        Angioembolization performed by trauma surgeons for trauma patients: is it feasible in Korea? A retrospective study

        Purpose: Recent advancements in interventional radiology have made angioembolization an invaluable modality in trauma care. Angioembolization is typically performed by interventional radiologists. In this study, we aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of emergency angioembolization performed by trauma surgeons. Methods: We identified trauma patients who underwent emergency angiography due to significant trauma-related hemorrhage between January 2020 and June 2023 at Jeju Regional Trauma Center. Until May 2022, two dedicated interventional radiologists performed emergency angiography at our center. However, since June 2022, a trauma surgeon with a background and experience in vascular surgery has performed emergency angiography for trauma-related bleeding. The indications for trauma surgeon-performed angiography included significant hemorrhage from liver injury, pelvic injury, splenic injury, or kidney injury. We assessed the angiography results according to the operator of the initial angiographic procedure. The term "failure of the first angioembolization" was defined as rebleeding from any cause, encompassing patients who underwent either re-embolization due to rebleeding or surgery due to rebleeding. Results: No significant differences were found between the interventional radiologists and the trauma surgeon in terms of re-embolization due to rebleeding, surgery due to rebleeding, or the overall failure rate of the first angioembolization. Mortality and morbidity rates were also similar between the two groups. In a multivariable logistic regression analysis evaluating failure after the first angioembolization, pelvic embolization emerged as the sole significant risk factor (adjusted odds ratio, 3.29; 95% confidence interval, 1.05-10.33; P=0.041). Trauma surgeon-performed angioembolization was not deemed a significant risk factor in the multivariable logistic regression model. Conclusions: Trauma surgeons, when equipped with the necessary endovascular skills and experience, can safely perform angioembolization. To further improve quality control, an enhanced training curriculum for trauma surgeons is warranted.

        기술창업기업의 성장 허들 및 외부 투자자금의 영향 : 실험실창업기업을 중심으로

        최근 정부에서는 대학•출연(연)이 연구논문 또는 특허형태로 보유하고 있는 신기술을 기반으로 하는 창업을 ‘실험실창업’으로 명명하고 확산을 도모하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내에서 최초로 실험실창업기업에 대한 조사자료를 활용하여 이들 기업의 성과에 영향을 주는 요인들을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 먼저 창업자가 산업체 경력을 보유한 기업의 성과가 상대적으로 양호하였으며, 이는 창업자가 실험실창업기업의 사업모델이 지향하는 산업과 필요한 기술에 대한 이해도가 사전에 준비되어 있어야 한다는 점을 시사한다. 둘째, 과거의 성과는 당해년도 시점의 성과 발생 및 성과의 수준에 공히 유의한 영향을 미치는 반면, 당해년의 연구개발비 및 투자유치규모의 경우에는 성과의 수준에 대해서만 유의하였다. 특히, 투자유치규모는 역 U자의 관계로 영향을 주는 것으로 관측되었다. 즉, 실험실창업기업의 성장을 위해 초기단계에는 일정규모의 자금지원이 필요함을 보여줌과 동시에 일정한 성장단계 이후에는 추가적인 자금지원만으로 지속성장을 담보할 수 없음도 나타내고 있다. 이는 기업의 지속성장을 위해서는 성장단계에 맞추어 단계별로 취약분야에 대한 맞춤형 지원방안이 고려되어야 함을 시사한다. This study explores the critical factors that drive the financial performance of Lab-based start-up companies. First, we found that the founder’s expertise in the industrial field was highly related with the financial performance. It suggests that the deep insight and discerning knowledge as well are the prerequisite for the start-up’s success. Second, while past achievements have a significant impact on the level of performance and performance at the time of the year, only the level of performance in the case of R&D expenditures and the scale of investment attraction in the year was significant. In particular, investment attraction was observed to affect the relationship of reverse U-shape, which implies that a certain amount of funding was necessary in the early stages for the growth of Lab-based start-ups, and that additional funding after a certain stage of growth could not guarantee sustainable growth only. Our findings suggest that the Korean government need to consider the bespoke policy mix such as ‘stage-by-stage’ approach for the achievement of the sustainable growth in the start-up market.

        A New Perspective on the Advanced Microblade Cutting Method for Reliable Adhesion Measurement of Composite Electrodes

        The microblade cutting method, so-called SAICAS, is widely used to quantify the adhesion of battery composite electrodes at different depths. However, as the electrode thickness or loading increases, the reliability of adhesion values measured by the conventional method is being called into question more frequently. Thus, herein, a few underestimated parameters, such as friction, deformation energy, side-area effect, and actual peeing area, are carefully revisited with ultrathick composite electrodes of 135 ㎛ (6 mAh cm<sup>-2</sup>). Among them, the existence of side areas and the change in actual peeling area are found to have a significant influence on measured horizontal forces. Thus, especially for ultrahigh electrodes, we can devise a new SAICAS measurement standard: 1) the side-area should be precut and 2) the same actual peeling area must be secured for obtaining reliable adhesion at different depths. This guideline will practically help design more robust composite electrodes for high-energy-density batteries.

