This study was investigated on antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of PSW(pomegranate seed water extract), PSE(pomegranale seed ethanol extract) and PSO(pomegranate seed oil). 'rile extraction yields of PSW, PSE and PSO were 28,9, 13.0 and 4.9%, respectively. Total phenol contents of PSW, PSE and PSO were 47, 78 mg/g(dry basis) and 40 mg/g, respectively. Electron donating abilities of PSW, PSE and PSO at 1,000 ppm were 18.8, 28.5 and 9.7%, respectively. Antioxidative activities in linoleic acid substrates at 500 ppm were in order of 1'SE > a-tocophcrol > PSW > PSO. Antioxidative activities in linoleic acid emulsion substrates at 200 ppm were in order of α-tocopberol > PSE > PSW > PSO, In antimicrobial activity, PSO showed growth inhibition effect against Micrococcus luteus, Salmonella enteritidis and PSW showed growth inhibition effect against Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coll. Whereas antimicrobial activity' of PSE was not observed. The nitrite-scavenging abilities of PSW, PSE and PSO at 2,000 ppm were 27.5, 23.7 and 39.6%, respectively. And the SOD-like activities of PSW, PSE and PSO at 1,000 ppm were 15.9, 34.9 and 0.10%, respectively.

본 연구에서는 정전기 촉감 디스플레이가 적용된 태블릿을 이용, 시각 장애인이 스스로 사진을 찍고 고대비 시각화 및 촉각의 다중감각으로 감상할 수 있는 시스템을 구현하였다. 태블릿 상의 어플리케이션으로 구현된 시스템은 촬영 보조와 감상의 두 가지 기능을 제공한다. 촬영 보조 기능은 피사체 (얼굴)을 추적하고, 피사체가 사진 중앙에 오도록 음성 안내를 통하여 유도한다. 감상기능에서는 사용자가 촬영한 사진을 윤곽선 추출 알고리즘을 이용하여 시각적으로는 고대비 변환된 이미지를 제공하며, 태블릿 화면상의 윤곽선 주변을 터치 시 정전기 진동촉감을 제공, 사진을 촉각적으로 만질 수 있도록 함으로써 시각 장애인들이 사진을 감상할 수 있도록 구현하였다.
Effects of Fermented Ssanghwatang on Swimming Capacity in Mice

Swimming enhancing effects of ssanghwatang fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisae in mice were investigated, and then the blood biochemical parameters related to fatigue were measured. Compared to the control group, the swimming time was significantly increased in fermented ssanghwatang (FST) group from day 4 (29.27±4.73 vs. 50.27±9.05 min, p<0.05). The lactate level, an important indicator of fatigue, was drastically lower in FST group than in control group (2.13±0.13 vs. 1.40±0.12 mmole/ℓ, p<0.01). These results suggest that FST possesses stimulatory effects which can enhance exercise performance and reduce fatigue.

(2S,3R)-3-hydroxyhomoserine lactone (HSL)은 생리학적 활성을 가지는 다양한 종류의 화합물을 합성하기 위한 중간체로 활용되어 왔다. 본 논문에서는 OBO ester로 보호된 바이닐글라이신 유도체에 이중알콜화 반응을 수행하여 효율적인 HSL 합성 결과를 보고하고자 한다. 바이닐글라이신의 비고리 conformation은 크기가 큰 OBO ester에 의해 조절되었으며 N-inside conformation을 통해 이중알콜화 반응이 진행됨으로써 높은 anti 선택성(> 10 : 1)을 얻을 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 N-Cbz-L-serine을 출발물질로 사용하여 총 7단계 34%의 수율로 HSL을 합성할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 amino diol 구조를 가지는 다양한 생리활성 천연물들의 입체선택적인 합성에 유용하게 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. (2S,3R)-3-hydroxyhomoserine lactone (HSL) has been used as a key intermediate for the synthesis of various biologically active compounds. In this study, we demonstrated an efficient synthesis of HSL via anti selective dihydroxylation of a protected vinyl glycine analog with an oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octyl orthoester (OBO) ester group. Because the acyclic conformation of the substrate was efficiently controlled by the bulky OBO ester group, a diastereoselectivity of > 10 : 1 was obtained in the dihydroxylation reaction without the use of a chiral reagent. By using this result, the target compound 1 can be obtained from commercially available N-Cbz-L-serine 2 in seven steps with an overall yeid of 34%. This result could be applied to the stereoselective synthesis of biologically active molecules containing a vicinal amino diol moiety.
A Prospective Study on Changes in Health Status Following Flood Disaster

