Transdermal Nicotine Patch Effects on EEG Power Spectra and Heart Rate Variability During Sleep of Healthy Male Adults

        JongBae Choi,YuJin G. Lee,DoUn Jeong 대한신경정신의학회 2017 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.14 No.4

Objective-The effect of transdermal nicotine patch on sleep physiology is not well established. The current study aimed to examine the influence of nicotine patch on homeostatic sleep propensity and autonomic nervous system. Methods-We studied 16 non-smoking young healthy volunteers with nocturnal polysomnography in a double blind crossover design between sleep with and without nicotine patch. We compared the sleep variables, sleep EEG power spectra, and heart rate variability. Results-The night with nicotine patch showed significant increase in sleep latency, wake after sleep onset, and stage 1 sleep; and decrease in total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and percentage of REM sleep. Also, spectral analysis of the sleep EEG in the night with nicotine patch revealed decreased slow wave activity in stage 2 and REM sleep and increased alpha activity in the first NREM-REM sleep cycle. Heart rate variability showed no differences between the 2 nights, but the low to high ratio (a parameter indicative of sympathetic nervous system activity) positively correlated with wake after sleep onset in night with nicotine patch. Conclusion-Transdermal nicotine patch significantly disrupts sleep continuity, sleep architecture, and homeostatic sleep propensity. The overactivation of the sympathetic nervous system may be responsible for these changes.

Effect of Motor Imagery Training on Somatosensory Evoked Potentials and Upper Limb Function in Stroke Patients

Jongbae Choi,Jongeun Yang 국제물리치료연구학회 2020 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.11 No.1

Background: Motor imagery is the mental representation of an action without overt movement or muscle activation. However, few previous studies have demonstrated motor imagery training effects as an objective assessment tool in patients with early stroke. Objective: To investigate the effect of motor imagery training on Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP) and upper limb function of stroke patients. Design: A quasi-experimental study. Methods: Twenty-four patients with stroke were enrolled in this study. All subjects were assigned to the experimental or control group. All participants received traditional occupational therapy for 30 minutes, 5 times a week. The experimental group performed an additional task of motor imagery training (MIT) 20 minutes per day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks. Both groups were assessed using the SSEP amplitude, Fugl-Meyer assessment of upper extremity (FMA UE) and Wolf motor function test. Results: After the intervention, the experimental group showed significant improvement in SSEP amplitude and FMA UE than did the control group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the MIT effectively improve the SSEP and upper limb function of stroke patients.

Dysphagia Rehabilitation Using Kinesiology Taping: A Systematic Review and Design Considerations for Future Studies

Jongbae Choi,Dooho Lee,Jisu Park,Nakyoung Hwang 국제물리치료연구학회 2021 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.12 No.3

Background: Kinesiology taping (KT)’s therapeutic effect on dysphagia is insufficient, and method of KT application is not yet clear. Objectives: To review the considerations for the clinical application of KT for dysphagia rehabilitation. Design: A systematic review. Methods: The present study involved a systematic search of electronic databases (Medline, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science) to identify relevant studies published on the use of KT for dysphagia rehabilitation between 2010 and 2020. Results: Four articles (on child dysphagia, adult dysphagia, and healthy adult) were selected. It was found that when KT was applied with 15% tension to the orbicularis oris, mylohyoid, sternohyoid, and masseter muscles in children with dysphagia, lip closure and sucking function were improved. In addition, when KT with 80% tension was applied below the hyolaryngeal complex in healthy adults, significant activation of the suprahyoid muscle was reported. Application of KT with 50% tension to the digastric posterior bellies and the mylohyoid, geniohyoid, sternocleidomastoid, and upper trapezius muscles in adults with dysphagia showed an immediate improvement in vertical excursion and epiglottis rotation of the hyoid bone. Finally, application of KT with 70% tension to the hyolaryngeal complex in adults with dysphagia showed increased thickness of the suprahyoid and the tongue muscles. Conclusion: The present review indicates that KT has significant potential as a therapeutic exercise method for patients with dysphagia in the future. However, the application of KT in such patients should take into account the shape, design, and degree of tension of the tape and the patient's capability and swallowing function.

      • An IoT-Based Home Energy Management System over Dynamic Home Area Networks

Kim, Jongbae,Byun, Jinsung,Jeong, Daebeom,Choi, Myeong-in,Kang, Byeongkwan,Park, Sehyun SAGE Publications 2015 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF DISTRIBUTED SENSOR NETWOR Vol.2015 No.-

<P>A smart grid (SG) has attracted great attention due to recent environmental problems. SG technologies enable users, such as energy system operators and consumers, to reduce energy consumption and the emission of greenhouse gases, by changing energy infrastructure more efficiently. As a part of the SG, home energy management system (HEMS) has become increasingly important, because energy consumption of a residential sector accounts for a significant amount of total energy consumption. However, a conventional HEMS has some architectural limitations on scalability, reusability, and interoperability. Furthermore, the cost of implementation of a HEMS is very expensive, which leads to the disturbance of the spread of a HEMS. Therefore, this paper proposes an Internet of Things- (IoT-) based HEMS with lightweight photovoltaic (PV) system over dynamic home area networks (DHANs), which enables the construction of a HEMS to be more scalable, reusable, and interoperable. We suggest the techniques for reducing the cost of the HEMS with various perspectives on system, network, and middleware architecture. We designed and implemented the proposed HEMS and conducted a experiment to verify the performance of the proposed system.</P>

Vol.34 No.6

In this paper, we propose a MAC protocol for visible light wireless LAN using LED light. The proposed MAC protocol has a function of automatic direction optimization for LED transceiver. There is periodical time slot for broadcasting and registration in the proposed MAC protocol. We used polling method for data transfer in the protocol since visible light is hard to detect carrier and collision by other mobile stations; thus we cannot use CSMA/CD method in visible light LAN. We also amended the MAC frame of IEEE 802.11 to propose a revised version for visible light wireless LAN using LED light. We investigate the performance of the proposed MAC protocol. When the bit rate of physical layer is 100 Mb/s, the net data throughput using the proposed MAC protocol is estimated to 94.386 Mb/s.

Objective: This study systematically analyzed and reviewed literature on self-driving for the disabled published in Korea over the past 10 years. Methods: We searched literature published between January 2014 and December 2023 in the Library of Congress, RISS, KISS, DBpia, and Google Scholar. The search terms “disabled” and “self-driving” were used, and a total of 469 documents were searched. Of these, 28 articles that met the selection criteria were analyzed. Results: Research published domestically on self-driving for the disabled was gradually decreasing. The most common type of published literature was academic journals. The first author who conducted literature research most often belonged to the Department of Occupational Therapy and the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Engineering, and the most common research area was the establishment of systems to promote and support self-driving for the disabled. The majority of research designs were experimental studies, but the overall level of research was confirmed to be low. Conclusion: Analyzing literature on self-driving for the disabled published domestically, we were able to understand the current status of research in our country. This study is significant as basic data that can be used as a reference when an advanced system that can support and guarantee self-driving for the disabled is introduced in Korea in the future.
