      • Arylsilylation of aryl halides using the magnetically recyclable bimetallic Pd-Pt-Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub> catalyst

        <P>Transition metal-catalyzed silylations have typically involved the use of homogeneous non-recyclable catalytic systems. In this work, the first example of a recyclable catalytic system for the synthesis of arylsilanes has been reported, which utilizes the bimetallic complex, Pd-Pt-Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Various arylsilanes were prepared by the reaction of aryl iodides (or bromides) with hydrosilanes. This methodology showed good functional group tolerance toward ester, ketone, aldehyde, nitro, and cyano groups. The bimetallic Pd-Pt-Fe3O4 catalytic system showed better activity than monometallic Pt-Fe3O4 and Pd-Fe3O4 catalysts. In addition, the bimetallic Pd-Pt-Fe3O4 catalytic system could be easily recovered and reused for over twenty cycles.</P>

        테마파크 공간에 따른 에버랜드 캐스트 의상 분석

        This article is designed to establish fundamental design criterion for theme park cast costumes in accordance with play type and space. There is an understanding that theme parks act as a play space that is designed to meet diverse playing desires. To analyze cast costumes, the theme park - `Everland` in South Korea as an example, area was divided into attraction space and non-attraction space. Attraction space is mainly for full-scale play content areas and the non-attraction space is to enforce the attraction space experience. Roger Caillois`s play theory states that there are 4 play types; Illinx, Mimicry, Agon, and Alea. All 4 play types were shown through attraction and Mimicry at non-attraction. Each cast costume was analyzed in terms of apparel design elements - silhouette, textile, color, detail, and props - related to play type facility and cast role. Criteria for theme park cast costume designs were suggested based on the results. Illinx cast members who fulfill a safety-checking role wear high chroma warm color costumes with the accent on details in bodice cutting lines, collar edges, pockets, buttons and decorative ornaments. A complementary contrast is also used. The guidance cast in Illinx may wear a suit in bright/vivid color. Mimicry guidance cast costumes show meticulous perfection in imitation with the figure in its space. From head to toe, color, textile, and silhouette - every detail and even props should match the character. Agon cast costumes are strictly limited in detail and decorative ornament usage as well as in color, since they are in charge of the management and operation of a competition. Alea cast`s role is a self-demonstrator. Alea cast members should be a real tarot card reader. However, a manual should control their costumes. A total of 10 cast roles at a non-attraction space should be designed to show job patterns clearly in accordance with the whole theme at the park.

        사이버나이프의 품질관리 절차서 개발

        목 적: 국내 실정에 적합한 사이버나이프의 표준화된 품질관리 절차서가 없어 이를 개발하고 유용성을 평가하고자 한다. 대상 및 방법: 사이버나이프의 구조적 특성과 치료 방법 등을 고려하여 품질관리 검사항목을 설정한 후, 적합한 시행 시기에 맞추어 주기적 분류를 하였다. 그리고 설정된 항목들은 각각의 품질관리 목적에 따라 일반적인 품질 관리(basic QC), 치료정확도 품질관리(delivery specific QC), 환자 맞춤형 품질관리(patient specific QC) 등 3개의 분 야로 구분하였다. 국내의 두 개 기관을 대상으로 개발된 품질관리 절차서의 각 항목을 비교하여 허용오차를 분석 하였다. 설정된 항목에 대한 허용 오차는 제작사에서 제공된 품질관리 자료와 현재 국내에 설치되어 있는 두 개 기관의 최근 3년간의 품질관리 수행 데이터 등을 근거하였으며, 각 항목에 대한 측정 결과를 토대로 품질관리 실 태를 분석하고 개발된 품질관리 절차서의 타당성을 검증하였다. 결 과: 개발된 사이버나이프 품질관리 절차서의 항목에 대하여 두 개 기관을 대상으로 정확성을 상호 비교 분석하였다. 모든 측정 결과는 사이버나이프의 품질관리 절차서에서 제시한 허용오차 범위 내에서 일치하고 있음을 확인하였다. 결 론: 본 연구에서 개발된 품질관리 절차서를 통해 사이버나이프에 대한 성능평가 기준을 확립할 수 있으며, 영상유도 정위방사선치료에 대한 정확성 및 안전성을 확보할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다. Purpose: Standardization quality assurance (QA) program of CyberKnife for suitable circumstances in Korea has not been established. In this research, we investigated the development of QA program for CyberKnife and evaluation of the feasibility under applications. Materials and Methods: Considering the feature of constitution for systems and the therapeutic methodology of CyberKnife, the list of quality control (QC) was established and divided dependent on the each period of operations. And then all these developed QC lists were categorized into three groups such as basic QC, delivery specific QC, and patient specific QC based on the each purpose of QA. In order to verify the validity of the established QA program, this QC lists was applied to two CyberKnife centers. The acceptable tolerance was based on the undertaking inspection list from the CyberKnife manufacturer and the QC results during last three years of two CyberKnife centers in Korea. The acquired measurement results were evaluated for the analysis of the current QA status and the verification of the propriety for the developed QA program. Results: The current QA status of two CyberKnife centers was evaluated from the accuracy of all measurements in relation with application of the established QA program. Each measurement result was verified having a good agreement within the acceptable tolerance limit of the developed QA program. Conclusion: It is considered that the developed QA program in this research could be established the standardization of QC methods for CyberKnife and confirmed the accuracy and stability for the image-guided stereotactic radiotherapy.