        Immunodysregulatory potentials of polyethylene or polytetrafluorethylene microplastics to mice subacutely exposed via intragastric intubation

        Microplastics (MPs) have been recently recognized as posing a risk to human health. The adverse health effects of MP exposure have been recently reported, especially via the oral exposure route. The present study investigated whether subacute (4 week) exposure to polyethylene (PE) or polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) MPs via gastric intubation caused immunotoxicity. Two different sizes of PE MPs (6.2 or 27.2 μm) and PTFE MPs (6.0 or 30.5 μm) were administered to 6-week-old mice of both sexes at 0 (corn oil vehicle control), 500, 1000, or 2000 mg/kg/day (n = 4/group). No significant differences were observed between groups in the major thymic or splenic immune cell populations, including thymic CD4+, CD8+, CD4+/ CD8+ T lymphocytes, and splenic helper T cells, cytotoxic T cells, and B cells. The ratio of interferon-gamma (IFNγ) to interleukin-4 (IL-4) in culture supernatants from polyclonally activated splenic mononuclear cells ex vivo (48 h) was dosedependently decreased in female mice that received small- and large-size PTFE MPs. The IFNγ/IL-4 ratio was also decreased in the female mice dosed with large-size PE MPs. The serum IgG2a/IgG1 ratio was dose-dependently increased in male and female animals dosed with small-size PE MPs, in female animals dosed with large-size PTFE MPs, and in male animals dosed with small-size PTFE MPs. The present study implies that immune functions could be affected in animals exposed to MPs via gastric intubation. These effects are dependent on MP size, MP dose, MP polymer type, and mouse sex. Further investigations with longer exposure periods could be necessary to more clearly define the immunotoxic effects of MPs.

        Increasing needs about how to evaluate maximum power of traction battery lead R&D of power test procedure for traction battery by supporting of MLTM(Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs). To be adopted KMVSS, This power test procedure would be specific, possibly repeatable and anti-design-regulatable. As a first step for this R&D, other power test procedure for traction battery had been studied even though module level test procedure not a pack level. Traction battery"s dynamic power performance pattern had been also studied. On this paper, the power test procedure Ver. 1.0 developed by this R&D is evaluated by commercialized traction battery.

        협력적 멘토링 과정에서 나타나는 초임중등과학교사의 교수실행 문제점

        이 연구에서는 과학교사의 수업전문성 향상을 위한 협력적 프로그램에 참가한 초임중등과학교사의 교수실행에서의 문제점을 알아보았다. 연구 대상자는 대학교 과학교수학습센터에서 주관한 중등과학교사 수업전문성 향상을 위한 멘토링 연수 프로그램에 참가한 24명의 교사 중 5번의 멘토링 과정을 모두 이행한 6쌍(12명)을 선정하였다. 연구를 위해 멘토 및 멘티 저널, 일대일 멘토링 녹음본 및 전사본, 멘토링 중간과 사후에 실시한 인터뷰 녹화본과 전사본, 멘토링 초기와 후기에 실시한 설문지를 수집하였다. 이러한 자료를 통해서 얻은 주요결과는 다음과 같다. 멘티교사는 수업을 준비할 때 수업목표를 명확하게 정하지 않았으며, 학생들의 성취수준을 고려하지 않고 수업내용을 선정하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 과학적인 개념 이해에서도 어려움을 나타내었다. 대부분의 멘티교사는 한 차시에 너무 많은 내용을 수업하였으며 발문의 형태는 학생들의 사고를 이끌어내는 발산적 발문보다는 수렴적 발문이 대부분 이였다. 또한 학생들의 행동을 잘 통제하지 못하여 실험수업이나 탐구수업 수행 시 힘들어 하였으며 대부분의 수업에 학생의 참여가 없는 교사중심의 강의식 수업이 일어나는 것을 확인하였다. 멘티교사들 중 일부는 자신의 교수실행에 대해 문제라고 인식한 부분에 대한 반성을 하였고 교수실행의 개선으로 이어졌다. 같은 문제점을 가진 멘티교사라도 자신의 문제점에 대해 인식하고 반성을 한멘티교사는 문제점이 해결되는 모습을 보였으나, 반성이 일어나지 않는 경우에는 멘토링이 진행되는 동안 계속해서 동일한 문제점을 나타냈다. 또한 이 연구에서는 초임 과학 교사의 교수 실행에 대한 반성이 중요한 것으로 나타났다. The purpose of this study is to examine the problems in the teaching practice of beginning science teachers who participated in the collaborative mentoring program to improve their teaching expertise. The participants were six beginning science teachers and six mentors at middle and high school levels. From each beginning science teacher and mentor teacher, journals, one-to-one mentoring records and transcripts, interviews and questionnaires, and transcripts conducted at the beginning, middle and the end of the mentoring program were collected. Seven aspects of the beginning science teachers`` problems in their teaching practice were identified. The result showed that mentee teachers didn``t set up specific learning objectives and they organized and presented lesson contents without considering students`` proficiency level. Also, they found it hard to prepare for the lessons irrelevant to their major field of study and they tended to use convergent questions more than divergent questions. Mentee teachers tend to give teacher-centered rather than student-centered teaching. Beginning teachers`` recognition of their problems in their teaching practice tends to lead changes in their teaching practice. Some of the problems that mentee teachers showed could be overcome if they recognized the problem through the collaborative mentoring program, but if not, it tends to remain throughout mentoring program. This study also highlighted the importance of reflection on beginning science teachers`` practice.
