      • New silica–titania based polymeric hybrid materials for the removal of Cu(II) ions from their aqueous solutions

        Jamwal, Hem Suman,Kumari, Sapana,Chauhan, Ghanshyam S.,Ahn, Jou-Hyeon,Subba Reddy, N. Elsevier 2016 Journal of environmental chemical engineering Vol.4 No.2

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Large surface area, high porosity and good mechanical strength are some of the attributes of the polymer–inorganic hybrid materials those make these attractive candidates for use as adsorbents. New silica/titania–based polymer–inorganic hybrid material was synthesized via the sol–gel process. While SiO2 and TiO2 were used as the inorganic components, poly(2–Hydroxypropyl methacrylate) was used as the polymeric component. The material was well characterized by FTIR, SEM, TEM and BET. The synthesized hybrid material was used as adsorbent for the removal of Cu(II) ions from their aqueous solutions. Parametric study of the factors affecting adsorption was carried out to find the optimum adsorption conditions. Different kinetic and isotherm models applied show that the adsorption best follows pseudo–second order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of the HPMA/SiO2/TiO2 hybrid material was found to be 192.23mgg.−1 In order to see the validity of the experimental procedure and results obtained, artificial neuron network model was employed to predict the adsorption capacity values following the experimental adsorption parametric frame. There is a close agreement with the experimental and the predicted values as very high values of R2 of 0.99957 and 0.99961 were obtained for the predicted vs. experimental values with training and testing data set.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> New HPMA/SiO2/TiO2 hybrids were synthesized by sol-gel process. </LI> <LI> Synthesized materials were used as Cu(II) adsorbents following a parametric framework. </LI> <LI> Materials exhibited high maximum adsorption capacity of 192.23mgg −1 under optimum conditions. </LI> <LI> ANN model was employed to validate the experimental adsorption capacity values. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Silica-polymer hybrid materials as methylene blue adsorbents

        Jamwal, Hem Suman,Kumari, Sapana,Chauhan, Ghanshyam S.,Reddy, N.S.,Ahn, Jou-Hyeon Elsevier 2017 Journal of environmental chemical engineering Vol.5 No.1

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Nanohybrid materials have emerged as effective adsorbents for the removal of contaminants from the polluted water bodies. In this study we report two new hybrid materials as adsorbents for methylene blue from its aqueous solutions. Nanohybrid materials were prepared from methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate or 2-hydroxyproypl methacrylate by emulsifier–free emulsion polymerization using 3–aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as silane coupling agent, and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as silica component precursor and polymeric colloid stabilizer, respectively. Adsorption was studied as a function of various factors, including contact time using two cationic dyes methylene blue (MB) and malachite green and one anionic dye Congo red. Since the results obtained suggest more affinity of the adsorbents for MB than other two dyes, hence the former was selected to assess the effect of variation of temperature, pH and concentration, which control the dye adsorption process. The hybrid materials exhibited high adsorption capacity both in the cumulative as well as in the reusability studies. Experimental data was subjected to different kinetic models and adsorption isotherms to understand the adsorption mechanism.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> New poly(methacrylate)/silica nanohybrid were synthesized by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. </LI> <LI> Synthesized materials were used as methylene blue (MB) adsorbents following a parametric framework. </LI> <LI> Materials exhibited high maximum adsorption capacity between 56.625 and 91.324mgg −1 under optimum conditions. </LI> <LI> Materials are reusable. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Evaluation of commercial probiotic lactic cultures against biofilm formation by Cronobacter sakazakii

        ( Anubhav Jamwal ),( Kavita Sharma ),( Rajni Chauhan ),( Saurabh Bansal ),( Gunjan Goel ) 대한장연구학회 2019 Intestinal Research Vol.17 No.2

Background/Aims: Cronobacter sakazakii, an emergent pathogen is considered as a major concern to infants and neonates fed on reconstituted powdered infant milk formula. In conjunction with many other factors, biofilm forming capacity adds to its pathogenic potential. In view of the facts that infants are at highest risk to C. sakazakii infections, and emerging antibiotic re-sistance among pathogens, it is imperative to evaluate probiotic cultures for their efficacy against C. sakazakii. Therefore, pure probiotic strains were isolated from commercial probiotic products and tested for their antimicro-bial and anti-biofilm activities against C. sakazakii. Methods: A total of 6 probiotic strains were tested for their antibiotic susceptibility followed by antimicrobial activity using cell-free supernatant (CFS) against C. sakazakii. The inhibitory activity of CFS against biofilm formation by C. sakazakii was determined using standard crystal violet assay and microscopic observations. Results: All the probiotic strains were sensitive to ampicillin, tetracycline, vancomycin and carbenicillin whereas most of the strains were resistant to erythro-mycin and novobiocin. Four of the 6 probiotic derived CFS possessed antimicrobial activity against C. sakazakii at a level of 40 μL. A higher biofilm inhibitory activity (>80%) was observed at initial stages of biofilm formation with weaker activity during longer incubation upto 48 hours (50%.60%). Conclusions: The study indicated the efficacy of isolated commercial probiotics strains as potential inhibitor of biofilm formation by C. sakazakii and could be further explored for novel bioactive molecules to limit the emerging infections of C. sakazakii. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided coiling and glue is safe and superior to endoscopic glue injection in gastric varices 65 with severe liver disease: a retrospective case control study

