The function, mechanisms, and clinical applications of metformin: potential drug, unlimited potentials

        Jianhong Liu,Ming Zhang,Dan Deng,Xiao Zhu 대한약학회 2023 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.46 No.5

Metformin has been used clinically for more than 60 years. As time goes by, more and more miraculous effects of metformin beyond the clinic have been discovered and discussed. In addition to the clinically approved hypoglycemic effect, it also has a positive metabolic regulation effect on the human body that cannot be ignored. Such as anti-cancer, anti-aging, brain repair, cardiovascular protection, gastrointestinal regulation, hair growth and inhibition of thyroid nodules, and other nonclinical effects. Metformin affects almost the entire body in the situation taking it over a long period, and the preventive effects of metformin in addition to treating diabetes are also beginning to be recommended in some guidelines. This review is mainly composed of four parts: the development history of metformin, the progress of clinical efficacy, the nonclinical efficacy of metformin, and the consideration and prospect of its application.

      • Restorative Justice and Chinese Traditional Legal Culture in the Context of Contemporary Chinese Criminal Justice Reform

Jianhong Liu,George B. Palermo 아시아경찰학회 2009 Asia Pacific Journal of Police & Criminal Justice Vol.7 No.1

The restorative justice movement of recent decades has largely developed in Western countries (Van Ness 2002). The present study examines the Chinese Confucian traditional philosophy and legal cultural values that are compatible with the philosophy and principles of restorative justice and analyzes the specific principles of the Confucian traditional legal culture that were conducive to restorative justice practices. It explicates several major Chinese contemporary programs and practices which are compatible with modern restorative justice and explains how the Chinese Confucian traditional legal cultural principles continue to influence criminal justice policy within the context of contemporary Chinese criminal justice reforms. The study suggests that unlike the typical Western restorative justice movement, which is a response to the problems of justice system, the main impetus for the development of China's restorative justice is its Confucian traditional legal culture.

Panduratin A Inhibits Cell Proliferation by Inducing G0/G1 Phase Cell Cycle Arrest and Induces Apoptosis in Breast Cancer Cells

        Liu, Qiuming,Cao, Yali,Zhou, Ping,Gui, Shimin,Wu, Xiaobo,Xia, Yong,Tu, Jianhong The Korean Society of Applied Pharmacology 2018 Biomolecules & Therapeutics(구 응용약물학회지) Vol.26 No.3

Because of the unsatisfactory treatment options for breast cancer (BC), there is a need to develop novel therapeutic approaches for this malignancy. One such strategy is chemotherapy using non-toxic dietary substances and botanical products. Studies have shown that Panduratin A (PA) possesses many health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant and anticancer activities. In the present study, we provide evidence that PA treatment of MCF-7 BC cells resulted in a time- and dose-dependent inhibition of cell growth with an $IC_{50}$ of $15{\mu}M$ and no to little effect on normal human MCF-10A breast cells. To define the mechanism of these anti-proliferative effects of PA, we determined its effect critical molecular events known to regulate the cell cycle and apoptotic machinery. Immunofluorescence and flow cytometric analysis of Annexin V-FITC staining provided evidence for the induction of apoptosis. PA treatment of BC cells resulted in increased activity/expression of mitochondrial cytochrome C, caspases 7, 8 and 9 with a significant increase in the Bax:Bcl-2 ratio, suggesting the involvement of a mitochondrial-dependent apoptotic pathway. Furthermore, cell cycle analysis using flow cytometry showed that PA treatment of cells resulted in G0/G1 arrest in a dose-dependent manner. Immunoblot analysis data revealed that, in MCF-7 cell lines, PA treatment resulted in the dose-dependent (i) induction of $p21^{WAF1/Cip1}$ and p27Kip1, (ii) downregulation of Cyclin dependent kinase (CDK) 4 and (iii) decrease in cyclin D1. These findings suggest that PA may be an effective therapeutic agent against BC.

FgIlv3a is crucial in branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis, vegetative differentiation, and virulence in Fusarium graminearum

        Xin Liu,Yichen Jiang,Yinghui Zhang,Mingzheng Yu,Hongjun Jiang,Jianhong Xu,Jianrong Shi 한국미생물학회 2019 The journal of microbiology Vol.57 No.8