Objective-We examined changes in general health status, the prevalence of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and the existence of pre-trauma contributing factors in an agricultural population following a massive flood. Methods-Eighty-three of 160 residents of Garisan-ni, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do, were assessed using the Korean version of the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36-K) between April and June 2006, just prior to a massive flood. Among those initially assessed, 58 residents were available for follow-up 18 months after the flood. Participants completed the SF- 36-K, Beck Depression Index (BDI), Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)-PTSD, and the Korean version of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) to detect depression and PTSD. Trauma experiences were also assessed. Factors related to changes in health status were then analyzed. Results-SF-36-K total scale scores decreased significantly, suggesting a significant reduction in health-related quality of life. The largest reductions were noted in physical and social functioning. Fifty-three percent of the subjects were at least mildly depressed, and 17% had severe depression. In addition, 22% had PTSD on both the IES-R and MMPI-PTSD. Factors that contributed to the deterioration of health status following the flood were the number of disaster events and existence of depression (as assessed by the BDI). Conclusion-The flood was found to lead to deterioration of health status and to provoke depression and PTSD among the agricultural population in the mountainous region. We suggest that the number of disaster event experiences and existence of depression contriuted to changes in health status after the flood.
Long-Term and Sustained COMP-Ang1 Induces Long-Lasting Vascular Enlargement and Enhanced Blood Flow

<P>Vascular enlargement is a characteristic feature of angiopoietin-1 (Ang1)-induced changes in adult blood vessels. However, it is unknown whether tissues having Ang1-mediated vascular enlargement have more blood flow or whether the enlargement is reversible. We have recently created a soluble, stable and potent Ang1 variant, COMP-Ang1. In the present study, we investigated the effects of varied dose and duration of COMP-Ang1 on vascular enlargement and blood flow in the tracheal microvasculature of adult mice and explored a possible mechanism of long-lasting vascular enlargement. We found that COMP-Ang1 administered by adenoviral vector induced long-lasting vascular enlargement and increased tracheal blood flow. In contrast, short-term administration of COMP-Ang1 recombinant protein induced transient vascular enlargement that spontaneously reversed within a month. In both cases, the vascular enlargement resulted from endothelial proliferation. The COMP-Ang1-induced vascular remodeling is mediated mainly through Tie2 activation. Sustained overexpression of Tie2 could participate in the maintenance of vascular changes. Together, our findings indicate that sustained treatment with COMP-Ang1 can produce long-lasting vascular enlargement and increased blood flow.</P>

Interleukin (IL)-8 (CXCL8) expression has been found to be increased in mast cells in atopic dermatitis. It is the most important chemoattractant for immune cells. Pyeongwee-San is a traditional Korean medicine which has been using as a useful prescription for treatment of atopic dermatitis. The objective of this study was to determine precisely the effect of Pyeongwee-San extract (KMP6) on IL-8 expression using human mast cell line,HMC-1 cells. KMP6, HS-Pyeongwee-San (HS-PS, an overthe-counter drug of the Han Kook Shin Yak Pharmaceutical Co., LTD.), and the important component of KMP6,hesperidin inhibited the phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and calcium ionophore A23187-induced IL-8 secretion and mRNA expression in HMC-1 cells. These effects were better than those of dexamethasone, the reference drug tested in our experimental model. Our results revealed the effect of KMP6, which may act as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of atopic dermatitis.

Polycrystalline NixFe3-xO₄ thin films prepared by using a sol-gel process exhibited phase-pure spinel (Fd3m) structure for the Ni composition up to x = 1.0. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy investigations revealed that Ni ions mostly have valence of +2 and occupy the octahedral sites of the cationic sublattice. The NixFe3-xO₄ films exhibited higher electrical resistivity than that of Fe₃O₄ below 300 K. The increase in the resistivity is primarily ascribed to decrease in Fe<SUP>2+</SUP>-Fe<SUP>3+</SUP> polaronic hopping rate in the octahedral sites due to the increase in the octahedral Ni<SUP>2+</SUP> population.