        Kapil D. Jamwal,Rajesh K. Padhan,Atul Sharma,Manoj K. Sharma 대한소화기내시경학회 2023 Clinical Endoscopy Vol.56 No.1

Background/Aims: Gastric varices (GV) are present in 25% of cirrhotic patients with high rates of rebleeding and mortality. Data onendoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided treatment in severe liver disease (model for end stage liver disease sodium [MELD-Na] >18 andChild-Turcotte-Pugh [CTP] C with GV) are scarce. Thus, we performed a retrospective comparison of endoscopic glue injection withEUS-guided therapy in cirrhotic patients with large GV. Methods: A retrospective study was performed in the tertiary hospitals of India. A total of 80 patients were recruited. The inclusioncriteria were gastroesophageal varices type 2, isolated gastric varices type 1, bleeding within 6 weeks, size of GV >10 mm, and a MELDNa>18. Treatment outcomes and complications of endoscopic glue injection and EUS-guided GV therapy were compared. Results: In this study, the patients’ age, sex, liver disease severity (CTP, MELD-Na) and clinical parameters were comparable. The mediannumber of procedures, injected glue volume, complications, and GV obturation were better in the EUS group, respectively. Onsubgroup analysis of the EUS method (e.g., direct gastric fundus vs. paragastric collateral [PGC] coil placement), PGC coil placementshowed decreased coil requirement, less injected glue volume, decreased luminal coil extrusion, and increased successful GV obturation. Conclusions: EUS-guided treatment is more efficient and safer, and requires a smaller number of treatment sessions, as compared toendoscopic treatment in severe liver disease patients with large GV. Furthermore, PGC coil placement increases the complete obliterationof GV.

Design synthesis and optimization of a 4-SPS intrinsically compliant parallel wrist rehabilitation robotic orthosis

Hussain Shahid,Jamwal Prashant K,Van Vliet Paulette 한국CDE학회 2021 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.8 No.6

Neuroplasticity allows the human nervous system to adapt and relearn motor control following stroke. Rehabilitation therapy, which enhances neuroplasticity, can be made more effective if assisted by robotic tools. In this paper, a novel 4-SPS parallel robot has been developed to provide recovery of wrist movements post-stroke. The novel mechanism presented here was inspired by the forearm anatomy and can provide the rotational degrees of freedom required for all wrist movements. The robot design has been discussed in detail along with the necessary constructional, kinematic, and static analyses. The spatial workspace of the robot is estimated considering various dimensional and application-specific constraints besides checking for singular configurations. The wrist robot has been further evaluated using important performance indices such as condition number, actuator forces, and stiffness. The pneumatic artificial muscles exhibit varying stiffness, and therefore, workspace points are reached with different overall stiffness of the robot. It is essential to assess robot workspace points that can be reached with positive forces in actuators while maintaining a positive definite overall stiffness matrix. After the above analysis, design optimization has been carried out using an evolutionary algorithm whereby three critical criteria are optimized simultaneously for optimal wrist robot design.

Enhancing the Hexavalent Chromium Bioremediation Potential of Acinetobacter junii VITSUKMW2 Using Statistical Design Experiments

( Pulimi Mrudula ),( Subika Jamwal ),( Jastin Samuel ),( Natarajan Chandrasekaran ),( Amitava Mukherjee ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2012 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.22 No.12

The Cr(VI) removal capability of Acinetobacter junii VITSUKMW2 isolated from the Sukinda chromite mine site was evaluated and enhanced using statistical design techniques. The removal capacity was evaluated at different pH values (5-11) and temperatures (30-40oC) and with various carbon and nitrogen sources. Plackett- Burman design was used to select the operational parameters for bioremediation of Cr(VI). Three parameters (molasses, yeast extract, and Cr(VI) concentration) were chosen for further optimization using central composite design. The optimal combination of parameters was found to be 14.85 g/l molasses, 4.72 g/l yeast extract, and 54 mg/l initial Cr(VI), with 99.95% removal of Cr(VI) in 12 h. A. junii VITSUKMW2 was shown to have significant potential for removal of Cr(VI).