Dihydroxyacid dehydratase (DHAD), encoded by ILV3, catalyses the third step in the biosynthetic pathway of branchedchain amino acids (BCAAs), which include isoleucine (Ile), leucine (Leu), and valine (Val). Enzymes involved in BCAA biosynthesis exist in bacteria, plants, and fungi but not in mammals and are therefore attractive targets for antimicrobial or herbicide development. In this study, three paralogous ILV3 genes (FgILV3A, FgILV3B, and FgILV3C) were identified in the genome of Fusarium graminearum, the causal agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB). Deletion of FgILV3A alone or combined with FgILV3B or FgILV3C indicated an important role for FgILV3A in BCAA biosynthesis. FgILV3A deletion mutants lost the ability to grow on medium lacking amino acids. Exogenous supplementation of 1 mM Ile and Val rescued the auxotrophy of ΔFgIlv3A, though 5 mM was required to recover the growth defects in ΔFgIlv3AB and ΔFgIlv3AC strains, indicating that FgIlv3b and FgIlv3c exhibit redundant but accessory roles with FgIlv3a in BCAA biosynthesis. The auxotrophy of ΔFgIlv3A resulted in pleiotropic defects in aerial hyphal growth, in conidial formation and germination, and in aurofusarin accumulation. In addition, the mutants showed reduced virulence and deoxynivalenol production. Overall, our study demonstrates that FgIlv3a is crucial for BCAA biosynthesis in F. graminearum and a candidate fungicide target for FHB management.

One-step synthesis of Ni3N@C hybrid and its catalytic activity for overall water splitting

        Weilin Weng,Jianhong Chen,Qingcui Liu,Feng Yu,Jianning Wu,Zhiyong Liu,Banghua Peng 한국화학공학회 2022 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.39 No.7

Ni3N@C nanocomposite was prepared by a simple one-step low-temperature pyrolysis method with nickelacetate in flowing ammonia. The spherical Ni3N nanoparticles were uniformly coated with a carbon protective layerformed in-situ with a thickness of 10 nm, which shows excellent catalytic activity for overall water splitting in alkalinesolution. The experimental results showed that the initial potential for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was 0.06 V(versus reversible hydrogen electrode, vs RHE), and the overpotential () was 284mV at the current density of 10mAcm2; the initial potential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was 1.53 V vs RHE, and  was 390 mV at the currentdensity of 10 mA cm2. In addition, Ni3N@C had excellent stability for overall water splitting in alkaline solution. Theexcellent activity and high stability of the catalyst are due to the high intrinsic activity of Ni3N as well as the formationof carbon coating layer, which not only improves the conductivity of the material and accelerates the transfer of electronsand protons, but also protects Ni3N from corrosion in alkaline electrolyte. In a word, we provide a simple, economicaland low-temperature sustaining method to prepare Ni3N to be used in water splitting, and the preparationmethod can also be used to prepare other promising bifunctional electrocatalysts for energy conversion field.

Effects of organic and inorganic metal salts on thermogravimetric pyrolysis of biomass components

        Shilin Zhao,Meng Liu,Liang Zhao,Jianhong Lu 한국화학공학회 2017 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.34 No.12

Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) was employed to elucidate the catalytic effects of organic and inorganic metal salts (K2CO3, KAc, Na2CO3 and NaAc) on the pyrolysis of three biomass components (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin). In case of cellulose, TG analysis results showed that all the four metal salts increased the yield of char products and decreased the weight loss rates of cellulose pyrolysis, which followed the order of Na2CO3>K2CO3> NaAc>KAc. In contrast to cellulose, the four organic and inorganic salts employed had no significant effects on the remaining two biomass components:, hemicellulose and lignin. However, the four metal salts led to the devolatilization reaction of hemicellulose to occur at lower temperature region, and the dehydration reaction of lignin was promoted more or less. An increase in the heating rate might augment the maximum degradation rate. Different mixing ratios had little influence on the progress of catalytic pyrolysis. Based on the observations, the potential mechanism of the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass components with metal salts was discussed.

Study on the removal of chromium(III) from leather waste by a two-step method

        Li Wang,Jun Liu,Yang Jin,Ming Chen,JianHong Luo,Xinhua Zhu,Yuqiang Zhang 한국공업화학회 2019 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.79 No.-

The removal of chromium(III) from leather solid waste was carried out by two steps: the leaching stepand the ion exchange step. Orthogonal method was applied to the leaching process with H2SO4 asleaching agent and the leaching rate was nearly 100%. The adsorption and desorption of Cr3+ with 732#cation exchange resins were investigated in the ion exchange process. The effects of the resin types, temperature, rotating speed, liquid-solid ratio, initial Cr3+ concentration and time were investigated andthe optimum conditions were as follows: 732#, 333 K, 120 r/min, 20 ml/g, 280 ppm and 5 h. The removalefficiency of Cr3+ from leather hydrolysate was over 95% under optimized conditions. The desorptionefficiency of Cr3+ from loaded resins was almost 99% by three times cross-flow with Na2SO4 solution. There-adsorption of Cr3+ could achieve 95% by regenerated resins. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics andthermodynamics of Cr3+ onto 732# resins were investigated. The adsorption process appeared to followLangmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. 4H0 = 33,816.03 kJ/mol and4S0 = 141.35 J/(mol K) were calculated. The two-step method was proved to be a sustainable andeconomic method for separating chromium from leather waste.
