Limbal stem cell deficiency causes conjunctivalization characterized by the covering of the corneal surface with conjunctival epithelium. However, the driving force for the encroachment of these conjunctival cells is unclear. Conjunctival stem cells are bipotent stem cells that can proliferate and differentiate into conjunctival epithelial cells and goblet cells to maintain regeneration of the conjunctival epithelium. Here, we show a robust proliferative response of conjunctival stem cells and upregulation of Wnt2b and Wnt3a gene expression in the conjunctivae of mice with induced limbal stem cell deficiency. Topical application of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling activator CHIR resulted in increased proliferation of ΔNp63α-positive stem cells in the basal layers of the bulbar and forniceal conjunctivae and enhanced invasion of conjunctival epithelial and goblet cells into the corneal surface. We also found that in cultures of stem cells isolated from the human conjunctiva, Wnt/β-catenin pathway activation improved the expansion of the ΔNp63α/ABCG2 double-positive cell population by promoting the proliferation and preventing the differentiation of these cells. These expanded stem cells formed a stratified epithelium containing goblet cells under airlift culture conditions. Our data reveal that Wnt/β-catenin signaling contributes to the pathological process of limbal stem cell deficiency by promoting the self-renewal of conjunctival stem cells and suggest that these cells are a driving force in corneal conjunctivalization.
The prevalence of hypertension in Haiti: A retrospective study
Esther O Park,Gunja Jang 한국데이터정보과학회 2015 한국데이터정보과학회지 Vol.26 No.4
The purpose of this study was to explore the prevalence of hypertension in Haiti and to describe regional characteristics, and thus to speculate Haitian specific regional risk factors. This is a descriptive and comparative study. Subjects were 145 male/female Haitians, who aged between 30 and 59 and have lived in rural areas, had their hypertension indicators being screened. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. More than four fifth of the subjects (82.8%) showed pre-hypertensive or moderate to severe hypertensive condition. 65.5% of the total had abnormal pulse pressure (PP≥50) and 13.8% of the sample showed tachycardia (Heart Rate≥100). Female Haitian tended to have higher diastolic blood pressure and faster heart rate than male Haitian. The residents who lived in Part 5-1 area with less accessibility to drinking water tended to have higher systolic and diastolic pressure. Hydration status of Haitians was highly considered as an affecting factor on the distribution of hypertension as evidenced by different level of accessibility to drinking water.

High performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites(HPFRCCs) shows ductile behavior because of the fiber bridging characteristics. In this paper, it was discussed the result of the direct tensile response of HPFRCC with the same volume fraction of fibers. The main variables considered in elude the type of fibers(PET2.0, PET 1.5 + PE0.5, PET1.5 + PVA0.5). As a result, PET 1.5 + PE0.5(pseudo strain-hardening, multiple cracking) are found to be more effective than PET2.0 and PET 1.5 + PVA0.5.

HPFRCC(High performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composite) shows the inhibit of cracks within the cement matrix, and formed a lot of multiple cracks. For the effective design and evaluation of HPFRCC, according to the different material characteristics that makes a study of the fiber and cement matrix interaction between the behaviors and characteristics of the destruction is needed. Characterization of AE (Acoustic Emission) can be demonstrated the micro damage which it is not discovered from visual observation, and it become known to an advantage that was clearly discriminated from the existing methods. In this study, the correlations between AE signal and result of the direct tensile response of HPFRCC. For these purpose, three kind of fiber were used: PET2.0%, PET1.5+PE0.5%, PET1.5%+PVA0.5%. The results show the direct tensile response of HPFRCC, PET-PE specimen has multiple cracks and high strength than specimens with PET fibers. According to the results of test, the AE technique is a useful method in damage assessment of HPFRCC under direct tensile loading.

Generally, reinforced concrete structures exposed to the outside temperature are affected by freezing and thawing process during winter and early spring. These freezing and thawing process can lead to the reduction in durability of concrete as cracking or surface spalling. This paper is to study the hysteretic behavior of RC beams exposed to freezing and thawing under cyclic loadings. To compare the difference in hysteretic behavior of RC Beams, limited tests were conducted under different types of damage and freezing and thawing cycles. For this purpose, six specimens were tested. It is thought that experimental results will be used as basic data to evaluate hysteretic behavior of RC beams exposed to freezing and thawing.
