<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Two new bisabolane sesquiterpenoids, <B>1</B> and <B>2</B>, along with five known ones, 13‐hydroxyxanthorrhizol (<B>3</B>), 12,13‐epoxyxanthorrhizol (<B>4</B>), xanthorrhizol (<B>5</B>), <I>β</I>‐curcumene (<B>6</B>), and <I>β</I>‐bisabolol (<B>7</B>), were isolated from the rhizomes of <I>Curcuma xanthorrhiza</I> <SMALL>Roxb</SMALL><I>.</I> The chemical structures of the new compounds were determined to be (7<I>R</I>,10<I>R</I>)‐10,11‐dihydro‐10,11‐dihydroxyxanthorrhizol 3‐<I>O</I>‐<I>β</I>‐<SMALL>D</SMALL>‐glucopyranoside (<B>1</B>) and (−)‐curcuhydroquinone 2,5‐di‐<I>O</I>‐<I>β</I>‐<SMALL>D</SMALL>‐glucopyranoside (<B>2</B>) on the basis of 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR spectroscopic analyses and optical‐rotation characteristics. Compounds <B>2</B> and <B>3</B> decreased MMP‐1 expression in UVB‐treated human keratinocytes by <I>ca.</I> 8.9‐ and 7.6‐fold at the mRNA level, and by <I>ca.</I> 9.2‐ and 6.6‐fold at the protein level, respectively. The results indicate that the isolated compounds may have anti‐aging effects through inhibition of MMP‐1 expression in skin cells.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Phytochemical investigation of the rhizomes of <I>Gastrodia elata</I> <SMALL>Blume</SMALL> (Orchidaceae) led to the isolation and identification of twelve compounds, including two new phenolic compounds, 4‐hydroxybenzyl vanillyl ether (=4‐{[(4‐hydroxyphenyl)methoxy]methyl}‐2‐methoxyphenol; <B>1</B>) and 4‐{{4‐[4‐(methoxymethyl)phenoxy]benzyl}oxy}benzyl methyl ether (=1‐[4‐(methoxymethyl)phenoxy]‐4‐{[4‐(methoxymethyl)phenoxy]methyl}benzene; <B>2</B>). The structures of <B>1</B> and <B>2</B> were elucidated by spectroscopic data analysis including 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR experiments.</P>

<P>Several zeolites, such as faujasite, mordenite, and ZSM-5, with various aluminum contents have been used to analyze the effect of aluminum or cation concentration (strength of electrostatic field) on hydrogen adsorption at low temperature. Irrespective of the zeolite structure, the adsorption capacity, isosteric heat of adsorption (−ΔH<SUB>ads</SUB>), surface coverage, and micropore occupancy increase with increasing aluminum content of a zeolite. Zeolites with a higher amount of aluminum favorably adsorb hydrogen at relatively low pressures. For zeolites with similar aluminum contents, the adsorption capacity, isosteric heat of adsorption, surface coverage, and micropore occupancy are in the order of mordenite>ZSM-5>faujasite, probably due to differing pore sizes and the presence or absence of pore intersections. Solid-State Reference Electrode Based on Electrodeposited Nanoporous Platinum for Microchip

<P>A new solid-state reference electrode operating in buffered aqueous solution for electrochemical system on microfluidic chip is reported. The anodized nanoporous platinum showed its usefulness as a solid-state reference electrode owing to near-Nernstian behavior, low hysteresis, and quick response. The presence of redox couples such as Fe(CN)<TEX>$\rm{ _6^{3 - /4 - } }$</TEX>, bringing about significant interference, can be successfully suppressed by an electropolymerized poly-1,3-phenylendiamine (poly-m-PD) layer on the nanoporous platinum surface. Since the poly-m-PD coated nanoporous platinum oxide responds exclusively to pH, its potential should be constant and stable in a buffer solution. The nanoporous platinum oxide with poly-m-PD film is easy to produce and is particularly compatible with microfabrication. The experimental results in this study demonstrate that the proposed system successfully works as a solid-state reference electrode that should be integrated on microchips for microanalysis systems.</P>
