<P>In order to reduce over-conservatism in fitness-for-service assessment procedures, experimental evidence and recent analytical developments recognise the importance of considering the actual shape of non-sharp flaws and/or the real geometric constraint conditions at the crack tip. This paper addresses the effect of blunt defects on the structural integrity assessment of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) and pipeline steels. Parametric studies for compact tension specimens with various notch root radii are performed using finite element analysis. The notch fracture toughness, the resistance to the onset of ductile cracking and the J-integral, quantifying the notch driving force, are evaluated. A stress-modified fracture strain model is used as a virtual testing method. The results are analyzed in the framework of the failure assessment diagram (FAD), showing that the existing shape of the FAD is also suitable for assessments of blunt defects and how the concepts introduced can be used to reduce the conservatism in defect assessment, define margins on failure and indicate when plastic collapse is the dominant failure mechanism. The chemical composition of PM_(2.5) was measured at Gosan. Jeju for two weeks each in November 2001 and spring 2002. In the latter part of the measurement period of November 2001, designated as the polluted period in this work, secondarily formed ion components as well as primarily emitted elemental carbon were high, PM_(2.5) mass concentration was also high in this polluted period compared with the yellow sand period, in which daily average of PM_(10) peaked up to 520㎍/㎥. Increase of major components of anthropogenic origin in the polluted period was not correlated with the variation in sea salt components while increase of crustal components in the yellow sand period was highly correlated with the variation in sea salt components. Trace elements were generally higher in the yellow sand period: however, toxic heavy metals such as zinc, cadmium and lead were the highest in the polluted period.

Autophagy is an important process which maintains cellular homeostasis under stressful conditions such as starvation and pathogenic invasion. Previous observations have indicated that several cytokines are important regulators of the autophagic process. Among the various cytokines, IL-10 has a unique property which functions to suppress overall immunity. However, the functional role of IL-10 during the autophagic process has not been studied. In this study, we examined the effect of IL-10 during starvation induced autophagy of murine macrophages (J774). The results clearly indicated that IL-10 and IL-10 receptor signaling inhibits autophagy induction of murine macrophage. Further experiments revealed that IL-10 activates the class I phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway, which results in the phosphorylation of p70S6K through the activation of Akt and a mammalian target of the rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC 1). These results will advance our understanding of the physiological function of IL-10 during the autophagic process of macrophage.

The electroreflectance (ER) and current-voltage (J-V) of InAs/InGaAs dots in a well (DWELL) solar cell (SC) were measured to examine the optical and electrical properties. To investigate the carrier capturing and escaping effects in the quantum dot (QD) states the above and below optical biases of the GaAs band gap were used. In the reverse bias region of the J-V curve, the tunneling effect in the QD states was observed at low temperature. The ideality factors (n) were calculated from the J-V curves taken from various optical bias intensities (I<SUB>ex</SUB>). The changes in the ideality factor (n) and short circuit current (J<SUB>SC</SUB>) were attributed mainly to carrier capture at low temperature, whereas the carrier escaping effect was dominant at room temperature. ER measurements revealed a decrease in the junction electric field (F<SUB>J</SUB>) due to the photovoltaic effect, which was independent of the optical bias source at the same temperature. At low temperature, the reduction of photovoltaic effect could be explained by the enhancement carrier capturing effect due to the strong carrier confinement in QDs.

Rare-earth (RE) (e.g. Sm, Dy, Ce, etc.) doping has been widely investigated to improve critical current density (J<SUB>c</SUB>) of YBa<SUB>2</SUB>Cu<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7-X</SUB> (YBCO) coated conductors (CC). Oxygen partial pressure is known to be a key parameter in terms of affecting the J<SUB>c</SUB> of YBCO films. In this work, the effect of oxygen partial pressure on the microstructure and J<SUB>c</SUB> of a Ce doped YBCO film was examined. Ce doped YBCO films were deposited on (100) SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> (STO) single crystal substrates at oxygen partial pressures of 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0Torr using a metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) method. Due to the enhanced migration of surface adatoms under reduced oxygen partial pressure, a 1wt% Ce doped YBCO film had a stoichiometric, dense surface. In addition, the zero-field J<SUB>c</SUB> (at 77K) of the 1wt% Ce doped YBCO film deposited at reduced oxygen partial pressure was increased. Irrespective of the amount of Ce, the Ce doped YBCO film showed an increased zero-field J<SUB>c</SUB> (at 77K) under reduced oxygen partial pressure.

All rights reserved</P><P>Background</P><P>The presence of latent tuberculosis (TB) infection (LTBI) should be evaluated before kidney transplantation. Although a new T cell-based assay for diagnosing LTBI gave promising results, this assay has not yet been compared with the tuberculin skin test (TST) for diagnosing LTBI in renal transplant candidates before transplantation.</P><P>Patients and methods</P><P>All adult patients admitted to a single institute for renal transplantation over a 1-year period were prospectively enrolled. A clinically predictive risk of LTBI was defined as: (i) recent close contact with a person with pulmonary TB; (ii) abnormal chest radiography; (iii) a history of untreated or inadequately treated TB; or (iv) a new infection (i.e., a recent conversion of TST).</P><P>Results</P><P>Of 209 renal recipients, 47 (22%) had a positive TST≥5 mm, 21 (10%) had a positive TST≥10 mm, 65 (30%) had a positive T-SPOT.<I>TB</I> test, and 25 (12%) had an indeterminate T-SPOT.<I>TB</I> test. The induration size of TST was significantly associated with a high positivity rate on T-SPOT.<I>TB</I> (<I>P</I><0.001). Agreement between T-SPOT.<I>TB</I> test and TST≥10 mm was fair (<I>k</I>=0.24, 95% confidence interval 0.11–0.36). However, neither univariate nor multivariate analysis showed any association between the clinical risk for LTBI and positivity on T-SPOT.<I>TB</I> or TST.</P><P>Conclusion</P><P>T-SPOT.<I>TB</I> test was more frequently positive than TST in renal transplant candidates. However, further longitudinal studies are awaited to determine whether the ability of T-SPOT.<I>TB</I> assay to detect LTBI in renal transplant recipients can better predict the development of TB than can TST after transplantation.</P>

Acta Neurol Scand: 2011: 123: 325–331. © 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S.</P><P><B>Background – </B> It has not been clarified whether the disparity in ischemic stroke outcome between populations is caused by ethnic and geographic differences or by variations in case mix. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis can overcome some analytical problems but is rarely used in stroke outcome research. This study was to compare the ischemic stroke case‐fatality between two PSM cohorts of Sweden and Korea.</P><P><B>Methods – </B> Prognostic variables related to baseline characteristics and stroke care were included in our PSM model. Then, we selected 7675 Swedish and 1220 Korean patients with ischemic stroke from each stroke registers and performed one‐to‐one matching based on propensity scores of each patient.</P><P><B>Results – </B> After PSM, all measured variables were well balanced in 1163 matched subjects, and the 90‐day case‐fatality was identical 6.2% (HR 0.997, 95%CI 0.905–1.099) in Sweden and Korea.</P><P><B>Conclusions – </B> No difference is found in the 90‐day case‐fatality in propensity score‐matched Swedish and Korean patients with ischemic stroke.</P>