The combined response of elevated CO2 and temperature on Valeriana jatamansi Jones with worm manuring in the western Himalaya: Integrating growth, biomass, and quality

        Swati Walia,Shalika Rathore,Saizal Jamwal,Rakesh Kumar 한국원예학회 2022 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.63 No.2

The impact of elevated CO 2 (eCO 2 ) and elevated temperature (eT) on growth, phenology, yield, and quality has been widely investigated in fi eld crops, but limited work has been done so far on the combined eff ect of eCO 2 and eT on medicinal plants. Hence, a 2-year experiment was conducted at CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur, India, to study plant growth, biomass, and essential oil composition of mushkbala ( Valeriana jatamansi Jones) in response to elevated CO 2 , temperature, and their combination with the regulation of fertilization. The growth and yield of V. jatamansi were significantly aff ected by environmental conditions and fertilization. Root length and root volume were 16.85 and 48.99% higher in the combined eCO 2 and eT conditions compared to the ambient conditions. Combined eCO 2 and eT showed more positive effect on the stem, root and aboveground biomass as compared to leaf, and fl ower biomass, over the years. Fertilization improved the growth and biomass of plants compared to unfertilized pots. FACE + FATI positively aff ected V. jatamansi ’s major essential oil compound patchouli alcohol, while fertilization showed a negative eff ect. Our results highlight the need for long-term studies on medicinal and aromatic plants due to changes in the growth and effi ciency of crop.

        Myoclonus-Ataxia Syndrome Associated with COVID-19

2021 Journal Of Movement Disorders Vol.14 No.2

Neurological manifestations of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have increasingly been reported since the onset of the pandemic. Herein, we report a relatively new presentation. A patient in the convalescence period following a febrile illness with lower respiratorytract infection (fever, myalgia, nonproductive cough) presented with generalized disabling myoclonus, which is phenotypicallysuggestive of brainstem origin, along with additional truncal cerebellar ataxia. His neurology work-ups, such as brainMRI, electroencephalography, serum autoimmune and paraneoplastic antibody testing, were normal. His CT chest scan revealedright lower lung infiltrates, and serological and other laboratory testing did not show evidence of active infection. COVID-19 titers turned out to be strongly positive, suggestive of post-COVID-19 lung sequelae. He responded partially to antimyoclonicdrugs and fully to a course of steroids, suggesting a para- or postinfectious immune-mediated pathophysiology. Myoclonusataxiasyndrome appears to be a neurological manifestation of COVID-19 infection, and knowledge regarding this phenomenonshould be increased among clinicians for better patient care in a pandemic situation.

Effects of zolpidem on sleep parameters in patients with cirrhosis and sleep disturbances: A randomized, placebo-controlled trial

        Manoj Kumar Sharma,Sumeet Kainth,Sachin Kumar,Ankit Bhardwaj,Hemant Kumar Agarwal,Rakhi Maiwall,Kapil Dev Jamwal,Saggere Muralikrishna Shasthry,Ankur Jindal,Ashok Choudhary,Lovkesh Anand,Rajender Mal 대한간학회 2019 Clinical and Molecular Hepatology(대한간학회지) Vol.25 No.2

Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to study the efficacy and safety of zolpidem for sleep disturbances in patients with cirrhosis. Methods: Fifty-two Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) class A or B cirrhotics with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index >5 were randomized to either zolpidem 5 mg daily (n=26) or placebo (n=26) for 4 weeks. Results: The therapy of 4 weeks was completed by 23 patients receiving zolpidem (3 stopped treatment due to excessive daytime drowsiness) and 24 receiving placebo (2 refused to continue the study). In the zolpidem group, after 4 weeks of therapy, there was significant increase in total sleep time (TST) and sleep efficiency compared to baseline and improvement in polysomnographic parameters of sleep initiation and maintenance (i.e., decrease in sleep latency time, decrease in wake time, and decreases in number of arousals and periodic limbs movements per hour of sleep), without any significant change in sleep architecture. Conclusions: Four weeks of 5 mg daily zolpidem in CTP class A or B cirrhosis patients with insomnia led to significant increases in TST and sleep efficiency and improvement in polysomnographic parameters of sleep initiation and maintenance without any significant change in sleep architecture.
