • Calcium Intake is Negatively Associated with Bone Loss During Lactation: A Pilot Study

        Calcium (Ca) requirements during lactation are unknown. We investigated the association between Ca intake and bone mineral density (BMD) during lactation. Twenty-one pregnant women with singletons (non-breastfeeding [NBF] n=7; breastfeeding [BF] n=14) were enrolled before delivery. Ca intake during the 3rd trimester and 6 months postpartum was assessed by food frequency questionnaire and interview. Maternal BMD was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, trochanter, intertrochanter (IT), and total hip at delivery and weaning (or 6 months postpartum). The association of Ca intake with % change of BMD (%ㅿBMD) and change of Z-score (ㅿZ) were assessed by linear regression and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. No association was observed in NBF women. Similarly, %ㅿBMD and 3rd trimester Ca intake were not associated in BF women. However, Ca intake during lactation was positively associated with IT ㅿZ (β: 0.613, p=0.02). Ca:P ratio during lactation was also positively correlated with IT ㅿ%BMD (β: 0.587, p=0.03). Higher intake of Ca during lactation may prevent lactation-related bone loss at the IT.

        대학 창업 성과에 미치는 영향 요인

        본 연구는 우리나라 대학의 교수 및 학생들의 창업 및 그 창업기업들의 성과에 영향을 미치는 요인을, 대학의 산학협력조직 및 제도, 대학의 연구 및 사업화 자원, 대학의 지식재산 규모 등 대학 특성과 함께 지역의 연구 및 지식자산과 지역의 사회경제적 특성을 중심으로 분석하였다. 본 연구에서는 대학알리미 정보와 국가통계포털 등의 자료를 활용하여, 대학알리미에 창업 관련 주요실적을 입력한 157개의 4년제 대학에 대하여 분석하였다. 본 논문의 분석 결과는 창업휴직 허용기간 등 대학의 제도나 인프라, 그리고 대학이나 지역이 보유하는 지식자산의 규모가 교수 창업에 유의하게 긍정적인 영향을 미치지만, 교수 창업기업의 성장에는 대학 보유 특허권 규모 외에는 유의하게 영향을 미치는 요인을 찾기 어려워서, 교수가 창업하는 것에 미치는 영향요인과 그 기업들이 성장하는 데 미치는 영향은 다르다는 것을 보여준다. 또한, 학생 창업의 경우에는 대학의 재학생 창업에 영향을 유의하게 미치는 요인은 창업동아리 및 실습창업강좌였고, 교수 창업 실적도 또한 학생 창업 수에 매우 강하게 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤지만, 대학의 창업지원조직 규모나 대학이 보유하는 지식재산 규모, 그리고 지역의 자원이나 사회경제 특성 등은 재학생들의 창업에 유의한 영향을 미치지 못하였다는 것을 보여준다. 본 논문의 분석 결과는 대학 구성원인 교수와 학생들의 창업 활동에 영향을 미치는 요인은 다를 수 있으며, 대학 창업 창업의 활성화를 위하여는 맞춤형 접근이 필요하다는 것을 시사한다. 한편, 본 논문은 분석대상 대학의 특정한 해의 창업기업만을 대상으로 대학 및 지역의 특성이 미치는 영향을 분석하였으므로, 좀 더 체계적인 분석을 위하여는 대학 창업에 대한 패널데이터 구축 등을 통하여 대학 및 지역의 특성이 창업과 성장에 미치는 영향을 상세히 분석할 필요가 있다. This paper analyzes the factors which affect University professors and students on their startup activities, such as (a) University factors: their industrial cooperation organization and systems, their resources for startup support, their knowledge assets, and (b) socioeconomic characteristics in which Universities are located. We used the data and information from the University Information System and the National Statistical Office Publication to analyze 157 4-year Universities in Korea who uploaded their startup-related information on the system. Our analysis shows that Universities' systems, such as the term for Professors' leave of absence for startup activities, and their amount of knowledge assets affect the number of Professor startups significantly positively, while there is no significant effect on their performance, in terms of sales, from those factors, except for the amount of patents that the University has. In the meantime, the number of practical startup courses, the number of startup clubs, and the number of professor startups in the University affect the number of student startups, while the size of industrial cooperation body, the amount of knowledge asset, the area's socioeconomic characteristics didn't affect their performance. The result implies that we need to take different approaches to boost University professor startups and their student startups: better system and more knowledge for the former, more practical courses and programs for the latter. Further study is needed to get a more robust result because this analysis used only one year data, and personal trait data was not included in the analysis. A panel data analysis for several years is recommended for further research.