      • Highly sensitive hydrogen sensors: Pd-coated Si nanowire arrays for detection of dissolved hydrogen in oil

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We studied the H<SUB>2</SUB> sensing properties of Pd nanoparticles on vertical standing Si nanowire (NW) arrays for the detection of dissolved hydrogen (H<SUB>2</SUB>) gas in transformer oil. The Pd-coated Si NW arrays were fabricated by using the aqueous electroless etching method and sputtering. The Pd-coated Si NW arrays were immersed and measured in transformer oil with various dissolved concentrations of H<SUB>2</SUB>. We found that Pd-coated Si NW arrays showed significantly superior performance with regard to the response (∼1000%), the lowest detection limit (1 ppm), and the response time (600 s). The Pd-coated Si NW arrays showed a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 6.53 × 10<SUP>−3</SUP> °C<SUP>-1</SUP> at various oil temperatures (20–80 °C). Pd-coated Si NW arrays showed good reliability for the detection of H<SUB>2</SUB> in oil at room temperature (20 °C), with nearly the same initial resistance for 30 days.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Pd-coated Si NW arrays were fabricated by using an aqueous electroless etching method and sputtering. </LI> <LI> H<SUB>2</SUB> sensing properties of Pd-coated Si NW arrays were measured with various dissolved concentrations in transformer oil. </LI> <LI> The temperature dependence and long term stability of Pd-coated Si NW arrays were monitored to assess the reliability of the sensor. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Carbon-Based, Ultraelastic, Hierarchically Coated Fiber Strain Sensors with Crack-Controllable Beads

        <P>Fiber-based electronics or textronics are spotlighted as a promising strategy to develop stretchable and wearable devices for conformable machine-human interface and ubiquitous healthcare systems. We have prepared a highly sensitive fiber-type strain sensor (maximum gauge factor (GF) = 863) with a broad range of strain (ε < 400%) by introducing a single active layer onto the fiber. In contrast to other metal-based fiber-type electronics, our hierarchical fiber sensors are based on coating carbon-based nanomaterials with responsive microbeads onto elastic fibers. Utilizing the formation of uniform cracks around the microbeads, the device performance was maximized by adjusting the number of microbeads in the carbon-coating layer. We overcoated the carbon-based coating layer of the elastic fiber with a protective polymeric layer and verified no effects on the GF and the range of strain. Our fiber sensors were repeatedly tested more than 5000 times, exhibiting excellent cyclic responses to on/off switching behaviors. For practical applications, the hierarchical fiber sensors were sewed into electrical fabric bands, which are integrable to a wireless transmitter to monitor waveforms of pulsations, respirations, and various postures of level of bending a spinal cord.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        The standardized Korean Red Ginseng extract and its ingredient ginsenoside Rg3 inhibit manifestation of breast cancer stem cellelike properties through modulation of self-renewal signaling

        Background: The ginsenoside Rg3, one of active components of red ginseng, has chemopreventive and anticancer potential. Cancer stem cells retain self-renewal properties which account for cancer recurrence and resistance to anticancer therapy. In our present study, we investigated whether the standardized Korean Red Ginseng extract (RGE) and Rg3 could modulate the manifestation of breast cancer stem cellelike features through regulation of self-renewal activity. Methods: The effects of RGE and Rg3 on the proportion of CD44<SUP>high</SUP>/CD24<SUP>low</SUP> cells, as representative characteristics of stem-like breast cancer cells, were determined by flow cytometry. The mammosphere formation assay was performed to assess self-renewal capacities of breast cancer cells. Aldehyde dehydrogenase activity of MCF-7 mammospheres was measured by the ALDEFLUOR assay. The expression levels of Sox-2, Bmi-1, and P-Akt and the nuclear localization of hypoxia inducible factor-1α in MCF-7 mammospheres were verified by immunoblot analysis. Results: Both RGE and Rg3 decreased the viability of breast cancer cells and significantly reduced the populations of CD44<SUP>high</SUP>/CD24<SUP>low</SUP> in MDA-MB-231 cells. RGE and Rg3 treatment attenuated the expression of Sox-2 and Bmi-1 by inhibiting the nuclear localization of hypoxia inducible factor-1α in MCF-7 mammospheres. Suppression of the manifestation of breast cancer stem cellelike properties by Rg3 was mediated through the blockade of Akt-mediated self-renewal signaling. Conclusion: This study suggests that Rg3 has a therapeutic potential targeting breast cancer stem cells.

      • Typology of R&D Service Firms and Customized Policy Suggestions in Korea

        This paper originates from the questions concerning why Korea has had difficulties in boosting R&D service industries regardless of government efforts over a decade. We first review the intrinsic nature of the R&D services and set up four criteria such as establishment type, diversification of business models, coverage of client firms, and role of R&D service firms as innovation drivers and IP strategies, that will be used in interviewing and analyzing R&D service firms. Second, we carry out in-depth interviews of eighteen R&D service firms to understand business behaviors and relevant characteristics. Finally, we identify five groups of R&D service firms and conclude that differentiated polices have to be implemented according to the groups for promoting the industry effectively.