        Conceptual design of test equipment to evaluate grasp strength of gripper for robotic manipulator is specified. As usage and installation rate of robotic manipulator has been increased, importance of performance evaluation of end-effector, specifically gripper has become one of the most important factors for safe usage of robotic arm in the field of industry. In order to secure safety workplace, especially where robotic manipulators handle heavy objects, apply rightful gripper by using exact capability. Under this circumstance, grasp strength of gripper has been key factor to evaluate performance of gripper and robotic manipulation. Thus, we have developed mechanical factors in regards of test equipment in order to achieve higher level of test result by considering two points. One of them is modularity of test equipment and the other one is to make the equipment adjustable on sensor location.

        예방정비 후 신뢰성 변동 모니터링 기법에 관한 연구

        철도시스템과 같이 수명주기가 길고 지속적인 유지보수가 필요한 시스템은 운영 및 유지보수(O&M: Operation & Maintenance) 단계에서 효과적인 신뢰성 관리가 매우 중요하다. 따라서 유지보수의 품질 확보 및 효과적인 유지보수 정책 수립을 위해 예방정비 후 신뢰성 변동을 모니터링하는 것이 필요하다. 예방정비 후 경과시간을 기준으로 구간고장률이 증가하면, 예방정비의 효과가 크고 그 주기를 줄임으로써 신뢰성을 향상할 수 있음을 의미한다. 그 반대의 경우는 예방정비 품질에 문제가 있어 예방정비가 역효과를 내고 있음을 의미한다. 본 연구에서는 예방정비 후 경과시간을 기준으로 구간고장률을 산출하는 방법을 제안한다. 그리고, 수치 예제를 통해 제안한 방법의 적용 절차 및 결과를 설명한다. For systems with long life cycles and requiring continuous maintenance, such as railway systems, an effective reliability management is critical at the Operational and Maintenance (O&M) stage. Thus, it is necessary to monitor reliability changes after preventive maintenance (PM) performance to ensure the quality of maintenance and to establish effective maintenance policies. An increase in the interval failure rate based on elapsed time after PM shows that the effectiveness of the PM is significant and the reliability can be improved by reducing its PM interval. In the opposite case, there is a problem with the quality of PM, which means that PM performance is counterproductive. In this study, a method for calculating the interval failure rate based on the elapsed time after every PM is proposed. Furthermore, the application procedures and results of the proposed method are illustrated through numerical examples.

      • 철도안전관리체계 기술기준의 RAMS 요구항목 분석

        「철도안전관리체계 기술기준」및 「철도안전관리체계 승인 및 검사 시행지침」에는 철도 운영 및 유지보수에 대한 다양한 RAMS 요구사항이 있다. 본 연구에서는 이 두 가지 기준 및 지침에서 요구하는 RAMS 항목을 식별하고, 이를 충족하기 위해서 필요한 RAMS활동들을 제시한다. 또한 제시한 활동들의 효과적이고 효율적인 수행을 지원하는 RAMS 통합시스템(S/W)의 기능 요구사항을 제시한다. There are various RAMS(Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety) requirements for railway operation and maintenance in「Technical Regulation for Railway Safety Management System」and「Guidance on Accreditation and Inspection of Railway Safety Management System」. RAMS requirements in those two regulation and guidance, are identified and RAMS tasks to fulfill the requirements are suggested in this article. In addition, functional requirements for a total RAMS system (S/W) supporting the RAMS task are proposed.

        In this paper, static and oscillatory loss of stability of carbon nanotube conveying fluid and modelled as a thin-walled beam is investigated. Analytically nonlocal effect, transverse shear and rotary inertia are incorporated in this study. The governing equations and the boundary conditions are derived through Hamiltons principle. Numerical analysis is performed by using extend Galerkin method which enables us to obtain more exact solutions compared with conventional Galerkin method. Variations of critical flow velocity for analytically nonlocal effect, partially nonlocal effect and local effect of carbon nanopipes are investigated and pertinent conclusion is outlined.
